Maximilien Robespierre documentary: French Revolution of 1789 (The French Revolution Documentary)
This Maximillien Robespierre documentary, a great French documentary revolution for children, focuses on the French revolution facts, causes of French revolution and on its basic protagonists: Maximillien Robespierre, Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI
French Revolution was an influential social and political period upheaval in France (1789- 1799), and was partially carried forward by Napoleon during the later French Empire expansion. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy (Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette) , established a republic, experienced violent political turmoil periods, and culminated in a dictatorship by Napoleon that rapidly brought many of its principles to Western Europe and beyond. Inspired by liberal and radical ideas presented firstly by Robespierre, the Revolution profoundly altered the course of modern history, triggering the global decline of absolute monarchies while replacing them with republics. French Revolution is one of the most important events in human history.
The causes of the French Revolution are debated. Following the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War, French government was in debt and attempted to restore its financial status through unpopular taxation schemes. Years of bad harvests leading up to the Revolution also inflamed popular resentment of the privileges enjoyed by the clergy and the aristocracy. Demands for change were formulated in terms of Enlightenment ideals and contributed to the convocation of the Estates-General in May 1789. The first year of the Revolution saw members of the Third Estate taking control, the assault on the Bastille in July, the passage of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in August, and a women's march on Versailles that forced the royal court back to Paris in October. The Republic was proclaimed in September 1792 after the French victory at Valmy. In a momentous event that led to international condemnation, Louis XVI was executed in January 1793.
External threats closely shaped the course of the Revolution. The Revolutionary Wars beginning in 1792 ultimately featured French victories that facilitated the conquest of the Italian Peninsula, the Low Countries and most territories west of the Rhine – achievements that had eluded previous French governments for centuries. Internally, popular agitation radicalized the Revolution significantly, culminating in the rise of Maximilien Robespierre and the Jacobins. Maximillien Robespierre identified with the cause of the urban workers, the sans-culottes as they came to be known, and became their spokesman. It's for this reason that he dominated the Revolution in its most radical phase. This was the period of the Jacobin government, (June 1793 to Robespierre’s overthrow July 1794); the months when the common people became briefly the masters of the first French republic, which had been proclaimed in September 1792. It is also known as the Terror.
The dictatorship imposed by the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror, from 1793 until 1794, established price controls on food and other items, abolished slavery in French colonies abroad, dechristianized society through the creation of a new calendar and the expulsion of religious figures, and secured the borders of the new republic from its enemies. Large numbers of civilians were executed by revolutionary tribunals during the Terror, with estimates ranging from 16,000 to 40,000. After the Thermidorian Reaction, an executive council known as the Directory assumed control of the French state in 1795. The rule of the Directory was characterized by suspended elections, debt repudiations, financial instability, persecutions against the Catholic clergy, and significant military conquests abroad. Dogged by charges of corruption, the Directory collapsed in a coup led by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799. Napoleon, who became the hero of the Revolution through his popular military campaigns, went on to establish the Consulate and later the First Empire, setting the stage for wider global conflicts in the Napoleonic Wars.

Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre (IPA: [maksimiljɛ̃ fʁɑ̃swa maʁi izidɔʁ də ʁɔbɛspjɛʁ]; 6 May 1758 – 28 July 1794) was a French lawyer, politician, and one of the best-known and most influential figures of the French Revolution. As a member of the Estates-General, of the Constituent Assembly and of the Jacobin Club, he defended the abolition of slavery and of the death penalty, he supported equality of rights, universal suffrage and the establishment of a republic. He opposed war with Austria and the possibility of a coup by La Fayette. As a member of the Committee of Public Safety, he was instrumental in the period of the Revolution commonly known as the Reign of Terror, which ended a few months after his arrest and execution in July 1794.
Robespierre was influenced by 18th-century Enlightenment philosophes such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Montesquieu, and he was a capable articulator of the beliefs of the left-wing bourgeoisie. He was described as being physically unimposing yet immaculate in attire and personal manners. His supporters called him "The Incorruptible", while his adversaries called him dictateur sanguinaire (bloodthirsty dictator).

In early 1793, she demands a promise from the Duke that he vote to spare Louis's life; he does not, and Grace is furious. In April, he warns her of a search; she is arrested and brought before the committee. Orleans, too, is suspect. The guillotine awaits.

