The Jonestown Massacre: Paradise Lost (Cult Documentary)

Jonestown massacre is the mass murder-suicide that occurred in Jonestown, Guyana by the people’s temple cult.
On November 18, 1978, the mass murder-suicide of members of people’s temple cult was carried out as a result of instructions given by the church leader Jim Jones. He had earlier hinted in one of his preaching that he loved socialism and was willing to die for it, taking thousands along with him. Not until that fateful day on November 18, 1978, did he act on his preaching. Jones had earlier moved his members to the compound where he leased lands from the Guyanese government. He kept most of the member’s hostage against their will and maltreated them. Subsequent events would lead later led to the massacre of November 18, 1978.
The total number of deaths was recorded to be around 918 people, with the majority of the dead being children. Most who were under the age of 17
Jonestown massacre was one of the most extensive deaths in the history of
America.

"On Nov. 18, 1978 — willingly or unwillingly — the followers of the charismatic Pentecostal leader Jim Jones drank cyanide-laced fruit punch. Over 300 children were made to drink it, and syringes full of the mixture were emptied into infants’ mouths. Those who didn’t join Jones’ so-called “revolutionary suicide” were injected with poison; others tried to run for the surrounding jungle only to be shot by one of Jones’ armed guards. An audio recording made on November 18, 1978, at the Peoples Temple compound in Jonestown, Guyana immediately preceding and during the mass suicide and murder of over 900 members of the cult.
Original Notes:
I acquired the source cassette tape from a schoolmate c. 1979 whose father was an FBI agent
The sound levels were increased as close as possible to clipping when I mastered to CD-R from cassette and then normalized to -18dB average RMS power (loudness) in Sound Forge
An interesting website for further research is the Jonestown Institute which contains transcripts as well as commentary on this and other recordings recovered by the FBI from Jonestown after the mass suicide and murders.

Jonestown
"Jonestown" was the informal name for the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project formed by the Peoples Temple, an American religious organization under the leadership of Jim Jones, in northwestern Guyana. It became internationally notorious when on November 18, 1978, over 900 people died in the remote commune, at the nearby airstrip in Port Kaituma, and in Georgetown, Guyana's capital city. The name of the settlement became synonymous with the incidents at those locations.
A total of 909 Americans died in Jonestown, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in an event termed "revolutionary suicide" by Jones and some members on an audio tape of the event and in prior discussions. The poisonings in Jonestown followed the murder of five others by Temple members at Port Kaituma, including United States Congressman Leo Ryan. Four other Temple members died in Georgetown at Jones' command.
To a certain extent, the actions in Jonestown were viewed as a mass suicide; some sources, including Jonestown survivors, regard the event as a mass murder. It was the largest such event in modern history and resulted in the largest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act until September 11, 2001. In recent years, the Jonestown massacre has been the subject of several conspiracy theories.

Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple, is a 2006 documentary film made by Firelight Media, produced and directed by Stanley Nelson. The documentary reveals new footage of the incidents surrounding the Peoples Temple and its leader Jim Jones who led over 900 members of his religious group to a settlement in Guyana called Jonestown, where he orchestrated a mass suicide with poisoned Flavor Aid, in 1978. It is in the form of a narrative with interviews with former Temple members, Jonestown survivors, and persons who knew Jones
Release
The film premiered at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival where it received the Outstanding Achievement in Documentary award, and was broadcast nationally on Monday, April 9, 2007, on PBS's documentary program "American Experience". The DVD release contains a number of scenes and interviews not in the on-air program.

The Jonestown Death Tape An audio recording made on November 18, 1978, at the Peoples Temple compound in Jonestown, Guyana immediately preceding and during the mass suicide and murder of over 900 members of the cult. Original Notes: I acquired the source cassette tape from a schoolmate c. 1979 whose father was an FBI agent The sound levels were increased as close as possible to clipping when I mastered to CD-R from cassette and then normalized to -18dB average RMS power (loudness) in Sound Forge An interesting website for further research is the Jonestown Institute which contains transcripts as well as commentary on this and other recordings recovered by the FBI from Jonestown after the mass suicide and murders.

