Cerys Matthews talks about L'Estaca ("the stake"), a song composed by the Catalan artist Lluís Llach in 1968.
This song, which has been translated into several languages, has become so popular that in many countries it is considered a local song. It was composed during the Spanish nationalist dictatorship of General Franco, and is a call for unity of action to achieve freedom. The song has become a symbol of the fight for freedom everywhere and lately a symbol of the struggle of Catalonia's people for independence from Spain.
Polish singer-songwriter Jacek Kaczmarski was inspired to write new lyrics to the melody of L'Estaca. The result was Mury, which became one of his most famous compositions after it was adopted by the Polish trade union Solidarność and sung at countless rallies, meetings, protests and strikes throughout Poland during the 1980s.
L'Estaca is also an anthem for the supporters of the rugby team USAP, of Perpignan, in Northern Catalonia, in France.

Sardana Dancing - Catalan Cultural Dance.
The sardana (Catalan pronunciation: [sərˈðanə], Western Catalan: [saɾˈðana]; plural sardanes) is a type of circle dance typical of Catalonia, Spain. The dance was originally from the Empordà region, but started gaining popularity throughout Catalonia during the 20th century.
There are two main types, the original sardana curta (short sardana) style and the more modern sardana llarga (long sardana), which is more popular. Other more unusual sardanes are the sardana de lluïment and the sardana revessa.
The origin of the sardana is not clear. It is said that this dance was already popular in the 16th century.[citation needed]
What remains undisputed is that the sardana was a popular dance in Empordà, Rosselló and Garrotxa (that is to say, the northern part of Catalonia and the French Catalonia) at the middle of the 19th century. Contributing to its mounting popularity by this time were the additions from similarly popular genres such as zarzuela and the popular Italian operas of the time, which increasingly made the sardana a fad dance.
As the rise of the sardana took place, in the context of the Renaixença or newborn Catalan nationalism, the origins of the dance were embellished in order to symbolize a distinct Catalan ethos as to serve Catalan nationalism. Modern choreography was established as late as the end of the 19th century and features slight differences from the original North-Catalonian dance. Pep Ventura's band is credited for stabilizing different variants around a clear 6/8 rhythm and fixing the instrumental ensemble. Though some Iberian and Mediterranean circle dances follow similar patterns, instrumental music for the sardana has achieved a complexity of its own.
In the year 2010, the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalonia government) added the sardana to the Catàleg del Patrimoni Festiu de Catalunya (Catalonia's festivities heritage catalogue) and declared it a festivity of national interest.
Music for the sardana is played by a cobla, a band consisting of 10 wind instruments, double bass and a tamborí (very small drum) played by 11 musicians. The cobla has five woodwind instruments: the flabiol which is a small fipple flute, and the tenora and tible (two of each) which belong to the oboe family. These and the tamborí are typical Catalan instruments. The brass instruments include: two trumpets, two fiscorns, and a trombone (usually a valve trombone). The double bass was traditionally a three-stringed one, but now the part is usually written for and played on the modern (four-stringed) instrument.
In Spanish and French Catalonia, about one hundred and thirty cobles are active, most of which are amateur bands. Outside Catalonia, there is at least one more cobla: Cobla La Principal d'Amsterdam.

Catalonia President Arthur Mas says Catalans have voted Yes to independence. Mas said in the coming weeks he will set a basis for Catalonia to become independent. With 98 percent of the vote counted, the Together for Yes group managed to gain 62 seats in the 135-member parliament. If they join forces with the left-wing pro-independence CUP, they will have the seats needed to push forward their plan for independence. Both parties have promised to break away from Spain within 18 months. As the results in Catalonia’s elections have come out, the head of Basque Country says he wants to hold a legal consultation on the northern region’s future within Spain. The autonomous region’s Prime Minister, Inigo Urkullu, said Basque is a nation and it needs a new political statute.

The European Union’s failure to consider the smooth integration of breakaway regions is tarnishing its democratic credentials.
The EU seems to prefer the inclusion of new, poorly prepared members, than the assimilation of established, firmly pro-European nations such as Scotland and Catalonia.
Does Europe need a practical new strategy for the government of its regions? Do we need less centralised 19th Century command and control, and more emphasis on regional autonomy, including tax powers?
The issue for Europe’s separatist regions is ‘democracy’ - a right to choose. A right to self-determination. It’s time for a modern approach unchained by history.

