If you search for 'Deaf Awareness Training' on Google, there are a lot of sites returned, but if you ask a 'person in the street' what it means, they're unlikely to be able to tell you.
That's why we called our video 'Communicating with people who have hearing loss', it may not be as popular, but it's easy to understand.
This video is aimed at people who have little or no understanding of hearing loss, deafness or what can be done to help two-way communication.
Although people sometimes receive some training at work, it's probably even more likely that this video will be more relevant to someone's personal life - communicating with an elderly relative, a neighbour or a stranger in the street.

Deafness, or hearing impairment, is a partial or total inability to hear where the ability would usually be expected.
Hearing sensitivity is indicated by the quietest sound that an animal can detect, called the hearing threshold. In the case of humans and some animals, this threshold can be accurately measured by a behavioral audiogram. A record is made of the quietest sound that consistently prompts a response from the listener. The test is carried out for sounds of different frequencies. There are also electro-physiological tests that can be performed without requiring a behavioral response.
Normal hearing thresholds within any given species are not the same for all frequencies. If different frequencies of sound are played at the same amplitude, some will be perceived as loud, and others quiet or even completely inaudible. Generally, if the gain or amplitude is increased, a sound is more likely to be perceived. Ordinarily, when animals use sound to communicate, hearing in that type of animal is most sensitive for the frequencies produced by calls, or in the case of humans, speech. All levels of the auditory system contribute to this sensitivity toward certain frequencies, from the outer ear's physical characteristics to the nerves and tracts that convey the nerve impulses of the auditory portion of the brain.

She received a BA with honors in English from Stanford and will graduate in June 2013 with a coterminal master's degree in English. While at Stanford, Kolb has been active in the Stanford Equestrian Team, Leland Quarterly, Stanford Daily and Stanford Power to ACT. She aspires to be a writer, scholar and public disability advocate. Kolb was named an American Rhodes scholar in November 2012 and will pursue an MSc in contemporary literature at Oxford beginning in October 2013.