French Revolution was an influential social and political period upheaval in France (1789- 1799), and was partially carried forward by Napoleon during the later French Empire expansion. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy (Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette) , established a republic, experienced violent political turmoil periods, and culminated in a dictatorship by Napoleon that rapidly brought many of its principles to Western Europe and beyond. Inspired by liberal and radical ideas presented firstly by Robespierre, the Revolution profoundly altered the course of modern history, triggering the global decline of absolute monarchies while replacing them with republics. French Revolution is one of the most important events in human history.
The causes of the French Revolution are debated. Following the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War, French government was in debt and attempted to restore its financial status through unpopular taxation schemes. Years of bad harvests leading up to the Revolution also inflamed popular resentment of the privileges enjoyed by the clergy and the aristocracy. Demands for change were formulated in terms of Enlightenment ideals and contributed to the convocation of the Estates-General in May 1789. The first year of the Revolution saw members of the Third Estate taking control, the assault on the Bastille in July, the passage of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in August, and a women's march on Versailles that forced the royal court back to Paris in October. The Republic was proclaimed in September 1792 after the French victory at Valmy. In a momentous event that led to international condemnation, Louis XVI was executed in January 1793.
External threats closely shaped the course of the Revolution. The Revolutionary Wars beginning in 1792 ultimately featured French victories that facilitated the conquest of the Italian Peninsula, the Low Countries and most territories west of the Rhine – achievements that had eluded previous French governments for centuries. Internally, popular agitation radicalized the Revolution significantly, culminating in the rise of Maximilien Robespierre and the Jacobins. Maximillien Robespierre identified with the cause of the urban workers, the sans-culottes as they came to be known, and became their spokesman. It's for this reason that he dominated the Revolution in its most radical phase. This was the period of the Jacobin government, (June 1793 to Robespierre’s overthrow July 1794); the months when the common people became briefly the masters of the first French republic, which had been proclaimed in September 1792. It is also known as the Terror.
The dictatorship imposed by the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror, from 1793 until 1794, established price controls on food and other items, abolished slavery in French colonies abroad, dechristianized society through the creation of a new calendar and the expulsion of religious figures, and secured the borders of the new republic from its enemies. Large numbers of civilians were executed by revolutionary tribunals during the Terror, with estimates ranging from 16,000 to 40,000. After the Thermidorian Reaction, an executive council known as the Directory assumed control of the French state in 1795. The rule of the Directory was characterized by suspended elections, debt repudiations, financial instability, persecutions against the Catholic clergy, and significant military conquests abroad. Dogged by charges of corruption, the Directory collapsed in a coup led by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799. French Revolution was an influential social and political period upheaval in France (1789- 1799), and was partially carried forward by Napoleon during the later French Empire expansion. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy (Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette) , established a republic, experienced violent political turmoil periods, and culminated in a dictatorship by Napoleon that rapidly brought many of its principles to Western Europe and beyond. Inspired by liberal and radical ideas presented firstly by Robespierre, the Revolution profoundly altered the course of modern history, triggering the global decline of absolute monarchies while replacing them with republics. French Revolution is one of the most important events in human history.
The causes of the French Revolution are debated. Following the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War, French government was in debt and attempted to restore its financial status through unpopular taxation schemes. Years of bad harvests leading up to the Revolution also inflamed popular resentment of the privileges enjoyed by the clergy and the aristocracy. Demands for change were formulated in terms of Enlightenment ideals and contributed to the convocation of the Estates-General in May 1789. The first year of the Revolution saw members of the Third Estate taking control, the assault on the Bastille in July, the passage of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in August, and a women's march on Versailles that forced the royal court back to Paris in October. The Republic was proclaimed in September 1792 after the French victory at Valmy. In a momentous event that led to international condemnation, Louis XVI was executed in January 1793.
External threats closely shaped the course of the Revolution. The Revolutionary Wars beginning in 1792 ultimately featured French victories that facilitated the conquest of the Italian Peninsula, the Low Countries and most territories west of the Rhine – achievements that had eluded previous French governments for centuries. Internally, popular agitation radicalized the Revolution significantly, culminating in the rise of Maximilien Robespierre and the Jacobins. Maximillien Robespierre identified with the cause of the urban workers, the sans-culottes as they came to be known, and became their spokesman. It's for this reason that he dominated the Revolution in its most radical phase. This was the period of the Jacobin government, (June 1793 to Robespierre’s overthrow July 1794); the months when the common people became briefly the masters of the first French republic, which had been proclaimed in September 1792. It is also known as the Terror.
The dictatorship imposed by the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror, from 1793 until 1794, established price controls on food and other items, abolished slavery in French colonies abroad, dechristianized society through the creation of a new calendar and the expulsion of religious figures, and secured the borders of the new republic from its enemies. Large numbers of civilians were executed by revolutionary tribunals during the Terror, with estimates ranging from 16,000 to 40,000. After the Thermidorian Reaction, an executive council known as the Directory assumed control of the French state in 1795. The rule of the Directory was characterized by suspended elections, debt repudiations, financial instability, persecutions against the Catholic clergy, and significant military conquests abroad. Dogged by charges of corruption, the Directory collapsed in a coup led by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799. Napoleon, who became the hero of the Revolution through his popular military campaigns, went on to establish the Consulate and later the First Empire, setting the stage for wider global conflicts in the Napoleonic Wars.

