The music was composed by Milton Ager and the lyrics came from Jack Yellen. The song appeared in the film "King Of Jazz" (1930) with the Paul Whiteman orchestra. There´s also a incredible dancing scene with Al "Rubber Legs" Norman.

Jack Yellen
Jack Selig Yellen (Jacek Jeleń; July 6, 1892 – April 17, 1991) was an American lyricist and screenwriter. He is best remembered for writing the lyrics to the songs "Happy Days Are Here Again", which was used by Franklin Roosevelt as the theme song for his successful 1932 presidential campaign, and "Ain't She Sweet", a Tin Pan Alley standard.
Early life and education
Born in Poland, Yellen emigrated with his family to the United States when he was five years old. The oldest of seven children, he was raised in Buffalo, New York and began writing songs in high school. He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan in 1913 where he was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity. After graduating he became a reporter for the Buffalo Courier, continuing to write songs on the side.
Career
Yellen's first collaborator on a song was George L. Cobb, with whom he wrote a number of Dixie songs including "Alabama Jubilee", "Are You From Dixie?", and "All Aboard for Dixieland". He is best remembered for his collaboration with composer Milton Ager. He and Ager entered the music publishing business as part owners of the Ager-Yellen-Bernstein Music Company. Yellen also worked with many other composers such as Sammy Fain and Harold Arlen.

"Sugar" by Maceo Pinkard, Edna Alexander and Sidney D. Mitchell, performed Tuesday, December 4th by Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks at Sofia's Downstairs in Time Square. This was one of two songs published in 1927 entitled "Sugar" - Jack Yellen, Milton Ager, Loring 'Red' Nichols and Frank Crum wrote the other one. Both great tunes.

Smith was also a Tin Pan Alley "song plugger," giving private performances of new songs to vocalists who might want to adopt those songs (the way he entered show business after he left the military?). He was a song plugger for the Irving Berlin Music Company, and he recorded several Berlin songs--he was in his "comfort zone."

Nathaniel Shilkret, born on December 25, 1889, shaped the musical sound of the Victor Talking Machine Company in the 1920s perhaps more than any other musician, and he was important in the early years of RCA Victor, formed in 1929.
This classically trained clarinetist served as bandleader, composer, piano accompanist, and musical director for countless popular Victor discs as well as many Red Seal discs.
From the mid-1920s onward his name was often on labels, but much of his work conducting Victor's "house" orchestras went without credit. He was most influential in Victor's early electric era of recording but had recorded prolifically in the acoustic era. He was successful at giving popular tunes of the day a semi-classical treatment, tunes being sometimes arranged for a small ensemble of instruments, other times for a symphonic orchestra.
Several reference books erroneously cite 1895 as Nat's year of birth. He was born in Queens, New York as Naftule Schuldkraut on December 25, 1889, according to his birth certificate. Researcher Bob Arnold also located the birth certificate of Jack Shilkret, who was born on October 9, 1896, and the family name on Jack's birth certificate is given as Skilkrout, which means the name had already changed in the six years since Nat's birth.
During an interview in Nat Shilkret's home in Massapequa, New York, on October 7, 1963, he told Brian Rust, "My folks came from Austria...I'm another famous Jew born on Christmas Day." They probably came from Galicia, at that time in Austria but in present-day Poland.
Beginning in 1926, Shilkret wrote a series of autobiographical pieces for Phonograph Monthly Review, and he states in the February 1927 issue that he began to study music with lessons by his father on the clarinet.
Page 72 of the September 1927 issue of Talking Machine World states, "At the age of twenty-four, because of his ability, amounting to genius, as an arranger and musician, he was made a conductor in the company. In addition to this, he is also manager and musical director of the foreign language department, where records in thirty-five different languages are made. Publications sent in for examination are left to the judgment of Mr. Shilkret and many of these selections are arranged by him...Very often he is accompanist for many famous artists who made Red Seal records."
Ensembles that Shilkret conducted in the 1920s, relying on a more or less stable pool of Victor studio musicians, include the Victor Salon Orchestra, International Novelty Orchestra, International Concert Orchestra, Victor Concert Orchestra, Victor Symphony Orchestra, International Symphony Orchestra, Victor Schrammel (Viennese) Orchestra, Shilkret's Rhyth-Melodists, the Troubadours (this was also led at times by Hugo Frey), the All Star Orchestra, the Eveready Radio Group, and the Hilo Hawaiian Orchestra. He was often assisted by Leonard Joy. Many records in the late 1920s were issued under the name Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra.
In 1924 Shilkret formed the Victor Salon Orchestra.

