Oxford Atheists, Secularists and Humanists is a merger of the Oxford Secular Society (founded 2006) and the Oxford Atheist Society (founded 2008). The combined Society exists to promote and improve the understanding and discussion of Atheism, Secularism and Humanism, recognising that these are distinct traditions. The society is open to everyone, students and Oxford residents, regardless of their personal religious or political beliefs.
We hold weekly events in Oxford termtime, either speaker events (with plenty of Q&A) or socials. We also work with other local groups, including the community group Oxford Humanists to hold an annual Think Weekof free events with other local groups, We try to cater for a wide variety of views by treating everyone with respect and allowing all involved a chance to put forward their opinions logically, without anyone resorting to anything derogatory.
Patrons and Senior Members
Richard Dawkins needs no introduction. As scientist, broadcaster and author, he is a champion for science and rationality – and also a Patron of OxASH.
Evan Harris, also a Patron, is a former MP for Oxford West and Abingdon and a campaigner for science, evidence-based policy, human rights, and equality.
Peter Atkins, the celebrated professor of chemistry, was a Patron of Sec Soc and remains Patron of OxASH. As well as his ubiquitous chemistry textbooks, Prof. Atkins has also written widely on religion and science.
Peter Kail was the Senior Member of Oxford Atheists and now of OxASH. We are grateful for the support provided by Antony Eagle, Tutor in Philosophy at Exeter College, as Sec Soc’s Senior Member.

OxASH is a member of the National Federation of Atheist, Humanist and Secular Student Societies (AHS) and affiliated to the British Humanist Association and National Secular Society.
OxASH is a registered Student Society at Oxford University. We hold annual Elections in Hilary Term. The current version of the constitution is available here
