Modern Guilt is the eighth official studio album and eleventh overall by American alternative artist Beck. It was released on July 8, 2008, fulfilling Beck's recording contract with Interscope Records, along with Geffen as well. The album lasts 33 minutes, making it the shortest album by Beck to date.
Modern Guilt features two contributions by Cat Power and was produced by Beck and Danger Mouse.
A vinyl record of the album, including download codes for the 320-kbit/s digital version of the album direct from the master vinyl, was released on July 22, 2008.
The album received generally positive reviews upon release, earning a rating of 77 out of 100 on Metacritic.Filter said of the album "Beck is somehow more aware while puffing out his waves of broken poetry as opposed to the casual seed-spitting he has been known to turn to," and Allmusic said that it was "an effective dosage of 21st century paranoia." Some negative reviews, such as PopMatters, said that the album "lacks the unique resonating timbres one is accustomed to with Beck," and The Guardian called it "a vanity project". In December 2008, Modern Guilt was nominated for Best Alternative Album at the 51st Grammy Awards, but it later lost to In Rainbows by Radiohead.
Beck Hansen (born Bek David Campbell; July 8, 1970), known by the stage name Beck, is an American singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He rose to fame in the early 1990s with his lo-fi, sonically experimental style, and he became well known for creating musical collages of a wide range of styles. His later recordings encompass folk, funk, soul, hip hop, alternative rock, country and psychedelia. He has released 12 studio albums, as well as several non-album singles and a book of sheet music.
Born in Los Angeles in 1970, Beck discovered hip hop and folk music in his teens and began to perform locally at coffeehouses and clubs. He moved to New York City in 1989 and became involved in the city's small but intense anti-folk movement. After returning to his hometown in the early 1990s, he cut his breakthrough single "Loser", which became a worldwide hit in 1994. His 1996 album Odelay produced hit singles, topped critic polls and won several awards. He released the stripped-down Mutations in 1998, and the funk-infused Midnite Vultures in 1999. The downcast, acoustic Sea Change (2002) showcased a more serious Beck, and 2005's Guero returned to sample-based production. The Information (2006) was inspired by electro-funk and hip hop, and Modern Guilt (2008), likewise, by 1960s music. In February 2014, Beck released the album Morning Phase. It won Album of the Year at the 57th Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015.

Gamma radiation (sometimes called gamma ray), denoted by the lower-case Greek letter gamma (γ), is extremely high-frequency electromagnetic radiation and therefore consists of high-energy photons. Paul Villard, a French chemist and physicist, discovered gamma radiation in 1900 while studying radiation emitted by radium. In 1903, Ernest Rutherford named this radiation gamma rays. Rutherford had previously discovered two other types of radioactive decay, which he named alpha and beta rays.
Gamma rays are ionizing radiation, and are thus biologically hazardous. Decay of an atomic nucleus from a high energy state to a lower energy state, a process called gamma decay, produces gamma radiation. This is what Villard had observed.
Natural sources of gamma rays on Earth include gamma decay of radionuclides and secondary radiation from atmospheric interactions with cosmic ray particles. Rare terrestrial natural sources produce gamma rays that are not of a nuclear origin, such as lightning strikes and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes. Additionally, gamma rays are produced by a number of astronomical processes in which very high-energy electrons are produced, that in turn cause secondary gamma rays via bremsstrahlung, inverse Compton scattering, and synchrotron radiation. However, a large fraction of such astronomical gamma rays are screened by Earth's atmosphere and can only be detected by spacecraft. Gamma rays are produced by nuclear fusion in stars including the Sun (such as the CNO cycle), but are absorbed or inelastically scattered by the stellar material before escaping and are not observable from Earth.

Beck - Modern Guilt. Third single out of "Modern Guilt"
"Modern Guilt" I feel uptight when I walk in the city I feel so cold when I'm at home Feels like everything's starting to hit me I lost my bearings ten minutes ago Modern guilt, I'm stranded with nothing Modern guilt, I'm under lock and key Misapprehension Is turning into convention Don't know what I've done but I feel ashamed Standing outside the glass on the sidewalk These people talk about impossible things And I'm falling out of the conversation And I'm a pawn piece in a human shield Modern guilt is all in our hands Modern guilt won't get me to bed Say what you will Smoke your last cigarette Don't know what I've done but I feel afraid

Beck performing "Gamma Ray" - a single from his 2008 Interscope/XL album "Modern Guilt." Lyrics- If I could hold hold out for now With these ice caps melting down With the transistor sound And my Chevrolet terraplane Going around around around Come on little gamma ray Standing in a hurricane Your brains are bored Like a refugee From a house that's burning And the heat wave's calling your name She's got on a cactus crown With a dot dot dot on her brow And she speaks inside a cloud With her countenance turning around It hit me like a gamma ray Standing in a hurricane And I'm pulling out thorns Smokestack lightning out my window I want to know what I've lost today Come a little gamma ray Standing in a hurricane When your body's bored Like a re...
Beck performing "Walls" from his 2008 Interscope/XL album "Modern Guilt." Lyrics- Some days we get a thrill in our brains Some days it turns to malaise You see a face in the veneer Reflecting on the surface of fear Because you know that we're better than that Some days are worse than you can imagine How am I supposed to live with that With all these train wrecks coming at random? Hey, what are you gonna do When those walls are falling down Falling down on you? Hey, what are you gonna do When those walls are falling down Falling down on you? You got warheads stacked in the kitchen You treat distraction like it's a religion With a rattlesnake step in your rhythm We do the best with the souls we've been given Because you know we're nothing speci...

"Replica" Make a perfect replica of your life Cut the paper with exacto knife Tape it up, tape it up Against the howling wind I'm so tired don't know where to begin It's so unreal It's all I need This replica I was the last to see me down on my knees These antibodies learn to be the disease And I learn to be what fights against me We'll make a replica, a place we can sleep And we could live in a hollow tree Grow up old and bury the sea And when this replica begins to look cheap I'd throw it out but now it's home to me It's so unreal It's all I need This replica Build it up Build it up This replica Now we build it up Build it up Build it up Build it up Build it up
