Jan Hammer (Czech pronunciation: [ˈjan ˈɦamɛr]) (born 17 April 1948, in Prague, then Czechoslovakia, today the Czech Republic) is a Czech composer, pianist and keyboardist. He first gained his most visible audience while playing keyboards with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early 1970s, as well as his film scores for television and film including "Miami Vice Theme" and "Crockett's Theme", from the popular 1980s program, Miami Vice. He has continued to work as both a musical performer and producer, expanding to producing film later in his career.
Hammer has collaborated with some of the era's most influential jazz and rock musicians such as John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Mick Jagger, Carlos Santana, Stanley Clarke, Tommy Bolin, Neal Schon, Steve Lukather, and Elvin Jones among many others. He has composed and produced at least 14 original motion picture soundtracks, the music for 90 episodes of Miami Vice and 20 episodes of the popular British television series Chancer.
A video I made of the huge 80's TV show Miami Vice with the soundtrack of Crockett's Theme by Jan Hammer. Enjoy!

So for my live performance I made an arrangement that was influenced by both versions, but put my own twist on it. The tune ended my show in Dynamo, Turku, where this video was recorded 5th May 2012. Unfortunately, I only had three camcorders going and the heavy bass drum in the club made the cameras vibrate ...
Miami Vice: The Complete Collection is a compilation album featuring Jan Hammer's compositions from the hit TV series, Miami Vice. Hammer worked as the show's main composer from 1984 to 1988. He left shortly after Season 4 premiered in 1987 and was replaced by John Petersen for 13 episodes, but would make 2 more appearances in the season's final 2 episodes before leaving the show completely, and giving the job to Tim Truman, who would overhaul the show's background music to a much different sound beginning in Season 5. Included are some of Hammer's classic cues including "Crockett's Theme", "Marina", "Rain", "Theresa", "Crockett's Return" and "Stone's War". The album was released on May 29, 2002 on One Way Records. Track Listing: 1. Original Miami Vice Theme 2. Medley: New York Theme / F...

The best of Miami Vice Jan Hammer soundtrack Jan Hammer is a Czech-born keyboard player best known for the theme from the Miami Vice TV series. Hammer's early career was with a jazz fusion group, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. He played keyboards for the Mahavishnu until 1973, playing on their two critically acclaimed albums Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire. After leaving the Orchestra he worked with a number of collaborators, including Carlos Santana and Stanley Clarke, and released several critically acclaimed and commercially successful jazz rock albums with Jeff Beck. Of their releases, the platinum selling Wired was the most successful, although a later collaboration with Beck, the track "Escape" from Flash, won Hammer the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental. Out of this mess comes violinist Jerry Goodman teaming up with Jan Hammer to record an album together in 1974. Here Goodman plays more than just violin, he also plays guitar, and while you expect Hammer to shine on keyboards, he shines just as great on drums, which people often overlook. Both sing, and while singing is never their high point...

Six numbers, one more to dial
Before I'm before you tonight
I tried to call, been busy all night
Gave up waiting at daylight
Excuse me, Mrs. Busybody
Could you pencil me in when you can?
Though we both know that the worst part about it
Is I would be free when you wanted me
If you wanted me
I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man on the side
One of the many
One of the few
To stand back and wait for you
Excuse me, Mrs. Busybody
Could you pencil me in when you can?
Though we both know that the worst part about it
Is I would be free when you wanted me
If you wanted me
If you wanted me
I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man on the side
Life as the man on the side
I fell in love with the dream that I built of you
Playing the part of the queen
Taking my own advice, I'm giving up tonight
Good luck to you and the king
Excuse me, Mrs. Busybody
Could you pencil me in?
Though we both know that the worst part about it
Is I would be free when you wanted me
If you wanted me
If you wanted me
I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man
You know, life as the man
