Cleveland native and one-hit wonder Frederick's recording of "Gentle (Calling Your Name") exploded like no other record ever did for Akron's tiny Heat Records. Aided by Janice Dowlin's exciting soprano, the simplistic romantic duet became very popular, and a daytime soap opera used it as background music on several segments. Released under the name Frederick, Janice was barely mentioned, scandalous because she gave the record its juice. He duets with Lyn Jo Jones on "Girl I Know You're Lonely," a good "for lovers only" ballad that is more elaborate (production-wise) than "Gentle"; however, it lacks the charm of its predecessor, primarily because Lyn Jo Jones doesn't appear until the song is practically fading out. He solos on the other tracks and comes off as rather nondescript, which is probably an unfair assessment since he's a second tenor -- a popular '50s voice range that fell from favor in subsequent decades to the more exciting falsetto and baritone voices. But to Frederick's credit, he works what he's got. "Games," the follow-up to "Gentle," adeserved more spins then it received; it's complemented by kittenish female vocals and guys playing Three Card Molly in the background. Producer Le'Ray Ruffin Jr did a good job mixing the album's fast songs, midtempo numbers, and ballads, eight in all. I would like to see what Ruffin can do with a better songs and a bigger recording budget.

First published in 1845, the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass became Frederick Douglass's most well known work. It is as the name implies his autobiography.
Frederick Douglass was born a slave and underwent horrendous treatment at the hands of his owners. He later escaped to the north and became an outspoken abolitionist. Not only did he have a great life story to tell, his skill in telling it has long been admired. Douglass traveled throughout Europe lecturing about slavery.
After publication, the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass quickly became a best seller and within three years there were over 11,000 copies published in the United States, had been reprinted nine times and had been translated into two languages (Dutch and French). The book was so well written that some argued that an ex-slave could not be as articulate as Frederick Douglass demonstrated himself to be. Of course, Douglass did write the book and it stands today as a monument to the human spirit and what may be achieved with hard work no matter where in society somebody may begin.
Frederick Douglass had to leave the United States and flee to Ireland for a period after the books publication and its immediate success for some believed that Douglas' ex-owner Hugh Auld might try to get his "property" returned. After two years he was able to return to the United States after his freedom was purchased for $710 from Auld.

Frederick Douglass published his highly acclaimed third autobiography, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, in 1881 and revised it in 1892. The emancipation of American slaves during and following the American Civil War enabled him to relate in this volume more details of his life as a slave and his escape from slavery than he could in his two previous autobiographies, which would have put him and his family in danger. It is the only Douglass autobiography to discuss his life during and after the Civil War, his encounters with several American presidents including Lincoln and Garfield, his account of the ill-fated "Freedman's Bank", and his service as the United States Marshall of the District of Columbia and as U. S. Minister to Haiti. Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith (born December 30, 1946) is an American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.
Called the "Godmother of Punk", her work was a fusion of rock and poetry. Smith's most widely known song is "Because the Night", which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. In 2005, Patti Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, and in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On November 17, 2010, she won the National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids. She is also a recipient of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.

Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, c. February 1818 – February 20, 1895) was an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Many Northerners also found it hard to believe that such a great orator had been a slave.
Douglass wrote several autobiographies, eloquently describing his experiences in slavery in his 1845 autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which became influential in its support for abolition. He wrote two more autobiographies, with his last, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, published in 1881 and covering events through and after the Civil War. After the Civil War, Douglass remained active in the United States' struggle to reach its potential as a "land of the free". Douglass actively supported women's suffrage. Without his approval he became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the impracticable and small Equal Rights Party ticket. Douglass held multiple public offices.

From Allmusic: Cleveland native and one-hit wonder Frederick's recording of "Gentle (Calling Your Name") exploded like no other record ever did for Akron's tiny Heat Records. Aided by Janice Dowlin's exciting soprano, the simplistic romantic duet became very popular, and a daytime soap opera used it as background music on several segments. Released under the name Frederick, Janice was barely mentioned, scandalous because she gave the record its juice. Producer Le'Ray Ruffin Jr did a good job mixing the album's fast songs, midtempo numbers, and ballads, eight in all. I would like to see what Ruffin can do with a better songs and a bigger recording budget.

Frederick Douglass was born a slave and underwent horrendous treatment at the hands of his owners. He later escaped to the north and became an outspoken abolitionist. Not only did he have a great life story to tell, his skill in telling it has long been admired. Douglass traveled throughout Europe lecturing about slavery.

He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Many Northerners also found it hard to believe that such a great orator had been a slave.
Douglass wrote several autobiographies, eloquently describing his experiences in slavery in his 1845 autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which became influential in its support for abolition. He wrote two more autobiographies, with his last, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, published in 1881 and covering events through and after the Civil War. After the Civil War, Douglass remained active in the United States' struggle to reach its potential as a "land of the free". Douglass actively supported women's suffrage. Without his approval, he became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the impracticable and small Equal Rights Party ticket. Douglass held multiple public offices.
Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all people, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant, famously quoted as saying, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.

Die kommt bei F.F. immer. Unausweichlich. So auch in diesem Werk.
Das Buch ist im Vergleich zu früheren Schriften leichter lesbar. Dennoch fließen auch hier wieder Infos ein, die nur durch eine außerdordentliche Sachkenntnis und sauber, penible Recherchen zu erlangen sind. Gewiss ein Grund für die jahrzehntelange, treue Anhängerschaft. F.F.? Gütesiegel!
