Lawrence M. Krauss – Ein Universum aus Nichts... – DAI Heidelberg

Krauss was born in New York City but spent his childhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On January 19, 1980, he married Katherine Kelley, a native of Nova Scotia. Their daughter, Lilli, was born November 23, 1984. Krauss and Kelley separated in 2010 and were divorced in 2012. Krauss married Australian/American Nancy Dahl on Jan 7, 2014. Krauss received undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics with first class honours at Carleton University (Ottawa) in 1977, and was awarded a Ph.D. in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982.
After some time in the Harvard Society of Fellows, Krauss became an assistant professor at Yale University in 1985 and associate professor in 1988. He was named the Ambrose Swasey Professor of Physics, professor of astronomy, and was chairman of the physics department at Case Western Reserve University from 1993 to 2005. In 2006, Krauss led the initiative for the no-confidence vote against Case Western Reserve University's president Edward M. Hundert and provost Anderson by the College of Arts and Sciences faculty. On March 2, 2006, both no-confidence votes were carried: 131--44 against Hundert and 97--68 against Anderson.
In August 2008, Krauss joined the faculty at Arizona State University as Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at the Department of Physics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He also became the Director of the Origins Project, a university initiative.[2] In 2009, he helped inaugurate this initiative at the Origins Symposium, in which eighty scientists participated and three thousand people attended.[3]
Krauss appears in the media both at home and abroad to facilitate public outreach in science. He has also written editorials for The New York Times. As a result of his appearance in 2004 before the state school board of Ohio, his opposition to intelligent design has gained national prominence.[4]
Krauss attended and was a speaker at the Beyond Belief symposia in November 2006 and October 2008. He served on the science policy committee for Barack Obama's first (2008) presidential campaign and, also in 2008, was named co-president of the board of sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. In 2010, he was elected to the board of directors of the Federation of American Scientists; and in June 2011, he joined the professoriate of the New College of the Humanities, a private college in London.[5] In 2013, he accepted a part time professorship at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics in the Physics Department of the Australian National University.[6]
Krauss is a critic of string theory, which he discusses in his 2005 book Hiding in the Mirror.[7] Another book, released in March 2011, was titled Quantum Man: Richard Feynman's Life in Science, while A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather than Nothing -- with an afterword by Richard Dawkins -- was released in January 2012 and became a New York Times bestseller within a week. Originally, its foreword was to have been written by Christopher Hitchens, but Hitchens grew too ill to complete it.[8][9] The paperback version of the book appeared in January 2013 with a new question-and-answer section and a new preface that included material on the Higgs boson.
A July 2012 article in Newsweek written by Krauss indicated how the Higgs particle may explain the causation of the Big Bang. He also wrote a longer piece in the New York Times explaining the science behind and significance of the particle.[10]
Krauss also featured in a full-length documentary entitled The Unbelievers in which he and Richard Dawkins travel across the globe speaking publicly about the importance of science and reason as opposed to religion and superstition. They also interview prominent figures such as Stephen Hawking, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Sam Harris, and Cameron Diaz.

Er ist Autor mehrerer Bestseller, darunter The Physics of Star Trek.

Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2013: Lawrence Krauss & Peter Rollins - New Religions vs. New Atheism
Have the new atheists won the battle of ideas by proving that religion isn't true? Scientists and philosophers such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and Lawrence Krauss have brought a new fire to debates on religion and belief by using the tools of logic and scientific method to dismantle the 'God Hypothesis.' But the response of 'new religion' is that theology
Professor Lawrence Krauss on Fractals - YBC 2013

