BREACHING THE MEUSE May 14th, 1940 -
Having driven through the Ardennes without any losses, the men of the 1st Panzer Division had reached the Meuse River. The French were totally surprised by the sudden approach of the Germans. Despite their shock, the French put up a spirited defense and even managed to contain the German bridgehead. But lacking any armored reinforcements to drive back the Germans, the French were forced to withdraw. The Fall of France had begun.

He wanted to circumvent the northern end of the Siegfried Line and this required the operation to seize the bridges across the Maas (Meuse River) and two arms of the Rhine (the Waal and the Lower Rhine) as well as several smaller canals and tributaries. Crossing the Lower Rhine would allow the Allies to encircle Germany's industrial heartland in the Ruhr from the north. It made large-scale use of airborne forces, whose tactical objectives were to secure the bridges and allow a rapid advance by armored units into Northern Germany.
Several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured at the beginning of the operation but Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks' XXX Corps ground force advance was delayed by the demolition of a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal, an extremely overstretched supply line at Son, and failure to capture the main road bridge over the river Waal before 20 September. At Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division encountered far stronger resistance than anticipated. In the ensuing battle, only a small force managed to hold one end of the Arnhem road bridge and after the ground forces failed to relieve them, they were overrun on 21 September. The rest of the division, trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, had to be evacuated on 25 September. The Allies had failed to cross the Rhine in sufficient force and the river remained a barrier to their advance until offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. The failure of Market Garden ended Allied expectations of finishing the war by Christmas 1944.

"The environment is full of low noise humming of the ships on the river Maas (La Meuse) 200m away. The 3m high corn-field absorbs the most high frequencies from the shipping.
The steel railway-bridge over the river is on 200m to.
I have compressed the noise of the running trains that much that the total of the recording is nice to listen to.
Behind me is a river-bridge for normal traffic. The noise from there is rely low.
In the quiet part of the recording the call of magpie, geese and woodpecker are nice. There are more little birds calling sometimes, but I do not know what they are.
The barking dog's opposite the river are nice to hear."

Mission 1 Elsenborn Ridge.
Defend the Victory points
A large number of German forces, under control of the Sixth Panzer Army, are making an advance on Elsenborn. If the town falls, the Germans will be able to sweep through the Ardennes, the rest of Belgium and onwards towards the Netherlands.
Hold Elsenborn from the defensive position on the ridge to the east of the town.To assist you,5th Corps is on stand-by and ready to provide artillery support.Coordinate with them to fend of German assaults.
FOX COMPANY RANGERS
“Fox” Company provides a substantial amount of additional gameplay options, significantly increasing replay ability, and offers an entirely new perspective on how the battle unfolds.
The Fox Company Rangers, led by the fiery Captain Monte Durante, are an elite fighting force focused on powerful, flexible infantry. Utilizing equipment and weapons as force multipliers, they are able to use small groups of infantry to harass larger and more powerful forces. This combines with their ability to quickly field units, as well as their use of precision artillery strikes and the M83 Cluster Bomb, to allow Fox to efficiently control the battle field, even in the toughest of situations.
Company of Heroes 2- Ardennes Assault is a harrowing new chapter in the critically acclaimed series. Continuing the story in World War II, this exciting campaign places you in the heart of the battle, once described by Churchill as “...undoubtedly the greatest American battle of the War”. This pivotal conflict is known to many as ‘The Battle of the Bulge.’
The Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945) was a major German offensive campaign launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in Belgium, France and Luxembourg on the Western Front toward the end of World War II in Europe. Hitler planned the offensive with the primary goal to recapture the important harbour of Antwerp. The surprise attack caught the Allied forces completely off guard. United States forces bore the brunt of the attack and incurred the highest casualties for any operation during the war. The battle also severely depleted Germany's war-making resources.
The battle was known by different names. The Germans referred to it as Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein ("Operation Watch on the Rhine"), while the French named it the Bataille des Ardennes ("Battle of the Ardennes"). The Allies called it the Ardennes Counteroffensive. The phrase "Battle of the Bulge" was coined by contemporary press to describe the way the Allied front line bulged inward on wartime news maps and became the best known name for the battle.
The German offensive was supported by several subordinate operations known as Unternehmen Bodenplatte, Greif, and Währung. As well as stopping Allied transport over the channel to the harbor of Antwerp, these operations were intended to split the British and American Allied line in half, so the Germans could then proceed to encircle and destroy four Allied armies, forcing the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in the Axis Powers' favor. Once that was accomplished, Hitler could fully concentrate on the eastern theatre of war.
Near-complete surprise was achieved by a combination of Allied overconfidence, preoccupation with Allied offensive plans, and poor aerial reconnaissance. The Germans attacked a weakly defended section of the Allied line, taking advantage of heavily overcast weather conditions, which grounded the Allies' overwhelmingly superior air forces. Fierce resistance on the northern shoulder of the offensive around Elsenborn Ridge and in the south around Bastogne blocked German access to key roads to the northwest and west that they counted on for success; columns that were supposed to advance along parallel routes found themselves on the same roads. This and terrain that favored the defenders threw the German advance behind schedule and allowed the Allies to reinforce the thinly placed troops. Improved weather conditions permitted air attacks on German forces and supply lines, which sealed the failure of the offensive. In the wake of the defeat, many experienced German units were left severely depleted of men and equipment, as survivors retreated to the defenses of the Siegfried Line.
About 610,000 American forces were involved in the battle, and 89,000 were injured, including 19,000 killed. It was the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the United States in World War II.