Shilkret's increasing importance to Victor may have contributed to Paul Whiteman's decision to leave Victor in 1928 for Columbia though Whiteman's greatest incentive to switch companies was undoubtedly the astonishing sum of money Columbia offered.
In 1932 he conducted a Victor orchestra during sessions that re-recorded the voice of Enrico Caruso, who had died too soon to be recorded by the electrical process.
As an arranger and composer, Shilkret was important to Victor. He was musical arranger for the wildly popular "The Prisoner's Song," cut by Vernon Dalhart on July 13, 1924 (Victor 19427). Believing he deserved composer credit for it, Shilkret late in life referred to Dalhart as a man who stole a song from him.
He arranged and conducted music for a couple dozen films.
Shilkret died on February 18, 1982, in Franklin Square, Long Island, New York.

Nathaniel Shilkret, born on December 25, 1889, shaped the musical sound of the Victor Talking Machine Company in the 1920s perhaps more than any other musician, and he was important in the early years of RCA Victor, formed in 1929.
This classically trained clarinetist served as bandleader, composer, piano accompanist, and musical director for countless popular Victor discs as well as many Red Seal discs.
From the mid-1920s onward his name was often on labels, but much of his work conducting Victor's "house" orchestras went without credit. He was most influential in Victor's early electric era of recording but had recorded prolifically in the acoustic era. He was successful at giving popular tunes of the day a semi-classical treatment, tunes being sometimes arranged for a small ensemble of instruments, other times for a symphonic orchestra.
Several reference books erroneously cite 1895 as Nat's year of birth. He was born in Queens, New York as Naftule Schuldkraut on December 25, 1889, according to his birth certificate. Researcher Bob Arnold also located the birth certificate of Jack Shilkret, who was born on October 9, 1896, and the family name on Jack's birth certificate is given as Skilkrout, which means the name had already changed in the six years since Nat's birth.
During an interview in Nat Shilkret's home in Massapequa, New York, on October 7, 1963, he told Brian Rust, "My folks came from Austria...I'm another famous Jew born on Christmas Day." They probably came from Galicia, at that time in Austria but in present-day Poland.
Beginning in 1926, Shilkret wrote a series of autobiographical pieces for Phonograph Monthly Review, and he states in the February 1927 issue that he began to study music with lessons by his father on the clarinet.
Page 72 of the September 1927 issue of Talking Machine World states, "At the age of twenty-four, because of his ability, amounting to genius, as an arranger and musician, he was made a conductor in the company. In addition to this, he is also manager and musical director of the foreign language department, where records in thirty-five different languages are made. Publications sent in for examination are left to the judgment of Mr. Shilkret and many of these selections are arranged by him...Very often he is accompanist for many famous artists who made Red Seal records."
Ensembles that Shilkret conducted in the 1920s, relying on a more or less stable pool of Victor studio musicians, include the Victor Salon Orchestra, International Novelty Orchestra, International Concert Orchestra, Victor Concert Orchestra, Victor Symphony Orchestra, International Symphony Orchestra, Victor Schrammel (Viennese) Orchestra, Shilkret's Rhyth-Melodists, the Troubadours (this was also led at times by Hugo Frey), the All Star Orchestra, the Eveready Radio Group, and the Hilo Hawaiian Orchestra. He was often assisted by Leonard Joy. Many records in the late 1920s were issued under the name Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra.
In 1924 Shilkret formed the Victor Salon Orchestra.

