The RIAA announced a major game-changer today that will have an immediate impact on the industry. In a statement from CEO and Chairman Cary Sherman, the RIAA revealed they will now factor audio and video streams into gold and platinum album certifications. Basically, this means that streams will now be counted for the first time when determining if an album is gold or platinum status. Because of the change, 17 projects reached a new milestone today, including Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise both hitting platinum status.
"We know that music listening – for both for albums and songs – is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications," Sherman said in a statement. "Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming is the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards, and doing so enables RIAA to fully reward the success of artists’ albums today." The breakdown is that 1,500 audio or video song streams equals 10 track sales, which then equals one album sale. With the streaming revolution in full swing, this is sure to have a major and immediate impact on the game. Check out all 17 albums that hit a new milestone today below.

In a recent appeal of a decision that gutted a $675,000 finding against an Internet user who downloaded and shared just 30 songs, the government sided with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in claiming that a judge has no right to reduce the amount, no matter how "excessive" it may be deemed.

In the 1940s there were as many as 100 different turntable EQs for records. So in 1954 the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America established an EQ for records so that all disc recordings would be standardized.
This EQ added hi-frequency pre-emphasis to minimize the surface noise, in the same way that the NAB EQ helps minimize tape hiss. However, since music today is mixed with much more hi-frequency content than in 1954, care needs to be taken to assure that sibilance distortion doesn't occur, due to this hi-frequency premphasis.
In addition, the RIAA EQ adds a 6 dB per octave hi-pass roll off starting at 1 kHz, so that the signal at 20 Hz is reduced by 20 dB. This permits narrower grooves, allowing more time to be recorded on the disc. Without this low-end roll off, only about 5 minutes of music could be recorded on a 12" disc.
Then on playback of the disc, the highs are attenuated to match the pre-emphasis and the bass is boosted to match the de-emphasis.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the recording industry distributors in the United States. Its members consist of record labels and distributors, which the RIAA say "create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legally sold recorded music in the United States." RIAA has its headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The RIAA was formed in 1952 primarily to administer the RIAA equalization curve,[citation needed] a technical standard of frequency response applied to vinyl records during recording. The RIAA participates in the collective rights management of sound recording. The association is also responsible for certifying Gold and Platinum albums and singles in the USA.
The RIAA lists its goals as:
Cary Sherman has been the RIAA's chairman and CEO since 2011. Sherman joined the RIAA as its general counsel in 1997 and became president of the board of directors in 2001, serving in that position until being made chairman and CEO.

The RIAA Will Now Factor Streaming Into Gold and Platinum Album Certifications
The RIAA announced a major game-changer today that will have an immediate impact on the industry. In a statement from CEO and Chairman Cary Sherman, the RIAA revealed they will now factor audio and video streams into gold and platinum album certifications. Basically, this means that streams will now be counted for the first time when determining if an album is gold or platinum status. Because of the change, 17 projects reached a new milestone today, including Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise both hitting platinum status. RIAA EQ
In the 1940s there were as many as 100 different turntable EQs for records. So in 1954 the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America established an EQ for records so that all disc recordings would be standardized. This EQ added hi-frequency pre-emphasis to minimize the surface noise, in the same way that the NAB EQ helps minimize tape hiss. However, since music today is mixed with much more hi-frequency content than in 1954, care needs to be taken to assure that sibilance distortion doesn't occur, due to this hi-frequency premphasis. In addition, the RIAA EQ adds a 6 dB per octave hi-pass roll off starting at 1 kHz, so that the signal at 20 Hz is reduced by 20 dB. This permits narrower grooves, allowing more time to be recorded on the disc. Without this low-end roll off, ... -

In the 1940s there were as many as 100 different turntable EQs for records. So in 1954 the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America established an EQ for records so that all disc recordings would be standardized.
This EQ added hi-frequency pre-emphasis to minimize the surface noise, in the same way that the NAB EQ helps minimize tape hiss. However, since music today is mixed with much more hi-frequency content than in 1954, care needs to be taken to assure that sibilance distortion doesn't occur, due to this hi-frequency premphasis.
In addition, the RIAA EQ adds a 6 dB per octave hi-pass roll off starting at 1 kHz, so that the signal at 20 Hz is reduced by 20 dB. This permits narrower grooves, allowing more time to be recorded on the disc. Without this low-end roll off, only about 5 minutes of music could be recorded on a 12" disc.
Then on playback of the disc, the highs are attenuated to match the pre-emphasis and the bass is boosted to match the de-emphasis.

- 지난 2008년 발매된 6집앨범 Riaa Bridge (리아 브릿지)이후, 6년 만에 선보이는 첫 싱글 앨범 「심장이 울어요」를 발표한 리아는 이 앨범을 시작으로 제 2의 음악인생을 살고 싶다고 말한다. 그동안 인생의 굴곡을 오르내리며 느꼈던 많은 감정과 느낌을 음악에 담아 대중들에게 한 발 더 다가가려고 하는 것이다. 짧은 머리에 기타를 맨 스무살 시절 그녀의 모습을 기대하는 사람에게는 다소 생소할 수 있겠지만, 성숙한 뮤지션으로서 다시 돌아온, 그러나 시대에 뒤떨어지지 않는 리아의 모습이 어떨지 궁금하다.
2014년 1월 새롭게 발표되는 리아의 신곡 「심장이 울어요」는 리아가 직접 작사하고 제목을 달았다. 보컬이자 작사가로서 언제나 자신의 목소리를 내길 원하는 그녀는 자신의 경험과 감정을 바탕으로 이 곡의 노랫말을 완성했다. 「심장이 울어요」는 작곡가 샤인의 곡으로 프로듀서 황인문의 지휘하에 기타에 함춘호,베이스에 신현권, 드럼에 강수호 등 예전 리아의 음악을 함께한 뮤지션들이 다시한번 팀웍을 맞추었고 스트링에 심상원등 국내 최정상 뮤지션들이 대거참여했다. 아름다운 피아노와 부드러운 바이올린 선율이 리아의 매력적인 목소리를 더더욱 돋보이게 한다. 활동하지 않는 기간에도 항상 음악 공부를 게을리 하지 않았다는 리아는 앞으로도 작사는 물론 틈틈이 하던 작곡에도 욕심이 있다고 한다. 6년 만에 조심스럽게 새 날개짓을 시작한 리아,그녀를 기억하는 팬들의 따뜻한 관심과 새로이 그녀를 알아갈 팬들의 성원이 한동안 무대를 떠나있었던 그녀를 다시 한 번 비상하게 하는 힘이 될 수 있을 것이다.

Rihanna released her much-delayed, yet long-awaited eighth studio album, ANTI, abruptly this past Thursday.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album platinum in a mere 15 hours.
The pop star released the album through Jay Z's Tidal streaming service (to which she also serves as "co-owner") and was reportedly downloaded and/or bought 1.4 million times.
Tidal's director of marketing, Grace Kim, confirmed that the rumor of them accidentally leaking the album was true but it obviously did more good than harm.
Here’s what she said to SPIN:
When we started this campaign, we expected this to take a week,That’s a really big deal for us...There were conversations [with Billboard] early on when this promotion and partnership started, but ultimately it became about giving music directly to the fans,While everyone would’ve love to have it count, the thing that we’re focused on here is that it’s No. 1.
Rhianna also thanked her fans by tweeting. THANK U NAVY!!! #ANTI IS PLATINUM!!
ANTI is now available for purchase and stream via Tidal.
