Eric Bischoff (

"Hall & Nash really contributed the key elements of nWo's feel & attitude. I'd like to take most of the credit but that would be a lie. Hall & Nash had more to do with the attitude & tone of what nWo represented than anybody.
Scott was one of the most talented, creative people
I've ever known in the wrestling business. When his head was on straight, he was an extremely creative guy. The problem as we all know was that Scott had demons that he couldn't overcome. But for a year & a half after the launch of nWo, Scott came up with a lot of great ideas &
Kevin fed off his energy. Kevin & I both grew up in
Detroit, at about the same time & in neighbourhoods that were close to each other. We had the same Detroit street mentality & a lot of what nWo did was consistent with the way we grew up. So when Kevin brought something up, I related to it right away. Spray-painting/tagging opponents, for example; the attraction of being an outlaw, that sort of thing."

"
Working for WCW was a lot of fun. Hall & Nash made it so much fun it was DANGEROUS. When Hall & Nash showed up in
1996, you could tell right away they were DIFFERENT. Not bad different, not good different. Just DIFFERENT. They loved wrestling (particularly Hall) but saw both sides of it (particularly Nash). They saw themselves as being a bit above WCW. They came from THE
BIG SHOW. That attitude didn't necessarily endear them backstage but it definitely contributed to the success of the nWo invasion.
The nWo's early days got mostly booked by Hall & Nash. They came in strong & got over strong.
The Outsiders held the whole company off with baseball bats. They were EVERYWHERE. Nitro was THEIR SHOW.
Marks believed the impossible: That WCW & WWF were AT
WAR. Hall & Nash sold that impeccably. It didn't take long to realize this was SOMETHING
SPECIAL. An angle like this can't have a bad start. Hall's "You want a war?" promo nailed it. Hall is one of wrestling's most underrated performers because of his personal problems. But his contributions to the nWo angle were MONSTROUS. Hall & Nash knew, right away, where this should go. Then got it there. When Hall & Nash had control, the nWo angle SIZZLED. No missteps. No gaps in logic. No compromise. They took it ALL THE WAY. Then
Hulk Hogan got involved
...
Hogan turned on WCW & founded the nWo at BATB 96. Hogan had no choice. His career was at a crossroads. His star had undeniably faded. Hogan's worth to WCW was always mostly about notoriety. Hogan took so much, the tangible gains were few. His
PPV take was onerous. Like Nash says on
WWE's nWo
DVD, he & Hall made the invasion
REAL. Hogan joined & started cutting fake wrestling-style filibuster promos that were straight out of
Memphis. Hogan diluted the nWo's cool factor. HE'S NOT COOL. Hogan turned the nWo into fake wrestling. Worse, he made the angle his. It didn't belong to Hall & Nash anymore, the cool guys who said & did cool things.
It was a paradox: Hogan had a
HUGE NAME. No one represented WWF more. He gave the nWo credibility.
Star power. But he wasn't cool & he big-footed the angle terribly. What to do? You can't say Hogan in the nWo didn't work. But...Bischoff gave Hogan too much credit for the angle's success & there was no shortage of Hogan ass-kissers to rubber-stamp that notion. The minute Hogan's turn clicked, his power returned & multiplied. Hogan not only owned the nWo angle, he owned WCW. Had creative control over everyone & everything.