Jonestown massacre is the mass murder-suicide that occurred in Jonestown, Guyana by the people’s temple cult.
On November 18, 1978, the mass murder-suicide of members of people’s temple cult was carried out as a result of instructions given by the church leader Jim Jones. He had earlier hinted in one of his preaching that he loved socialism and was willing to die for it, taking thousands along with him. Not until that fateful day on November 18, 1978, did he act on his preaching. Jones had earlier moved his members to the compound where he leased lands from the Guyanese government. He kept most of the member’s hostage against their will and maltreated them. Subsequent events would lead later led to the massacre of November 18, 1978.
The total number of deaths was recorded to be around 918 people, with the majority of the dead being children. Most who were under the age of 17
Jonestown massacre was one of the most extensive deaths in the history of
America.

"On Nov. 18, 1978 — willingly or unwillingly — the followers of the charismatic Pentecostal leader Jim Jones drank cyanide-laced fruit punch. Over 300 children were made to drink it, and syringes full of the mixture were emptied into infants’ mouths. Those who didn’t join Jones’ so-called “revolutionary suicide” were injected with poison; others tried to run for the surrounding jungle only to be shot by one of Jones’ armed guards. I acquired the source cassette tape from a schoolmate c. 1979 whose father was an FBI agent
The sound levels were increased as close as possible to clipping when I mastered to CD-R from cassette and then normalized to -18dB average RMS power (loudness) in Sound Forge
An interesting website for further research is the Jonestown Institute which contains transcripts as well as commentary on this and other recordings recovered by the FBI from Jonestown after the mass suicide and murders.

Jonestown massacre is the mass murder-suicide that occurred in Jonestown, Guyana by the people’s temple cult.
On November 18, 1978, the mass murder-suicide of members of people’s temple cult was carried out as a result of instructions given by the church leader Jim Jones. He had earlier hinted in one of his preaching that he loved socialism and was willing to die for it, taking thousands along with him. Not until that fateful day on November 18, 1978, did he act on his preaching. Jones had earlier moved his members to the compound where he leased lands from the Guyanese government. He kept most of the member’s hostage against their will and maltreated them. Subsequent events would lead later led to the massacre of November 18, 1978.
The total number of deaths was recorded to be around 918 people, with the majority of the dead being children. Most who were under the age of 17
Jonestown massacre was one of the most extensive deaths in the history of
America.

"On Nov. 18, 1978 — willingly or unwillingly — the followers of the charismatic Pentecostal leader Jim Jones drank cyanide-laced fruit punch. Over 300 children were made to drink it, and syringes full of the mixture were emptied into infants’ mouths. Those who didn’t join Jones’ so-called “revolutionary suicide” were injected with poison; others tried to run for the surrounding jungle only to be shot by one of Jones’ armed guards. Jonestown
"Jonestown" was the informal name for the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project formed by the Peoples Temple, an American religious organization under the leadership of Jim Jones, in northwestern Guyana. It became internationally notorious when on November 18, 1978, over 900 people died in the remote commune, at the nearby airstrip in Port Kaituma, and in Georgetown, Guyana's capital city. The name of the settlement became synonymous with the incidents at those locations.
A total of 909 Americans died in Jonestown, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in an event termed "revolutionary suicide" by Jones and some members on an audio tape of the event and in prior discussions. The poisonings in Jonestown followed the murder of five others by Temple members at Port Kaituma, including United States Congressman Leo Ryan. Four other Temple members died in Georgetown at Jones' command.
To a certain extent, the actions in Jonestown were viewed as a mass suicide; some sources, including Jonestown survivors, regard the event as a mass murder. It was the largest such event in modern history and resulted in the largest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act until September 11, 2001. In recent years, the Jonestown massacre has been the subject of several conspiracy theories.