Travel video about destination Barcelona in Spain.
Barcelona is one of the most lively harbor cities on the Mediterranean and after Madrid, Spain's second largest city and the capital of Catalonia. Intimate squares, small palaces and tangled alleys provide a good insight into its history as Iberians, Greeks and Romans once had trading posts there.
La Rambla is a wide and shady boulevard that travels through the old town to the harbor and is where life goes on both night and day. It's also where street artists perform, shoeblacks work diligently and portrait painters tout for trade among the passing tourists.
The Museu Marítim is situated in the royal dockyards of Drassanes, that were built when the city was at its zenith. Its buildings are unique examples of Gothic architecture and the vast dimensions of the dockyard allowed 30 ships to be built simultaneously in the name of the Catalonian-Aragon crown.
Few parks are as famous as the Park Güell. With this, Antoni Gaudi created a new design concept in this fabulous garden city. At its entrance, Gaudi placed a colorful lizard as a symbol of the water that is collected in subterranean cisterns and is used for the distribution of water in the park. The city itself is also featured in Gaudi's magnificent fantasies. The Palau Güell was treated to an ostentatious roof with a great array of air shafts and chimneys. But the sight that captures the imagination of most who see it is the amazing façade of the Casa Mila, a unique apartment block without equal. Not a single wall is straight, glass and plaster were used for its façade and colourful ornamental ceramics complete the work.
Barcelona is a melting pot that ranges from Gothic to Modernism, a veritable explosion of joie de vivre and creativity.

Catalonia, Spain Travel Guide: Devil’s Dance (Diables) a stunning elements of Catalan festivals and one of the most deeply rooted traditions.
La Patum, is a popular and traditional festival that is celebrated each year in the Catalan city of Berga during Corpus Christi. The Patum festival features a series of parades, street show, characters and figures that fill the streets of Berga every spring.
The Ball de diables is a theatrical representation of the struggle between the good and the evil. This celebration occurs between the month of August and September in main cities as Barcelona, Cervera, Tarragona, Reus, Igualada, El Vendrell, Vilafranca, Vilanova, etc.
Devil figures, stemming from pagan legends, run through dusk darkened streets brandishing sparking forks amidst flames and fireworks. Firecrackers are attached to the prongs of every pitchfork and the devils and dragons, intermingling with the crowds, began to dance and run through the streets and alleyways twirling the 5-feet plumes of sparks so that they shower down people's heads. It is approximate about 45-minute of riot of sparks, explosions, smoke, devils, dragons and drums!
Hope you enjoy this short video to give you a sense of this tradition.

25 Things to do in Barcelona, Spain | Top Attractions Travel Guide Video Transcript:
This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do around town, feel free to add them in the comments below. And if you want to catch our latest travel videos, don't forget to hit subscribe!
This is part of our Travel in Spain series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Spanish culture, Spanish arts, Spanish foods, Spanish religion, Spanish cuisine and Spanish people.

This is part of our Travel in Catalonia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Catalan culture, Catalan arts, Catalan foods, Catalan religion, Catalan cuisine and Catalan people.

Sights & Attractions in Catalonia.
The Catalonia region, in northeastern Spain, is known for the lively beach resorts of Costa Brava, the Pyrenees mountains and as home to surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Barcelona, the regional capital, has an ancient Gothic Quarter, La Rambla pedestrian mall and several beaches. Antoni Gaudí’s distinctive architecture can be seen at the Sagrada Família basilica and in the colorful mosaics of Park Güell.

Shop for world famous Catalonia ceramics.
If you want to do some shopping in Catalonia, ceramics is a good option. In the small village of Pals, in Catalonia, you can find nice ceramic shops. Like this one. Here you can get great ceramics and cheaper than in London or Paris.
"I have come here many times, it is nice to decorate my home." "What did you buy here?" "A present for a friend, a candle center piece." I wonder what is that for? Maybe it is for drinking wine? Oh, I would not mind to have this. I am Montse Triola, showing you Pals.

Catalonia, Spain travel guide: If you like sports, here is a few that are worth seeing or to go practice. Some of them are not very common in the USA, like rally's, moto trial, canyoning, etc.
I strongly recommend canyoing. Canyoning is born in the Pyrenees of Spain, offers an amazing array of outdoors activities. There are programs of adventure for everyone, all tastes, all fitness levels: canyoning from families to young people or less young people. If you are looking for real fun, this is the real deal.
If you like cars, Rally Catalunya is a must see. Held sometime in October, this competition is one of the most innovative and technically challenging competitions in the World Rally Championship (dirt and asphalt).
If you are into Skiing, in the Pyrenees Mountains there are a total of sixteen resorts offering skiers everything they could require: an attractive array of après ski activities and services. The facilities in these mountains offer the latest ski, leisure and accommodation infrastructure. Baqueira-Beret is the most outstanding ski resorts to be found in the Catalan Pyrenees
One sport worth watching is MotoTrials. MotoTrials - formerly "Observed Trials" is now the pinnacle of off-road riding, as the riders tackle the most severe terrain capable of being conquered by any two or four-wheeled machine.
Hope you enjoy the video, and don't forget to subscribe!!!!