Diver Down is the fifth studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1982. It spent 65 weeks on the album chart in the United States and had, by 1998, sold four million copies in the US.
he album cover artwork displays the "diver down" flag used in many US jurisdictions (which indicates a SCUBA diver is currently submerged in the area).[1] Asked about the cover in a 1982 interview with Sylvie Simmons (Sounds, June 23, 1982), David Lee Roth said it was meant to imply that "there was something going on that's not apparent to your eyes. You put up the red flag with the white slash. Well, a lot of people approach Van Halen as sort of the abyss. It means, it's not immediately apparent to your eyes what is going on underneath the surface." The back cover of the album features a photo by Richard Aaron of Van Halen on stage at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida that was taken on October 24, 1981 as they concluded a set opening for The Rolling Stones.
Five of the twelve songs on the album are covers, the most popular being the cover of "(Oh) Pretty Woman", a Roy Orbison song. At the time, the record company thought it had a greater chance of a hit record if the album comprised songs that were already successful. In retrospect, it turned out to be one of the Van Halen brothers' least-favorite albums, with Eddie stating "I'd rather have a bomb with one of my own songs than a hit with someone else's." However, at the time while he admitted to the pressure the band was put under to record it, he was able to tell Guitar Player (Dec. 1982) that it "was fun": "When we came off the Fair Warning tour last year [1981], we were going to take a break and spend a lot of time writing this and that. Dave came up with the idea of, 'Hey, why don't we start off the new year with just putting out a single?' He wanted to do 'Dancing in the Streets.' He gave me the original Martha Reeves & the Vandellas tape, and I listened to it and said, 'I can't get a handle on anything out of this song.' I couldn't figure out a riff, and you know the way I like to play: I always like to do a riff, as opposed to just hitting barre chords and strumming. So I said, 'Look, if you want to do a cover tune, why don't we do 'Pretty Woman'? It took one day. We went to Sunset Sound in L.A., recorded it, and it came out right after the first of the year. It started climbing the charts, so all of a sudden Warner Bros. is going, 'You got a hit single on your hands. We gotta have that record.' We said, 'Wait a minute, we just did that to keep us out there, so that people know we're still alive.' But they just kept pressuring, so we jumped right back in without any rest or time to recuperate from the tour, and started recording. We spent 12 days making the album... it was a lot of fun." In addition to this, two of the original songs were around long before the album was made. "Hang 'Em High" can trace its roots back to the band's 1977 demos as "Last Night", which had the same music but different lyrics. "Cathedral" was also nothing new, being played in its current form throughout 1981 with earlier versions going back to 1980. Additionally, "Happy Trails" had been recorded for their 1977 demos as a joke.

I enjoy the recordings of Whispering Jack Smith--the haunting quality of his voice in sentimental tunes, the humor he conveys in comic songs, his choice of material during a Golden Age of songwriting, the tasteful accompaniments to his voice (he often provides his own piano accompaniment, and his playing is deft).
The crooner's first discs were marketed in late 1925, "The Whispering Baritone" enjoying popularity from that time until 1929 or so. His records sold well for four years, but sales declined dramatically with the Depression's onset.
Born with the name Jacob Schmidt, the singer made a legal change to Jack Smith.
Brian Rust cites 1899 as a year of birth, but Thomas A. DeLong's well-researched book titled Radio Stars cites a more precise and likely date: May 30, 1896.
With the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, Smith was a victim of a gas attack at the battle of Saint-Mihiel, or so it has been claimed--a book by Brian Rust says it, so people repeat it, but no primary source is cited. Can someone find a Jack Smith interview in which he says this?
Some record collectors today make the tiresome claim that the whispering quality of Smith's crooning is a result of this gas attack, but I view the softness and half-talking as Smith's singing style--and he chose this style, making innovative use of new microphone technology. Smith sings in a regular way on plenty of records, no "whispering" at all.
Smith was forced to croon as a result of a gas attack? That sounds like a show-biz myth (promoted by Smith himself?). Blaming Germans makes for good publicity. I view softness and half-talking as Smith's singing style though, as I said, he sings in a full voice on many records, and his voice also filled theaters.
Only on a few discs does he actually whisper, such as on "Playground in the Sky." On many records he uses a half-talking, half-singing approach, but this is not whispering.
His discs were among the earliest made with an "electric" recording process, a microphone used. His first recording session was on August 28, 1925, but Victor issued nothing from this "test" date or trial session. "Cecilia" was soon afterwards cut and was the "A" side of his first disc. It was among his biggest hits. Recorded on September 21, 1925, it was among his biggest hits.
Jack Smith was exclusive to the Victor Talking Machine Company (and England's HMV) from 1925 to 1930. Hal Kemp's older brother, T. D. Kemp, Jr., became Jack Smith's business manager in 1926, arranging for Smith to perform in London that year and later.
Smith made wonderful recordings abroad in 1928--in England and in Berlin, Germany.
Kemp in retirement recalled that Smith's alcoholism destroyed the crooner's career by 1931. One sign of a decline in the career is that by 1931 Smith cut titles for Plaza, a company that issued budget labels. Jack Smith had fallen from the prestigious Victor label, ending up on the dime-store Banner label. He recorded for Decca in 1940 in a failed comeback attempt.
He died in New York City on May 13, 1950, out of the limelight for two decades though he continued to work in radio, even hosting a radio show in the mid-1930s. He continued to play in nightclubs (or roadside restaurants, such as the Woodlawn in Madison, Connecticut), not presented as any kind of star or legend--he sang and played piano to audiences indifferent to or unaware of his earlier fame.
Obituaries published in 1950 state that Smith, survived by a wife named Marie, is buried next to his mother Anna Schmidt at St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx in an unmarked grave.
His heyday was the mid- and late-1920s. Among the symbols and icons of the Roaring '20s--radio, flappers, Al Jolson in The Jazz Singer, bootleggers, Gatsby, Lindbergh--I like to include The Whispering Baritone.
