De La Soul is an American hip hop trio formed in 1987 on Long Island, New York. The band is best known for their eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres. The members are Posdnuos, Dave and Maseo. The three formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Prince Paul with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'". With its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits, the band's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, has been called "a hip hop masterpiece."
It is the band's biggest commercial success to date, with their subsequent albums selling progressively less, despite receiving high praise from critics. They were influential in the early stages of rapper/actor Mos Def's career, and are a core part of the Spitkicker collective. They are the second longest standing Native Tongues Posse group, after the Jungle Brothers. In 2006, the group won a Grammy for their collaboration with Gorillaz on the single "Feel Good Inc."
Stakes Is High is De La Soul's fourth full-length album, released on July 2, 1996. The album marked a change in the group's sound and direction as it was their first release not to be produced in collaboration with Prince Paul. Stakes Is High was mainly produced by the group themselves with additional tracks provided by Jay Dee, DJ Ogee, Spearhead X and Skeff Anslem. It received mostly strong reviews but little commercial success.
Stakes Is High marked the first time the group did not collaborate with long-time producer Prince Paul on an album.
After the album's release, the group toured extensively and remained rather quiet before returning in 2000 with the first installment in their "Art Official Intelligence" series, Mosaic Thump.
Stakes Is High dealt with many topics, including the state of hiphop, the commercialization of the hip-hop culture and criticism towards gangsta rap. This would cause great contempt with the late gangsta rapper 2Pac who would later retaliate on the song "Against All Odds" from his posthumous 1996 album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory. Naughty By Nature also took serious offense to the record, creating a feud that has only recently died down.
The soul in many religions, philosophical and mythological traditions, is the incorporeal and immortal essence of a living being. According to Abrahamic religions, only human beings have immortal souls. For example, the Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas attributed "soul" (anima) to all organisms but argued that only human souls are immortal. Other religions (most notably Jainism and Hinduism) teach that all biological organisms have souls, while some teach that even non-biological entities (such as rivers and mountains) possess souls. This latter belief is called animism.
Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle understood that the psyche (ψυχή) must have a logical faculty, the exercise of which was the most divine of human actions. At his defense trial, Socrates even summarized his teaching as nothing other than an exhortation for his fellow Athenians to excel in matters of the psyche since all bodily goods are dependent on such excellence (The Apology 30a–b).
Anima mundi is the concept of a "world soul" connecting all living organisms on the planet.

With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public Enemy's dense sonic barrage, De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia. "Stakes Is High" is a single by De La Soul released in 1996 from their album Stakes Is High. The music video for "Stakes Is High" has all three members of De La Soul on an episode of The Maury Povich Show (with Povich appearing as himself) about hip-hop culture in the 1990s and how much of an influence it is on the world, along with clips of each De La Soul member doing typical household chores (raking leaves, doing laundry, etc.).

De La Soul are one of the reasons we do what we do. Being 14 or so and hearing 3 Feet High and Rising had a pretty profound effect on us. So it was an honour to have De La Soul over to Dublin to perform for us in 2006. They revisited 5 years later in July 2011 and this time we recorded the show for posterity. Check the video out - the ChoiceCuts' crowds doing what they do best: going absolutely mental - and three HipHop legends alive and well doing what they do best and loving it at the same time. We're looking forward to welcoming Pos, Dave and Maseo back to Ireland in the near future... "The Artistic Disciplines" Departement created this video installation for “Pas Perdus,” a corridor filled with a mosaic of screens in Montreal’s Place des Arts. 20 scenarios depicted over 35 screens illustrate the different forms of live performance shown at the venue. While each screen has a specific action, the content often merges and interacts with a neighboring screen. Gravity is distorted and proportions are exaggerated, placing the viewer in a surreal landscape of performance. Like in the video installation, the music is a patchwork, a hybrid made from disparate elements - strings, voice, guitar, sanza, syths, drum, piano... - deconstructed and reassembled in order to create an audio ambiance which lives in harmony with the visuals. Disjointed and playful, this is an instal...

