Nana (1926 film)

Nana (1926) is Jean Renoir's second full-length silent film and is based on the novel by Émile Zola.

Plot

A government official, Count Muffat, falls under the spell of Nana, a young actress. She becomes his mistress, living in the sumptuous apartment which he provides for her. Instead of elevating herself to Muffat's level, however, Nana drags the poor man down to hers - in the end, both lives have been utterly destroyed.

Production

The film stars Renoir’s wife, Catherine Hessling, in an eccentric performance as the flawed heroine Nana.

Jean Renoir’s film is a fairly faithful adaptation of Émile Zola’s classic novel. The film’s extravagances include two magnificent set pieces – a horse race and an open air ball. The film never made a profit, and the commercial failure of the film robbed Renoir of the opportunity to make such an ambitious film again for several years.

Nana (echos)

Phthora nana (Medieval Greek φθορά νανὰ) is one of the ten modes of the Hagiopolitan Octoechos consisting of 8 diatonic echoi and two additional phthorai. It is used in different traditions of Orthodox chant until today (→ Neobyzantine Octoechos). The name "nana" is taken from the syllables (written in ligatures "ʅʅ") sung during the intonation which precedes a melody composed in this mode. The name "phthora" derived from the verb φθείρω and means "destroy" or "corrupt". It was usually referred to the diatonic genus of the eight mode system and as a sign used in Byzantine chant notation it indicated a "change to another genus" (μεταβολὴ κατὰ γένος), in the particular case of phthora nana a change to the enharmonic genus. Today the "nana" intonation has become the standard name of the third authentic mode which is called "echos tritos" (ἦχος τρίτος) in Greek and "third glas" (третий Гласъ) in Old Church Slavonic.

Hybrid Theory (EP)

Hybrid Theory is the first EP by Hybrid Theory, a previous name of the band Linkin Park. The album was recorded and self-released in May 1, 1999 through Mix Media. Later that year, the band changed its name to Linkin Park and Hybrid Theory was re-mixed and remastered for another limited release in 2001 (with minor changes) in the credits and artwork for members of Linkin Park's fan club. Only about 1,000 copies were pressed and released. Original versions of the EP are hard to find.

Background

The financing for the original pressing was obtained through a publishing deal with Zomba Music Publishing after one of its representatives, Jeff Blue, heard the band playing at the Whisky a Go Go. Initial sales were merely a handful but the band persisted. They began plugging the album in chat rooms and sending free copies to anyone who expressed interest. An informal 'street team' developed from the on-line community to spread the music. With Dave Farrell's temporary departure from the band to perform with Tasty Snax, Kyle Christener took over the bass position. However, he did not stay for long and did not take part in the band's debut album.

Technique (band)

Technique was an alternative synth pop band from the mid-1990s featuring Kate Holmes of Frazier Chorus and singer Xan Tyler. The band was named after New Order's 1989 album of the same name, and they were signed to Creation Records, the record label owned by Holmes's husband - Alan McGee.

Holmes and Tyler met at Butterfly, the studio owned by legendary producer and former Killing Joke member Youth, where Tyler was working as a session backing vocalist. They began work on their debut album, with synthpop veteran Stephen Hague and Oasis producer Owen Morris handling production duties alongside Holmes herself. Other notable contributors to the album included Ash frontman Tim Wheeler, vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw and Youth himself on bass.

Technique released two singles on Creation in the summer of 1999: "Sun is Shining" and "You & Me". "Sun is Shining" reached No. 64 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1999 and "You & Me" got to No. 56 in August of the same year. The album, by now entitled Pop Philosophy, was promo-ed but never officially saw the light of day after McGee decided to close the label. Technique lay dormant for several years while McGee set up his new venture, Poptones. Holmes and Tyler contributed to Mission Control's Dub Showcase album (produced by Holmes's long-term associated Mad Professor), which featured several unreleased songs from Pop Philosophy.