Girona, Catalonia – Spain
http://blog.myvideomedia.com
On the occasion of the Travel Bloggers Conference TBEX the patronage de Tourism Costa Brava Girona invited us to a day trip to Girona. We are accompanied by our knowledgeable and friendly guide Gloria Lomas. She has arranged an exceptional program for us.
The tour's motto: Discover the capital of the Costa Brava.
The route goes along a Orienteering Circuits, which can be found at the 10 different points in the city. These are arranged in such a way that one obtains the best possible overview of the city. With each of these points a myth or a legend of the city is connected. Myths and legends there are many in Girona. Presumably, this is due to the medieval cityscape and the related medieval religion and belief.

Spain, a country on the Iberian peninsula, has a 2000 year old history and art. In Madrid we take a look at the Royal Palace and the treasures of the Prado and from here, we can take an excursion to Escorial. On the coast of Catalonia, the Costa Brava, such famous places can be found as Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar. Barcelona is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, saturated by the spirit of Gaudi and Dali. We move on with our journey towards Granada bathing in the sun of the Costa del Sol. The Alhambra, ‘a pearl set in emeralds’ is one of the world’s most famous relics. We take a look at a flamenco night and a corrida, and then visit the romantic Sevilla, which is famous of Queen Isabel, Columbus, Carmen and ‘La Barbier de Seville’. We take a trip to the islands under the Spanish rule: the beautiful Mallorca, Ibiza, famous of its parties and nightlife, and to the ‘Islands of Eternal Spring’, the Canary Islands

The Costa Brava, the ‘wild coast’ is the coast of Catalonia, which, with its yearly 50 million visitors, is one of Europe’s largest holiday paradises. The mild, Mediterranean climate, the crystal clear water, the mysterious, rocky bays, the long, sandy beaches, the southern flora, the wonders of the Spanish and Catalonian cuisine, the historical monuments and artistic values invite more and more visitors each year. Such artists were living and creating here as Salvador Dali, Anton Gaudi, Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Joan Miro. Cadeques is a city of arts, an untouched fishing village, which also has one of Europe’s largest artistic collections. Figueras is mostly known for its Dali museum. They say that once they kept the Holy Grail in the fort above the picturesque San Pere de Rodes monastery. Basalu, which is famous of its stone bridge, is a travel to the Middle Ages. Empuriabrava, with its canals and lagoons is the Venice of Costa Brava. Girona’s old, labyrinth-like city core is one of the most beautiful ones in Spain. Lloret de Mar is inviting the visitor with the promise of the Mediterranean night, being the center of Europe’s beach discos. Tossa de Mar is the most beautiful place of the whole coast, where the bastions of the old fort stand guard over the magnificent beach. Not even 100 kilometers from Costa Brava there is the Catalonian capital, the city of Gaudi, the ‘stage for the zest of life’, one of Europe’s most beautiful and livable cities, Barcelona

Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon. Besieged several times during its history, Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination. Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean is located in Barcelona. The city is known for hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as world-class conferences and expositions and also many international sport tournaments.
Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural centres, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities.[8][9] It is a major cultural and economic centre in southwestern Europe, 24th in the world (before Zürich, after Frankfurt)[10] and a financial centre. In 2008 it was the fourth most economically powerful city by GDP in the European Union and 35th in the world with GDP amounting to €177 billion.[11] In 2012 Barcelona had a GDP of $170 billion; it is leading Spain on both employment and GDP per capita change.[12] In 2009 the city was ranked Europe's third and one of the world's most successful as a city brand.[13] In the same year the city was ranked Europe's fourth best city for business and fastest improving European city, with growth improved by 17% per year,[14] but it has since been in a full recession with declines in both employment and GDP per capita, with some recent signs of the beginning of an economic recovery.[15] Since 2011 Barcelona is a leading smart city in Europe.[16] Barcelona is a transport hub with the Port of Barcelona being one of Europe's principal seaports and busiest European passenger port,[17] an international airport, Barcelona–El Prat Airport, which handles above 35 million passengers per year,[18] an extensive motorway network and a high-speed rail line with a link to France and the rest of Europe.
