This is unique film of the father of modern sculpture, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), working in his studio in Paris in 1915.
What is particularly interesting in the various pieces of footage is seeing -- close up - the artist's process with marble.

Subject: The Rodin Coil
To Whom It May Concern:
Two years ago I met Marko Rodin through a mutual acquaintance. Mr. Rodin shared some of his results with me at that time. It became clear to me that Mr. Rodin's work was a synthesis of numerical patterns which had previously been overlooked by conventional science and mathematics. In hopes of bridging the gap between Mr. Rodin's discoveries and conventional science, I put forth an analytical framework in which mathematical formulae generate the numerical patterns of the Rodin Torus. These formulae suggested that the Rodin Torus lies not just on the surface of the "doughnut" shape, but into the interior as well; in other words, the Rodin Torus is three dimensional.
This mathematical formulation is as yet incomplete, and the physical meaning of these numerical phenomena remain unexplored still. Yet in my career I have several times discovered new mathematical formulations which have led to new products. In the late 1970's I discovered Atomic Modeling which revolutionized computer performance modeling, measurement, and sizing. In the early 1990's I discovered new ways to express the time-dependent behavior of program code, which led to reductions of program code size of 50% of the original size for all programs to which it was applied. I mention these facts merely to convince the reader that my intuition has a history of success in the practical application of new mathematics.
Now I am completely convinced that the Rodin Torus will likewise lead to new and revolutionary advances in art and science. Mr. Rodin's work has suffered from a lack of adequate scientific attention, and I am sure that as the research momentum builds and the proper relationship between the Rodin Torus and conventional science is fully understood, both areas of endeavor will attain new heights. I am very much looking forward to playing a role in this adventure.

En partenariat avec le Musée Rodin, qui, à partir du 13 novembre (jusqu'au 27 septembre 2015), présente une nouvelle exposition : "Rodin, le laboratoire de la création."
Deuxième moitié du XIX siècle. Auguste Rodin ressuscite la sculpture qui était figée dans la léthargie d'un académisme de bon ton. Rodin, c'est la synthèse des fondamentaux de la sculpture : l'art grec, l'art roman, l'architecture des cathédrales, l'enseignement de la nature, Donatello et Michel Ange - l'art du modelé, les jeux d'ombre et de lumière, la vérité crue des personnages loin de toute idéalisation, l'exaltation des corps et de la chair, le tourment métaphysique. Après des études médiocres, refusé trois fois aux Beaux Arts, Rodin, élève de la "Petite Ecole" destinée aux artisans et aux décorateurs, travaille en tant que praticien dans des ateliers célèbres. D'emblée ses sculptures font scandale: "L'homme au nez cassé" en rupture avec les canons esthétiques de l'époque, le Balzac déroutant par sa facture abstraite qui surgit tel un roc... Les commanditaires sont choqués, les oeuvres en métamorphose incessante finiront par ne plus être livrées. Car l'oeuvre de Rodin est en perpétuelle expansion, d'agrandissements en fragmentations, de mutilations en collages, de modelé velouté en matériau brut, l'oeuvre n'est jamais considérée comme achevée. Dans la deuxième partie de la vie de Rodin, le dessin qui a le privilège de la rapidité et de la spontanéité devient une oeuvre à part entière. Les dernières forces du Maître seront employées à la création de son Musée dans l'hôtel Biron. Le Penseur médite sur la tombe de ce sculpteur du XIX siècle qui par ses idées, ses techniques de création, ses audaces - la forme engendre la forme - ouvrit des voies nouvelles pour le XX siècle.

To Whom It May Concern:
Two years ago I met Marko Rodin through a mutual acquaintance. Mr. Rodin shared some of his results with me at that time. It became clear to me that Mr. Rodin's work was a synthesis of numerical patterns which had previously been overlooked by conventional science and mathematics. In hopes of bridging the gap between Mr. Rodin's discoveries and conventional science, I put forth an analytical framework in which mathematical formulae generate the numerical patterns of the Rodin Torus. These formulae suggested that the Rodin Torus lies not just on the surface of the "doughnut" shape, but into the interior as well; in other words, the Rodin Torus is three dimensional.
This mathematical formulation is as yet incomplete, and the physical meaning of these numerical phenomena remain unexplored still. Yet in my career I have several times discovered new mathematical formulations which have led to new products. In the late 1970's I discovered Atomic Modeling which revolutionized computer performance modeling, measurement, and sizing. In the early 1990's I discovered new ways to express the time-dependent behavior of program code, which led to reductions of program code size of 50% of the original size for all programs to which it was applied. I mention these facts merely to convince the reader that my intuition has a history of success in the practical application of new mathematics.
Now I am completely convinced that the Rodin Torus will likewise lead to new and revolutionary advances in art and science. Mr. Rodin's work has suffered from a lack of adequate scientific attention, and I am sure that as the research momentum builds and the proper relationship between the Rodin Torus and conventional science is fully understood, both areas of endeavor will attain new heights. I am very much looking forward to playing a role in this adventure.

