A grain is a unit of measurement of mass equal to 7001647989100000000♠64.79891 milligrams. It is nominally based upon the mass of a single seed of a cereal. From the Bronze Age into the Renaissance the average masses of wheat and barley grains were part of the legal definition of units of mass. However, there is no evidence of any country ever having used actual seeds or cereal grains. Rather, expressions such as "thirty-two grains of wheat, taken from the middle of the ear" appear to have been ritualistic formulas, essentially the premodern equivalent of legal boilerplate.
The grain was the legal foundation of traditional English weight systems, and is the only unit that is equal throughout the troy, avoirdupois, and apothecaries' systems of mass. The unit was based on the weight of a single grain of barley, considered equivalent to 1 1⁄3 grains of wheat. The fundamental unit of the pre-1527 English weight system known as Tower weights, was a different sort of grain known as the "wheat grain". The Tower wheat grain was defined as exactly 45⁄64 of a troy grain.
Grains are small, hard, dry seeds, with or without attached hulls or fruit layers, harvested for human or animal consumption. Agronomists also call the plants producing such seeds "grain crops". The two main types of commercial grain crops are cereals such as wheat and rye, and legumes such as beans and soybeans. Ubiquity of grain as a food source encouraged use of the term to describe other particles with volume or mass similar to an individual seed.
After being harvested, dry grains are more durable than other staple foods such as starchy fruits (plantains, breadfruit, etc.) and tubers (sweet potatoes, cassava, and more). This durability has made grains well suited to industrial agriculture, since they can be mechanically harvested, transported by rail or ship, stored for long periods in silos, and milled for flour or pressed for oil. Thus, major global commodity markets exist for canola, maize, rice, soybeans, wheat, and other grains but not for tubers, vegetables, or other crops.

A unit train, also called a block train or a trainload service, is a train in which all cars (wagons) carry the same commodity and are shipped from the same origin to the same destination, without being split up or stored en route. This saves time and money, as well as the hassle, delays and confusion associated with assembling and disassembling trains at rail yards near the origin and destination. It also enables railways to compete more effectively with road and internal waterway transport systems, However, unit trains are economical only for high-volume customers. Since unit trains often carry only one commodity, cars are of all the same type, and sometimes the cars are all identical apart from possible variations in livery.
Non-unit train operations may be referred to as wagonload trains.
Unit trains are typically used for the transportation of bulk goods. These can be solid substances such as:
Special Unit 2 is an American sci-fi/comedy television series, filmed in Vancouver, BC that aired on UPN for two seasons from April 2001 through February 2002. The show focused upon the exploits of a top-secret Chicago police division known as Special Unit 2, charged with policing the city's large population of mythological beings, known as "Links".
"Links" are the common monsters from folklore and mythology (except vampires, whose existence is specifically identified as preposterous), and are described as being the missing link between apes and humans (although other human-like species have evolved, for instance gargoyles, who are identified as humanoid descendants of dinosaurs). They live in hiding and/or disguise among the human population. On occasions when Links are seen by humans, they are usually dismissed as hallucinations or optical illusions, except by those who are especially perceptive. Special Unit 2 is the top-secret division of the Chicago police specifically designated to handle Link-related cases. Other units of the police department are specifically ordered to stay out of Special Unit 2's way, which provides a great deal of leeway and access for cases.
What is a "grain"? What exactly are shooters referring to when they talk about grains? Bullet weight? Amount of powder in the case? Weight of the oxygen in the gun barrel? Experienced shooters know all this, but a great number of people are a bit "cloudy" about all this, I believe. Another BASICS video, or an FAQ video gone wild! Orthogonal Devices ER-301 Custom Unit - Ultraviolet (Clouds Clone) As a challenge, I set out to make a Clouds "clone" custom unit on the Orthagonal Devices ER-301. It's not strictly or exactly a clone, but rather a Clouds-inspired custom unit that expands on the Manual Grains unit in the 301. It adds a few Clouds-inspired controls, as well as a few other twists. I ended up with 2 different versions for now (more on that later). It's heavy on the CPU (65%-75%) and there were two features I played with swapping out. There are two main Clouds features missing - one is the reverb and the other is the texture control that shapes the envelopes of the grains. This current version was built with and was only tested on firmware 0.2.18!! It may work with previous versions, as long as it has the hi...