Maximilien de Robespierre est l'une des principales figures de la Révolution française et demeure aussi l'un des personnages les plus controversés de cette période.
Élu député du Tiers état aux États généraux de 1789, il devient bientôt l'une des principales figures des « démocrates » à l'Assemblée constituante, défendant l'abolition de l'esclavage et de la peine de mort, le droit de vote des gens de couleur, des juifs ou des comédiens, ainsi que le suffrage universel et l'égalité des droits, contre le marc d'argent. Il décide aussi de réglementer sévèrement la Bourse. Son intransigeance lui vaut bientôt d'être surnommé « l'Incorruptible ». Membre du club des Jacobins dès ses origines, il en est le plus illustre membre et l'une des figures de proue. Après la scission des Feuillants, il contribue à sa réorganisation et lui permet grandement de conserver le soutien de la plupart des sociétés affiliées de province.
Opposé à la guerre contre l'Autriche en 1792, il s'oppose à La Fayette et soutient la chute de la royauté. Membre de la commune insurrectionnelle de Paris, il est élu à la Convention nationale, où il siège sur les bancs de la Montagne et s'oppose à la Gironde. Après les journées du 31 mai et du 2 juin 1793, il entre le 27 juillet 1793 au Comité de salut public, où il participe à l'instauration d'un gouvernement révolutionnaire et de la Terreur, dans un contexte de guerre extérieure contre les monarchies coalisées et de guerre civile (insurrections fédéralistes, guerre de Vendée…).
À la suite de la victoire des comités contre les factions au printemps 1794, il contribue à faire cesser la politique de déchristianisation et fait voter, en qualité de rapporteur, le décret du 18 floréal an II, par lequel « le peuple français reconnaît l’existence de l’être suprême, et l’immortalité de l’âme », et la loi de Prairial, dite de « Grande Terreur ».
Attaqué et isolé au sein de la Convention par d'anciens dantonistes et des envoyés en mission rappelés, mais aussi au sein du gouvernement révolutionnaire par le Comité de sûreté générale et des collègues du Comité de salut public, il prend la Convention à témoin de ces dissensions le 8 thermidor an II, mais ne parvient pas à imposer ses vues. Le lendemain, empêché de parler par ses ennemis, alliés pour la circonstance aux modérés de la Plaine, il est arrêté avec son frère Augustin et ses amis Couthon, Saint-Just et Le Bas. La Commune entre alors en insurrection et le fait libérer, mais il perd du temps, et la Convention le met hors la loi.
Dans la nuit, une colonne armée s'empare de l'hôtel de ville, où il se trouve avec ses partisans, et il est blessé à la mâchoire dans des circonstances incertaines. Après vérification de son identité devant le Tribunal révolutionnaire, il est guillotiné dans l'après-midi du 10 thermidor avec vingt et un de ses partisans. Sa mort entraîne, dans les mois qui suivent, une « réaction thermidorienne », qui voit le démantèlement du gouvernement révolutionnaire et de la Terreur.
Robespierre est sans doute le personnage le plus controversé de la Révolution française. Ses détracteurs (les Thermidoriens, les fondateurs de la IIIe République et les partisans de l'historiographie anticommuniste dont le chef de file fut François Furet) soulignent son rôle dans l'instauration de la Terreur et la nature autoritaire du Comité de salut public. Pour d'autres, Robespierre tenta de limiter les excès de la Terreur, et fut avant tout un défenseur de la paix, un champion de la démocratie directe et de la justice sociale, un porte-parole des pauvres, et l'un des acteurs de la première abolition de l'esclavage en France. Ces historiens font remarquer que la chute de Robespierre, le 9 Thermidor, coïncide avec l'arrêt des mesures sociales qu'il avait prises en faveur des pauvres (la loi du maximum général par exemple, qui contrôlait le prix du pain et du grain), et le triomphe du libéralisme économique. En accord avec cette historiographie, on trouve notamment Albert Mathiez ou Henri Guillemin.

Sa mort entraîne, dans les mois qui suivent, une « réaction thermidorienne », qui voit le démantèlement du gouvernement révolutionnaire et de la Terreur.
Robespierre est sans doute le personnage le plus controversé de la Révolution française. Ses détracteurs (les Thermidoriens, les fondateurs de la IIIe République et les partisans de l'historiographie anticommuniste dont le chef de file fut François Furet) soulignent son rôle dans l'instauration de la Terreur et la nature autoritaire du Comité de salut public. Pour d'autres, Robespierre tenta de limiter les excès de la Terreur, et fut avant tout un défenseur de la paix, un champion de la démocratie directe et de la justice sociale, un porte-parole des pauvres, et l'un des acteurs de la première abolition de l'esclavage en France. Ces historiens font remarquer que la chute de Robespierre, le 9 Thermidor, coïncide avec l'arrêt des mesures sociales qu'il avait prises en faveur des pauvres (la loi du maximum général par exemple, qui contrôlait le prix du pain et du grain), et le triomphe du libéralisme économique. En accord avec cette historiographie, on trouve notamment Albert Mathiez ou Henri Guillemin.