En partenariat avec le Musée Rodin, qui, à partir du 13 novembre (jusqu'au 27 septembre 2015), présente une nouvelle exposition : "Rodin, le laboratoire de la création."
Deuxième moitié du XIX siècle. Auguste Rodin ressuscite la sculpture qui était figée dans la léthargie d'un académisme de bon ton. Rodin, c'est la synthèse des fondamentaux de la sculpture : l'art grec, l'art roman, l'architecture des cathédrales, l'enseignement de la nature, Donatello et Michel Ange - l'art du modelé, les jeux d'ombre et de lumière, la vérité crue des personnages loin de toute idéalisation, l'exaltation des corps et de la chair, le tourment métaphysique. Après des études médiocres, refusé trois fois aux Beaux Arts, Rodin, élève de la "Petite Ecole" destinée aux artisans et aux décorateurs, travaille en tant que praticien dans des ateliers célèbres. D'emblée ses sculptures font scandale: "L'homme au nez cassé" en rupture avec les canons esthétiques de l'époque, le Balzac déroutant par sa facture abstraite qui surgit tel un roc... Les commanditaires sont choqués, les oeuvres en métamorphose incessante finiront par ne plus être livrées. Car l'oeuvre de Rodin est en perpétuelle expansion, d'agrandissements en fragmentations, de mutilations en collages, de modelé velouté en matériau brut, l'oeuvre n'est jamais considérée comme achevée. Dans la deuxième partie de la vie de Rodin, le dessin qui a le privilège de la rapidité et de la spontanéité devient une oeuvre à part entière. Les dernières forces du Maître seront employées à la création de son Musée dans l'hôtel Biron. Le Penseur médite sur la tombe de ce sculpteur du XIX siècle qui par ses idées, ses techniques de création, ses audaces - la forme engendre la forme - ouvrit des voies nouvelles pour le XX siècle.

Early this summer, right outside the boundaries of "The City" with all it's contemporary galleries, at the Rye Arts Center in Rye, New York, a collection of high-quality artworks curated by sculptor Bob Clyatt was presented to the world. Beyond Rodin: New Directions in Contemporary Sculpture Figurative Sculpture is an exhibition of 19 U.S. based sculptors who are creating innovative works built on the foundations of classical training, but with applications that go beyond the display of virtuosity and into the realm of emotional expression and pathos that seems to elude so much contemporary art.

Auguste Rodin es considerado uno de los escultores más importantes del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Nació en París el 12 de noviembre de 1840; era hijo de un oficial de policía. Estudió arte en una escuela pública para artesanos y por su cuenta en el Museo del Louvre, ya que no fue admitido en la École des Beaux-Arts.
Con 17 años ingresó en la Escuela de Bellas Artes. Un año más tarde (1858) comenzó a ganarse la vida como cantero realizando objetos decorativos. Completó su formación escultórica con maestros como Dalou, Cazin, Maindron y Klagmann.
En 1862 murió su hermana Marie, con la que se encontraba muy unido. Auguste Rodin es considerado uno de los escultores más importantes del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Nació en París el 12 de noviembre de 1840; era hijo de un oficial de policía. Estudió arte en una escuela pública para artesanos y por su cuenta en el Museo del Louvre, ya que no fue admitido en la École des Beaux-Arts.
Con 17 años ingresó en la Escuela de Bellas Artes. Un año más tarde (1858) comenzó a ganarse la vida como cantero realizando objetos decorativos. Completó su formación escultórica con maestros como Dalou, Cazin, Maindron y Klagmann.
En 1862 murió su hermana Marie, con la que se encontraba muy unido.