For the first time in several years, a run-through unit train hit the rails of the ex-SP West Valley line on 6-11-17. After getting a service request from a local grain company, UP sent this full sized 80 car grain train to make the 40 mile trek from the interchange in Davis to the elevator in Artois. We followed it the entire way, getting several shots of it along the way. The most notable being it passing the historic Arbuckle depot, the oldest SP station still standing in California dating back to the 1880's. *Note* the route is owned by UP but on long term lease to the California Northern. Anyways, enjoy!
Vancouver bound CP Grain Unit Train. There is still a lot more grain to move before CP Rail gets all of last year's harvest to the shipping ports.
The rare triple camera view. I usually don’t go for this kind of shot, but for a solid foreign power train I make the exception! Power for the train is CN C44-9W #2699, ES44AC #2806, and DPU’s SD70M-2 #8929 & C44-9W #2622.
Pacific Western grain unit train 304 makes its way west across Peart Side Road returning empties for future loading. CN SD40-2 5273 is assisting with the journey.
CN 5735 at the head of a Grain Unit Train just west of Spences Bridge BC. Beautiful weather, gorgeous scenery and lots of trains that day. From observation it looks like CN is moving considerably more grain than CP.

The crew of the Westbound Grain Unit train called in the power trouble while still some distance east of Jasper. One of the two units lost 3 of its 6 traction motors. On arrival the units were uncoupled and moved ahead to a more convenient spot. The service people arrived, but couldn't rectify the problem. The defective unit was placed into an adjacent track. Meanwhile yet one more Eastbound had advanced to "Home", tied up and secured the train, the units advanced. Ahhhhhh .... at least one replacement unit for that urgent Grain Train. Anyway, this one is about the to and fro of engines to get the grain back on the way to Vancouver. 2013 was a bumper crop of grain on the prairies, the railways have been hard pressed to move it all - short of cars, power and crews. There have been bitter co...
In this video, you'll get a good idea of what Montana Rail Link's helper operations on Bozeman Pass are like. When I visited the MRL last October, traffic was heavy with grain, coal, and manifest freights. The first train I caught was a westbound grain train at the west portal of Bozeman Tunnel near West End, MT. The cast concrete tunnel portal that's currently in use marks the summit of Bozeman Pass and was built in 1945 by Northern Pacific to replace the original 1885 stone portal, which can still be seen from the hillside west of the 1945 portal and south of I-90. Note that several of the cars had spilled grain on top around the hatches. I headed back to Livingston and arrived in time to catch the three-unit manned helper set returning to the yard. The helpers are normally cut off at ...

I'm playing Blood, Grain, and Steel, a turn-based strategy game by David Walters Development. The campaign game takes place on a strategic map where you move armies around, with tactical battles when units invade enemy territory. The goal is to take the enemy fortress (the two sides (red and blue) are identical), capturing territories along the way that produce grain each turn. Grain is used to purchase units for the battles, and it can be transferred between a province and an army, a sort of innovative manual resupply system that works vey well. You pick your units before each battle, so you can alter your strategy every skirmish (you don't have to use three soldiers if you did last battle). The size of your army depends on the amount of grain you have in store (and unit use grain each tu...
This video of the SPSF Meadow Sub's operations shows "The Rocket," which is the unit grain train that runs with empty covered hoppers westbound from South Omaha to Meadow, then back with loaded covered hoppers. This train usually runs once a day, although it depends on the grain season. Motive power usually comes off the manifest train that runs between Omaha and Kansas City, which is a consist of two moderen 6-axle units. Today we have a common lashup of C44-9W 8707 and SD75I 8099. Both locomotives are equipped with SoundTraxx Tsunami DCC sound decoders. More on the SPSF Meadow Sub: http://www.spsfrailway.com https://www.facebook.com/spsfrailway/

We've seen the same service oriented architecture principles track advancements in technology from the coarse grain services of SOA a decade ago, through microservices that are usually scoped to a more fine grain single area of responsibility, and now functions as a service, serverless architectures where each function is a separately deployed and invoked unit. Large teams would work for months between releases of SOA components. Small teams down to a single developer would release microservices perhaps on a daily basis. One developer may release many functions many times a day. We'll look at the challenges and opportunities that arise as the components of applications get smaller, more ephemeral, and evolve more rapidly. The blog post mentioned at the beginning can be found at https://me...

On Monday afternoon 25/9/2017, SSR 49 class 4910 left Cootamundra, in southern NSW, with 9 grain wagons en-route to Benalla, Victoria. On the way stops were made in Junee to collect 3 more wagons, followed by Yerong Creek, where 13 more were added to the train for a total weight of 650 tons tonnes. Not a bad effort for a 1962 vintage branchline unit of a mere 875 HP! The video opens with scenes of 4910 moving from the SSR compound near Cootamundra railway station, to the main line and over to the grain sidings to pick up the initial 9 hoppers. We then chase the train south, with scenes near the top of Bethungra Spiral, between Illabo and Junee, arriving and shunting at Junee, near Harefield, crossing Wagga Wagga Viaduct, approaching The Rock, and finally making up the train in full at Yer...
