Greeks protest against cuts in disability benefits
Greeks protest against cuts in disability benefits
This is the largest mobilization ever staged by disabled Greeks, protesting at the labor and finance ministries. It could be called the march of the damned, yet these physically and mentally challenged people are just as restricted as any other austerity-stricken citizen when it comes to wages, pensions, social and medical insurance. Two years ago, the Greek government decided to begin axing benefits for the disabled, based on the fact that tens of thousands of claims were unfounded. Indeed, there are many cases of kleptomaniacs, arsonists and even sexual offenders who managed to claim and successfully receive a 20 to 30 percent salary or pension bonus in recent years. Six years into the crisis, however, disabled Greeks say the vertical cut in the costs of running a state endorsed welfare and healthcare policy had more to do with keeping up with the country's troikan loan payments than battling fraudulent claims. A special committee was set up in 2011 to brush through disability benefits applications, but last year it was dismantled, established again anew, but now runs understaffed, underfunded and long-winded. Existing benefits have already been cut by 20 percent across the board, many deleted altogether. Marginalized within a handicapped labor market and disregarded by the government, disabled Greeks want the obvious: suitable work, efficient insurance and healthcare and ultimately a way out of a crippled economy.- published: 02 Nov 2013

GREEKS ARE FLEEING GREECE!(HD)
GREEKS ARE FLEEING GREECE!(HD)
Former finance minister, Yiannos Papantoniou, saw trouble ahead: "Greece would not be able to support 11 million people so there will be huge emigration flows," he said. "Disruptions, social disruptions will come. I would say a regime of total anarchy".. Last year 23,800 Greeks emigrated to Germany alone, 90 percent more than the previous year, German data show and Greeks are queuing up to learn German. Most economists agree the austerity measures Greece is labouring under offer it little hope of recovery near term, and some argue that if it leaves the euro, it could export its way back to health on the back of a vastly devalued fiat paper currency. But, barring tourism, it does not have businesses or industries that could drive such a recovery. Even if freed of its debt-cutting targets, the fact the country runs a primary deficit - spending more than it takes in taxes - means it would have to continue austerity measures and, because it would be shut out of international markets, it would have no one to borrow from for a while. Even if you strip interest payments, with a primary current account deficit at about 10 billion euros, it would mean economic life would grind to a halt. Greece will also have a hard time to import oil, foods, medicines and other primary inputs. Imagine the police, without fuel. Natural gas spigots will close. GDP will be hurt by a battered banking system. There will be shortages in basic staples. After a long period, things will maybe return to a better balance but during the first transitional phase will be rough for greek people...- published: 26 Dec 2013
