Transcript:
For pilots, they're a safety beacon; for birds, they're a death wish. We’re talking about red static tower lights.
According to a 2012 study, some 6.8 million birds die each year in the U.S. and Canada because of the red lights on communication towers. The birds — specifically migratory birds — are distracted by them, they're attracted to them, they get exhausted circling them, they run into them ... well you get the picture.
After being pushed to make some changes, the Federal Aviation Administration set up a test in Michigan to see if flashing the red lights on top of those towers helped reduce bird fatalities.
Turns out, it did. Flashing the red lights proved fine for smaller towers, but experts found they could omit the red lights altogether on towers over 351 feet.
Don't worry — the experts also made sure that the flashing light system was safe for pilots trying the land planes.
Now the FAA is implementing flashing red lights across the nation. All new towers will be outfitted with the flashing lights, and older towers will gradually be changed too.
As for what we do about the birds that just straight up fly into planes? Hopefully that's next on the list.

The Kashmiri people (Kashmiri: کٲشُر) are a Dardic linguistic group living in or originating from the former Indian state of Kashmir. That former state is presently disputed territory, comprising the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistani-administered territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit–Baltistan, and the People's Republic of China-administered regions of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract.
According to language research conducted by the International Institute of UCLA, the Kashmiri language is "a Northwestern Dardic language of the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-Iranian subfamily of the Indo-European language family." There is, however, no universally agreed genetic basis for the language. UCLA estimates the number of speakers as being around 4.4 million, with a preponderance in the Kashmir Valley, whereas the 2001 census of India recorded 5,362,349 throughout India, and thus excluding speakers in the non-Indian Kashmiri areas.
Horace Hayman Wilson, who died in 1860, noted that the recorded history of Kashmir commences with the Kurukshetra War, which is believed to date variously from 6000BCE to 500BCE.

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer, and businessman. Often referred to as the King of Pop, or by his initials MJ, Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records. His contribution to music, dance, and fashion, along with a much-publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971.
In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller", were credited with transforming the medium into an art form and a promotional tool, and the popularity of these videos helped to bring the relatively new television channel MTV to fame. Videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" made him a staple on MTV in the 1990s. Transcript: For pilots, they're a safety beacon; for birds, they're a death wish. We’re talking about red static tower lights. According to a 2012 study, some 6.8 million birds die each year in the U.S. and Canada because of the red lights on communication towers. The birds — specifically migratory birds — are distracted by them, they're attracted to them, they get exhausted circling them, they run into them ... well you get the picture. After being pushed to make some changes, the Federal Aviation Administration set up a test in Michigan to see if flashing the red lights on top of those towers helped reduce bird fatalities. Turns out, it did. Flashing the red lights proved fine for smaller towers, but experts found they could omit the red lights altogether on towers over 351 feet. Don't worry — the experts also made sure that the flashing light system was safe for pilots trying the land planes. Now the FAA is implementing flashing red lights across the nation. All new towers will be outfitted with the flashing lights, and older towers will gradually be changed too. As for what we do about the birds that just straight up fly into planes? Hopefully that's next on the list. For pilots, they're a safety beacon; for birds, they're a death wish. We’re talking about red static tower lights.
According to a 2012 study, some 6.8 million birds die each year in the U.S. and Canada because of the red lights on communication towers. The birds — specifically migratory birds — are distracted by them, they're attracted to them, they get exhausted circling them, they run into them ... well you get the picture.
After being pushed to make some changes, the Federal Aviation Administration set up a test in Michigan to see if flashing the red lights on top of those towers helped reduce bird fatalities.
Turns out, it did. Flashing the red lights proved fine for smaller towers, but experts found they could omit the red lights altogether on towers over 351 feet.
Don't worry — the experts also made sure that the flashing light system was safe for pilots trying the land planes.
Now the FAA is implementing flashing red lights across the nation. All new towers will be outfitted with the flashing lights, and older towers will gradually be changed too.
As for what we do about the birds that just straight up fly into planes? Hopefully that's next on the list.
