Rhetorical modes
Rhetorical modes (also known as modes of discourse) describe the variety, conventions, and purposes of the major kinds of language-based communication, particularly writing and speaking. Four of the most common rhetorical modes and their purpose are narration, description, exposition, and argumentation.
Narration
The purpose of narration is to tell a story or narrate an event or series of events. This writing mode frequently uses the tools of descriptive writing. Narration is an especially useful tool for sequencing or putting details and information into some kind of logical order, usually chronological. Working with narration helps us see clear sequences separate from all other mental functions. Examples include:
Description
The purpose of description is to re-create, invent, or visually present a person, place, event, or action so that the reader can picture that which is being described. Descriptive writing can be found in the other rhetorical modes. Examples include:

Presented by Kim Flachmann as part of the Speaking About Pedagogy & Practice in English Featured Speakers Series on March 26, 2015.
This presentation will consider the new WPA standards as they apply to the field of composition, with special emphasis on multimodal approaches to writing. We are facing an entirely new breed of students who have grown up as visual and verbal learners, so we need to help them join the academic conversation from their most accessible point of entry. To this end, we must consider multimodal reading and writing as an integral part of academic literacy.
Kim Flachmann teaches at the California State University, Bakersfield, where she also administers the Composition Program--from basic writing through the Graduate Teaching Assistants. She was chosen Outstanding Professor at CSUB in 1998-99. She also was Rhetorician of the Year for the Young Rhetoricians' Conference in 2007 and was the recipient of the California Association of Teachers of English Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009. She has published numerous articles on rhetoric and American literature and has written seven textbooks--among them a college reader (The Prose Reader [Pearson] in its eleventh edition), a series of books for developmental English called Mosaics (Pearson), and Nexus: A Rhetorical Reader for Writers (Pearson), which combines traditional rhetorical modes with students' interest in technology.

Historically they have provided convenient solutions for personal communication and content consumption, but increasingly we are seeing powerful content creation capabilities appearing on phones, tablets and even watches. What does this mean for today’s learning spaces and practices? This presentation explores mobile rhetorics across digital creativity as a means to open new learning spaces and practices that move millennial makers into the realm of digital invention. Education is all too often concerned with preserving the known. Mobility, therefore, is more than a technical opportunity or pedagogical aspiration, it is the compossibility that must inform the entire educational mission. In order to invent new systems of knowledge production, therefore we must invent creatively mobile and rhetorically rich heuristics for new modes of composition spaces.

The TPP is a groundbreaking mega trade agreement among 12 nations (Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, Canada, United States, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Brunei Darussalam). In October, Indonesia indicated that it too would join the TPP, which covers approximately 40% of global economic output.
The TPP eliminates more than 18,000 tariff lines and introduces trade rules in innovative and emerging areas such as state-owned entities, e-commerce and information flows. Following several years of negotiations, the TPP governments finally announced the conclusion of the negotiations in October 2015.
Yet executives have found themselves in regulatory limbo. First, details of the TPP deal were not available during negotiations. The concluded text was released only recently, forcing the market to examine its consequences following years of misinformation and inconsistent versions…..
Second, the TPP agreement needs to be ratified by each TPP member country, which raises serious political challenges. For example, the United States is in presidential election mode, and both the Democrats and Republicans use anti-TPP rhetoric as a political tool. Elections in other TPP member countries have led to new leadership that might change key trade policies.
Corporations’ business decisions depend on regulatory certainty, but as the passing of TPP legislation faces various hurdles, corporate decision-making processes will need to remain flexible.

Corporate executives have been following the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade negotiations closely. The TPP is a groundbreaking mega trade agreement among 12 nations (Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, Canada, United States, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Brunei Darussalam). In October, Indonesia indicated that it too would join the TPP, which covers approximately 40% of global economic output.
The TPP eliminates more than 18,000 tariff lines and introduces trade rules in innovative and emerging areas such as state-owned entities, e-commerce and information flows. Following several years of negotiations, the TPP governments finally announced the conclusion of the negotiations in October 2015.
Yet executives have found themselves in regulatory limbo. First, details of the TPP deal were not available during negotiations. The concluded text was released only recently, forcing the market to examine its consequences following years of misinformation and inconsistent versions…..
Second, the TPP agreement needs to be ratified by each TPP member country, which raises serious political challenges. For example, the United States is in presidential election mode, and both the Democrats and Republicans use anti-TPP rhetoric as a political tool. Elections in other TPP member countries have led to new leadership that might change key trade policies.
Corporations’ business decisions depend on regulatory certainty, but as the passing of TPP legislation faces various hurdles, corporate decision-making processes will need to remain flexible.