Buhloone is a phonetic spelling of the English noun "balloon". This theme is laid out in the intro track, which starts with the sound of a balloon being inflated; then the hookline "it might blow up, but it won't go pop" is repeated over and over, until the sound of a balloon popping replaces the final word "pop". This lends itself to the interpretation that the group h...

De La Soul has stood the test of time simply because they were different and weren’t afraid to be themselves. When you look back at their musical contribution it still pays dividends in the form of touring which they still do to this day. But, even trendsetters get inspiration from those around them and for the legendary group it was watching NWA in 1989 that had the biggest impact on them. The goosebumps…the high of just seeing how fans responded to their music singing word for word even down to the transitions sparked something that will inevitably take the group into more than 20 years of killing shows. Of course when you do something new or different you will be faced with opposition and they faced it head on. Hitting the stage with Bob Dylan at times or making similar moves just to ...

The instamatic focal point bringing damage to your boroughs
Be some brothers from the east with some beats that be thorough
Got the solar gravitation so I'm bound to pull it
I gets down like brothers are found ducking from bullets
Gun control means using both hands in my land
Where it's all about the cautious livin'? Migrating to a higher form
Of consequence, compliments of strugglin', that shouldn't be notable
Man, every word I say should be a hip hop quotable
I'm sick of bitch's shakin' asses, I'm sick of talkin' about blunts
Sick of Versace glasses, sick of slang, sick of half-ass awards shows
Sick of name brand clothes, sick of R&B; bitches over bullshit tracks
Cocaine and crack which brings sickness to blacks
Sick of swoll' head rappers with their sicker than raps
Clappers and gats, makin' the whole sick world collapse
The facts are gettin' sick even sicker perhaps
Stickabush to make a bundle to escape this synapse
Man life can get all up in your ass baby you betta work it out
Let me tell you what it's all about a skin not considered equal

You know them stakes is high, higher than high
When we talkin' 'bout the vibes, vibrations
Stakes is high, you know them stakes is high
When we dealin' with the vibes, vibrations
Stakes is high, hey yo, what about that love?
Yo, it's about love for cars, love for funds, loving to love mad sex
Loving to love guns, love for opposite, love for fame and wealth
Love for the fact of no longer loving yourself, kid, we living in them
Days of the man made ways where every aspect is vivid
These brothers no longer talk shit, hey yo, these niggas live it
'Bout to give it to you 24/7 on the microphone plug one translating
The zone, no offense to a player, but yo, I don't play
And if you take offense, fuck it, got to be that way
JD Dove, show your love, what you got to say?
I say G's are making figures at a high regard
And niggas dying for it Nowadays ain't odd, investing in fantasies
And not God, welcome to reality, see times is hard
People try to snatch the credit, but can't claim the card
Showing out in videos, saying they cold stars
See, shit like that will make your mama cry
Better watch the way you spend it, 'cause the stakes is high
Y'all know them stakes is high
When we talkin' 'bout the vibes, vibrations

I think that smiling in public is against the law
'Cause love don't get you through life no more
It's who you know and how you, son and how you gettin' in
And who the man holding, hey yo, and how was the scams
And how high? Yo what up? I heard you caught a body
Seem like every man and woman shared a life with John Gotti
But they ain't organized, mixing crimes with life enzymes
Taking the big scout route and niggas know doubt better
Than they know their daughters and their sons, oh boy
Yo, people go through pain and still don't gain positive contact
Just like my main man, who got others cleaning up
His physical influence, his mind got congested
He got the nine and blew it, neighborhoods are now hoods
'Cause nobody's neighbors, just animals surviving
With that animal behavior, under I, who be rhyming
From dark to light sky, experiments when needles and skin connect
No wonder where we live is called the projects
When them stakes is high you damn sure try to do anything to get
