Bhutan celebrated the 60th birthday of Gyalpo 4, the father of the present King in a grand manner on the 11th of November. A series of celebrations is being planned for the whole year. A book that is a collection of articles by various important people who had known the King with the title “The Bodhisattva King” by Tshering Tashi and Thierry Mathou is soon to be released.

One may wonder why Bhutan is moving forward and consolidating its democratic credentials, while Maldives which introduced a democratic constitution at the same time is failing and in fact sliding backwards towards a full scale dictatorship?

It should be conceded that Bhutan as a young democracy is still on a learning curve and mistakes do happen. There will be teething problems. Except for the entrenched bureaucrats all the rest involved in the administration directly and indirectly like the politicians, parliamentarians, ministers and the National Council members could make mistakes and these should be taken in the stride.

Ten Sri Lankan Tamils, including two women and five children, from Sri Lanka who landed Aricha Munai off the Dhanushkodi coast (Tamil Nadu) on May 5 2014, have been arrested by police for entering the country without passports.

While attending the BIMSTEC Conference in Myanmar, Prime Minister Koirala took the opportunity to speak to his Bhutanese counterpart on the still "unresolved" issue of the Bhutanese refugees in Nepal.
This happened when both leaders were participating in the Third Summit of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical ad Economic Cooperation.
