Well a relatively new blood thinner designed to treat and prevent blood clots and lower the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation is drawing concern over associated risk The Wall Street Journal reports that discuss potential lawsuits related to its use and Attorney Karl Truman explains. What's going on with this drug, Karl? Karl Truman: The drug is called Xarelto. We see it a lot on the media, a lot of advertising for it right now and it's a blood thinner drug and it's an alternative to other blood thinners out on the market. The problem with Xarelto is that other blood thinners, if you have a traumatic event or a bleed or a brain bleed, you know, doctors have a reversing agent that they can try to control the bleeding. Xarelto doesn't have that and so it has caused a lot of other problems. So that, that's what we're investigating right now is any type of incident where someone has had uncontrollable bleeding could be gastrointestinal bleeding, uncontrollable vaginal bleeding, bleeding on the brain and there has caused, even been incidents of stroke and even death related to this drug. Speaker 1: And this drug is widely used, has been widely used for some time? Karl Truman: It's a, yes, well since, uh, 2011 is when it was approved by the FDA, so it's been on the market since that time and it's been gaining in usage and so we're seeing, uh, situations involving this drug and which is why I'm here today to talk about it. Speaker 1: Okay and then often times when you see those commercials there's always some fast talking announcer who says attention and they blow past a bunch of information. Does that not clear a drug company? Karl Truman: Well not always. Obviously, yes, they'll, you know, they look at their laundry list of potential side effects but there's a little more to it than that and so, uh, you know, so that's not going to necessarily let them off the hook. All right and here's, here again are some of the things that Xeralto is linked to, so you may know someone in your family who has been having some issues. You may want to check and see if this drug has been used. Is it always used by that name, Karl? Karl Truman: Xeralto is the brand name that we're looking at in these cases and, yes, any type of these conditions that involve bleeding and uncontrolled bleeding, you know, we definitely would like to investigate those claims. Speaker 1: All right and what is your recommendation for people that know of something, something about themselves or a relative or friend?
