reluctant stereotypes and cockatoo haircuts

There is very little information on the web about this early-eighties band. The only apparent thing is that it’s the predecessor of the British new wave pop band „King“. It’s very probable that King became quite popular (two UK Top 10 albums) because of the singer Paul King himself sporting the cockatoo haircut.

cockatoo

Well, to be honest, I haven‘t listened to any of King’s songs. The haircut is more than I wanted to know about that period of Paul Kings life.
Reluctant Stereotypes put out „The Rounds“ as the B-side of their „The Lull“ 7inch on Oval Records [Oval 1013] in 1979. It’s supposedly very different from their later ska tendencies.

Reluctant Stereotypes – The Rounds

I also can‘t help but noticing that we are developing a subtle theme on the blog. Just look at the cover of the 7inch. The man is obviously stopping the bus since he is about to receive a dangerous version of road head. Maybe he also desires some spectators.

Thanks for the info from Audrey Scheres‘ website
The song can also be found on Atomic Shockwaves Vol.2 [diy]

„For that much man-on-man power, you had to step over into the German industrial theme, the most manly music of all time,“ he says. (via)

Lyrics:

HIGH PRESSURE DAYS

Saw Johnny tonight, but we didn‘t say hello to eachother
Were all moving pretty fast these days
bumping around like bumper cars
Slippery kelp in the tide
It’s awful hard to hang on to eachother
Flying around hot H2O molecules
Balls that come in contact often alter their direction

High pressure days, high pressure
high pressure days, high pressure!

Our paths still cross in these high pressure days,
Acrowd pattern will emerge
Exchange phone numbers, wither away

High pressure days, finding that our motions
High pressure nights, fit into a pattern
