Nicky Hopkins

Nicholas Christian "Nicky" Hopkins (24 February 1944 – 6 September 1994) was an English pianist and organist.

Hopkins recorded and performed on many notable British and American pop and rock music releases from the 1960s through the 1990s including many notable Rolling Stones releases.

Hopkins was born in Perivale, Middlesex, England. His musical talent emerged early and he began playing piano at age three. He was initially tutored by a local piano teacher and in his teens he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. He suffered from Crohn's disease from his youth. Poor health and ongoing surgery made it difficult for him to tour. This resulted in his working primarily as a studio player for most of his career.

Hopkins' studies were interrupted in 1960 when he left school at 16 to became the pianist with Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages until, two years later, he and fellow Savages Bernie Watson, Rick Brown (Fenson) and Carlo Little, joined the renowned blues harmonica player Cyril Davies, who had just left Blues Incorporated, and became the Cyril Davies R&B All Stars. Hopkins played piano on their first single, Davies' much-admired theme tune "Country Line Special". However he was forced to leave the All Stars in May 1963 for a series of operations that almost cost him his life and was bed-ridden for nineteen months in his late 'teens. During his convalescence Davies died of leukaemia and The All Stars disbanded.

George Harrison,MBE (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who achieved international fame as lead guitarist of The Beatles. Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison became over time an admirer of Indian culture and mysticism, and introduced it to the other Beatles, as well as their Western audience. Following the band's break-up he was a successful solo artist, and later a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys. Harrison was also a session musician and a film and record producer. He is listed at number 11 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

Although most of The Beatles' songs were written by Lennon and McCartney, Beatle albums generally included one or two of Harrison's own songs, from With The Beatles onwards. His later compositions with The Beatles include "Here Comes the Sun", "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". By the time of the band's break-up, Harrison had accumulated a backlog of material, which he then released as the triple album All Things Must Pass in 1970, from which two hit singles originated: a double A-side single, "My Sweet Lord" backed with "Isn't It a Pity", and "What Is Life". In addition to his solo work, Harrison co-wrote two hits for former Beatle Ringo Starr, as well as songs for the Traveling Wilburys—the supergroup he formed in 1988 with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison.

Piano , Bass . Percussion's track for ANGIE Backing tracks from the song "Angie" Piano Nicky Hopkins Drums Charlie Watts Bass Bill Wyman. The track Angie is from the Goat Heads Soup LP. This particular version with no vocal or guitar tracks features Nicky Hopkins on keyboards along with Charlie on the drums and Bill playing bass. Angie is about the end of a relationship, a romance gone badly, a lost love Elisa Edelman. It was written and composed primarily by Keith Richards. Urban legend has Mick Jagger writing the song for David Bowie' s wife but the truth is Keith wrote the song for Anita Pallenberg. Keith had just ended a relationship with Anita. Nicky Hopkins a long time friend & musical collaborator of the Stones plays a brilliant keyboard track which stands out in the song and along with Jagger's vocals make's this a magical song ! ANGIE Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear? Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here? With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats You can't say were satisfied But Angie, Angie, you can't say we never tried Angie, you're beautiful, but ain't it time we said goodbye? Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried? All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke Let me whisper in your ear: Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here? Oh, Angie, don't you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet I hate that sadness in your eyes But Angie, Angie, ain't it time we said goodbye? With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats You can't say were satisfied But Angie, I still love you, baby Everywhere I look I see your eyes There ain't a woman that comes close to you Come on baby, dry your eyes But Angie, Angie, ain't it good to be alive? Angie, Angie, they can't say we never tried

