Shaka kaSenzangakhona (circa 1787 – 22 September 1828), also known as Shaka Zulu (Zulu pronunciation: [ˈʃaːɠa]), was one of the most influential monarchs of the Zulu Kingdom.
He was born near present-day Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal Province. According to tradition, Shaka was conceived during an act of what began as ukuhlobonga, a form of sexual foreplay without penetration allowed to unmarried couples, also known as "the fun of the roads" (ama hlay endlela), during which the lovers were "carried away".
Due to persecution as a result of his illegitimacy, Shaka spent his childhood in his mother's settlements. He is recorded as having been initiated there and inducted into an ibutho lempi (fighting unit). In his early days, Shaka served as a warrior under the sway of Dingiswayo, chieftain of the Mthethwa, to whom the Zulu were then paying tribute.
Dingiswayo called up the emDlatsheni iNtanga (age-group), of which Shaka was part, and incorporated it into the Izichwe regiment. Shaka served as a Mthethwa warrior for perhaps as long as ten years, and distinguished himself with his courage and his adept skill as a close combat warrior. This skill gained the attention of Dingiswayo, who became even more interested in Shaka when he discovered Shaka's royal bloodline. He honoured Shaka by making him commander of a regiment or ibutho.
Boom Shaka was a pioneering kwaito music group from South Africa, consisting of Junior Sokhela, Lebo Mathosa, Theo Nhlengethwa and Thembi Seete. Their first album was produced in 1994. Boom Shaka's first single "It's About Time" was released in 1993. This track (and others by Boom Shaka) can be found on Stern's Music website (http://www.sternsmusic.com/discography_detailed/665). Boom Shaka became one of the most successful bands of the mid-1990s in South Africa and their music became the soundtrack for many young people in the newly democratic South Africa. Boom Shaka was able to break into the international market and achieved success outside of South Africa in London among other places.
Boom Shaka, being one of the leading kwaito groups in South Africa, has an extreme effect on youth audiences throughout the country. To begin, Boom Shaka was purposefully put together to appeal to a youth audience by presenting a new sound and a new style. Today, they are continually sweeping the charts and propelling in the youth audiences due to their distinctive sound, visual style, and dance moves. Boom Shaka is known for creating popular and distinctive kwaito dance moves such as "Chop di Grass". "Chop di grass" pays homage to the men who mow the grass during the construction of highways. This dancing is said to come from traditional African dance moves, continuing to make kwaito a unique and localised South African music genre. For example, they say that their dancing comes from an urban dance of Zaire called the Kwasa Kwasa. These sexy kwaito dance moves add to their popularity. This uniqueness is propelling Boom Shaka's music in the youth radio charts and on a global level as well.1
Brianna Perry (born January 11, 1992), also known as Lil' Brianna, is an American rapper and actress from Miami-Dade County, Florida. She was the youngest act signed to Missy Elliott's label The Goldmind Inc. as well as the youngest to be affiliated with Slip-N-Slide Records, home to rappers Trina and Rick Ross. Perry made her debut on Trina's album Diamond Princess on the track "Kandi". Since then, she has released several mixtapes and starred as a regular cast-member on the reality-television series Sisterhood of Hip Hop.
At the age of 7, under the supervision of her uncles, Brianna Perry made her first recording at the Poe Boy Music Group studios. Her frequent visits to the studio would accumulate the attention of rappers Trina and Trick Daddy, the former who would grant Perry a recording deal with Diva Records (Diva Enterprises/DP Entertainment). From there, Perry guest starred on BET's Rap City and made her rapping debut on Trina's Diamond Princess on the track "Kandi", which would attract the attention of Missy Elliott. Elliott would go on to sign Perry to her label, The Goldmind Inc., and feature the young rapper in various promotional concerts with her and Timbaland. Additionally, Perry would also make cameo appearances in a few of Elliott's work such as the music video to "Pass That Dutch" and her short-lived reality series, The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott. In between cameo work, Perry would work extensively on an untitled debut album which tentatively comprised forty tracks and sole production from Elliott and Timbaland; however, the project was never released. In 2006, due to creative differences, Perry parted ways with Elliott on good terms.