Nicholas Christian Hopkins born during an air raid during the night of 24th February 1944 in the London suburb of Perivale. Hopkins started in the early 60's with Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages, which also included Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin's founder). He played also with the Cyril Davies All Stars, one of the first British Rhythm & Blues bands. In 1965, he played piano on The Who's debut album and started playing keyboards in sessions for the top British bands including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and on solo albums by John Lennon, David Bowie and so many others. Hopkins moved to San Francisco and helped to define the lexicon of San Francisco's sound, playing with Jefferson Airplane and Steve Miller Band and early joined to the psychedelic band Quicksilver Messenger Service. The name of Nicky Hopkins featured in the credits of so many number of great rock albums from the late '60s through the '80s, underlining his amazing work on The Rolling Stones albums. For almost two decades, he was the most desired session pianist in rock; The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Jeff Beck Group, Steve Miller Band, there are so few many great rock bands that hadn't benefited from Nicky Hopkins' genius touch on the piano and keyboards. Nicky Hopkins only recorded three solo albums "The Revolutionary Piano Of Nicky Hopkins"(1966), "The Tin Man Was A Dreamer"(1973) and "No More Changes"(1975). Under his weak and delicate figure and often with ill health, Nicky Hopkins never toured much, preferring thus the studio to the road, dying in Nashville on 6th September 1994 at the tragically early age of fifty, from complications related to his lifelong illnesses. Nicky Hopkins was one of the most (maybe the most) important rock 'n' roll session musician ever. ------------------------------------------ Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Nicky Hopkins on piano "ROCKS OFF" alternate 1971 (2016) EXILE ON MAINSTREET 1971 SESSION. Nicholas Christian "Nicky" Hopkins (24 February 19446 September 1994) was an English pianist and organist. Hopkins recorded and performed on many notable British and American pop and rock music releases from the 1960s through the 1990s including many songs by The Rolling Stones.[1] With the Rolling Stones[edit] Hopkins played with the Rolling Stones on their studio albums from Between the Buttons in 1967 through Emotional Rescue in 1980 and Tattoo You in 1981. Among his contributions, he supplied the prominent piano parts on "We Love You" and "She's a Rainbow" (both 1967), "Sympathy for the Devil" (1968), "Monkey Man" (1969), "Sway" (1971), "Loving Cup" and "Ventilator Blues" (1972), "Angie" (1973), "Time Waits for No One" (1974) and "Waiting on a Friend" (1981). When working with the band during the 1970s, Hopkins tended to be employed on their slower, ballad-type songs, while longtime Stones keyboardist Ian Stewart played on traditional rock numbers, and Billy Preston featured on soul- and funk-influenced tunes. Hopkins' work with the Rolling Stones is perhaps most prominent on their 1972 studio album, Exile on Main St., where he contributed in a variety of musical styles. Along with Ry Cooder, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, Hopkins released the 1972 album Jamming with Edward! It was recorded in 1969, during the Stones' Let It Bleed sessions, when guitarist Keith Richards was not present in the studio. The eponymous "Edward" was an alias of Nicky Hopkins derived from studio banter with Brian Jones. It became the title for an outstanding Hopkins performance – "Edward, the Mad Shirt Grinder" – a song released on the Quicksilver Messenger Service album Shady Grove in December 1969. Hopkins also contributed to the Jamming With Edward! cover art. Hopkins was added to the Rolling Stones live line-up for the 1971 Good-Bye Britain Tour, as well as the notorious 1972 North American Tour and the early 1973 Winter Tour of Australia and New Zealand. He started to form his own band around this time but decided against it after the Stones tour. He had planned on using Prairie Prince on drums and Pete Sears on bass. Hopkins failed to make the Rolling Stones' 1973 tour of Europe due to ill health and, aside from a guest appearance in 1978, did not play again with the Stones live on stage. He did manage to go on tour with the Jerry Garcia Band, from 5 August to 31 December 1975.[9] "Rocks Off" is the opening track on the Rolling Stones' 1972 double album Exile on Main St.. It was also released as a single in Japan. Recorded between July 1971 and March 1972, "Rocks Off" is one of the songs on the album that was recorded at Villa Nellcôte, a house Keith Richards rented in the south of France during the summer and autumn of 1971. Overdubs and final mixing for the song were later done at Sunset Sound studios in Los Angeles, California between December 1971 and March 1972. The lyrics to the song are wide-ranging, harsh and brutally frank at times; as in Richards obviously referring to an injection of heroin: “ I'm zipping through the days at lightning speed. Plug in, flush out and fight and fuck and feed. Heading for the overload, Splattered on the dirty road, Kick me like you've kicked before, I can't even feel the pain no more. ” The song features a sudden divergence near the two minute fifteen second mark into what has been called a psychedelic jam of sorts, with Mick Jagger's vocals electronically distorted and the guitar chords stretched: “ Feel so hypnotized, can't describe the scene. Feel so mesmerized, all that inside me... ” Allmusic critic Jason Ankeny claims that the song "perfectly sets the mood for what's to follow -- murky, gritty, and menacingly raw, its strung-out incoherence captures the record's debauched brilliance with marble-mouthed eloquence."[1] Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine considers the song a masterpiece.[2] Jonathan Zwickel of Pitchfork considers it "some of the Rolling Stones' most enduring and soulful work."[3] The song's mix is notoriously haphazard, as many instruments, and even the lead vocals, fade in and out of prominence.[1] The villa's basement, where many of the songs were recorded, was extremely hot and many of the guitars could not stay in tune as a result. Jimmy Miller produced the track, and it features session men Nicky Hopkins on piano, Jim Price and Bobby Keys on brass, as well as regular band members Jagger (lead vocals), Richards (backing vocals, guitar), Charlie Watts (drums), Mick Taylor (guitar), and Bill Wyman (bass).

Quicksilver Messenger Service Winterland, San Francisco, CA April 15th, 1970 Quicksilver Messenger Service (QSM) were one of the quintessential San Franciscan bands who, although never equalling the success of their peers The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, still made some mgihty fine music, propelled by the twin guitars of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan, and later by the dextrous piano of Nicky Hopkins. Communal living, acid fuelled cowboy and Indian battles with The Grateful Dead, members jailed on drug charges, lengthy guitar passages and flaxen hair also gave them a certain counter cultural credibility that fitted the zeitgeist, outwardly marking them as wild men hippies. 00:00 Subway(6:09) 06:09 Too Far(3:51) 10:00 Warm Red Wine(2:56) 12:56 The Truth(7:53) 20:49 Mona(8:35) 29:26 Long Haired Lady(3:24) 32:50 Mojo(3:40) 36:30 Pride Of Man(4:07) 40:37 Edward The Mad Shirt Grinder(6:51) 47:29 Who Do You Love(29:29) John Cipollina(1943-1989)-Guitar Dino Valenti(1937-1994)-Vocal,Guitar Nicky Hopkins(1944-1994)-Piano Gary Duncan(1946- )-Guitar,Vocal Greg Elmore(1946- )-Drums David Freiberg(1938- )-Bass,Vocal

This rare Brian Jones vocal was recorded as part of a Nicky Hopkins And Brian Jones "Rock Opera" project called Edward, The Mad Shirt Grinder. Some of the material from this project was used on the Jamming With Edward album . Ian Stewart plays the Fender-Rhodes part. This session was recorded a night or two before Brain's death. When I remastered and organized Nicky's personal Discography Music Collection in 1976-1977, Nicky believed this was the last time all the original members of the Rolling Stones (Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Bill Wyman, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Mick Jagger) played together.