I was hoping to get some time with Professor Krauss to share with him my discoveries with him. I couldn’t believe he was coming to my work, what an opportunity. When I did get my chance, it was the end of the day and he was tired. I didn’t want to get in ahead of my student’s, and besides I was nervous to talk about what I had discovered.
I talked to him after this clip. I have it on film. He said after I told him I have fractal expanding like the universe. He said: “Join the queue, I get about three a week”. “You are probably wrong; publish and you’ll find out why you’re wrong.” It was a great day otherwise, and a great opportunity.
I wrote up my experiment, and I’ve tried to publish, but is difficult, I'm an amateur, and I have so much to work on with the fractal, so I have settled with posting at academia.edu. (below)
Essentially I inverted the fractal to measure what one would observe if within one.
I have conducted an experiment on the fractal attractor: measuring and analysing, via classical kinematic equations, changes in points in the fractal as the fractal iterations / grows with time.
I have found the inverted fractal demonstrates some 6 or 7 cosmic observations including: singularity beginning, rapid exponential expansion, Hubble’s Law (increasing recession velocity with distance), and accelerated expansion with distance. When I set the original area to the Planck Area and expanded it to an arbitrary value of 1, I found it expands very (!) fast – within the range of inflation theory conjecture. Very fast. Fractal expansion, I have found the geometry may explain the distribution of galaxies in the observable universe.
There is a lot more, and I have started on the very weird isolated fractal - it seems to do what experts say atomic particles do in the 'quantum' world.
The geometry of the fractal is my business, not the images, not the pictures, and I have not found or discerned any 'special' meaning behind them. They just do it.

Anyone who has ever wondered "could this really happen?” will gain useful insights into the Star Trek universe (and, incidentally, the real world of physics) in this charming and accessible guide. Lawrence M. Krauss boldly goes where Star Trek has gone-and beyond. Have the new atheists won the battle of ideas by proving that religion isn't true? Scientists and philosophers such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and Lawrence Krauss have brought a new fire to debates on religion and belief by using the tools of logic and scientific method to dismantle the 'God Hypothesis.' But the response of 'new religion' is that theology cannot necessarily be understood by evidence or facts. As with the belief in equality or the belief that torture is wrong, defending religious belief in this misses the point. According to Peter Rollins, "faith is not placed into danger by being exposed as counter-factual," and to try and defend it in this way is to undermine its very nature. Can these contemporary views of religion open a new front in the atheism vs. religion battle? Or are they just a strategy to co-opt the middle ground for the religious? Join new atheism's most entertaining exponent Lawrence Krauss and postmodern religious firebrand Peter Rollins for a challenging debate.

Evolution vs. Intelligent Design: Lawrence M. Krauss on Science, Religion & Academia (2008) Krauss was born in New York City but spent his childhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He also became the Director of the Origins Project, a university initiative.[2] In 2009, he helped inaugurate this initiative at the Origins Symposium, in which eighty scientists participated and three thousand people attended.[3] Krauss appears in the media both at home and abroad to facilitate public outreach in science. He has also written editorials for The New York Times. As a result of his appearance in 2004 before the state school board of Ohio, his opposition to intelligent design has gained national prominence.[4] Krauss attended and was a speaker at the Beyond Belief symposia in November 2006 and October 2008. He served on the science policy committee for Barack Obama's first (2008) presidential campaign and, also in 2008, was named co-president of the board of sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. In 2010, he was elected to the board of directors of the Federation of American Scientists; and in June 2011, he joined the professoriate of the New College of the Humanities, a private college in London.[5] In 2013, he accepted a part time professorship at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics in the Physics Department of the Australian National University.[6] Krauss is a critic of string theory, which he discusses in his 2005 book Hiding in the Mirror.[7] Another book, released in March 2011, was titled Quantum Man: Richard Feynman's Life in Science, while A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather than Nothing -- with an afterword by Richard Dawkins -- was released in January 2012 and became a New York Times bestseller within a week. He also wrote a longer piece in the New York Times explaining the science behind and significance of the particle.[10] Krauss also featured in a full-length documentary entitled The Unbelievers in which he and Richard Dawkins travel across the globe speaking publicly about the importance of science and reason as opposed to religion and superstition. They also interview prominent figures such as Stephen Hawking, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Sam Harris, and Cameron Diaz.

Lecture given by Professor Lawrence M. Krauss at the CERN Colloquium on Cosmological Physics.
The last decade or two have represented the golden age of observational cosmology, producing a revolution in our picture of the Universe on its largest scales, and perhaps also its smallest ones. In this lecture, Prof. Krauss will argue that these recent development bring to the forefront some vexing questions about whether various fundamental assumptions about the universe are in fact falsifiable. In this he will focus on 3 issues: (1) "Proving" Inflation, (2) Dark Energy and Anthropic Arguments, and (3) Cosmology of the far future.
In 2014, the potential "smoking gun" for inflation was thought to have been found with the following experimental techniques https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCbk4afiF1c, Super-sensitive, superconducting microwave detectors, built at NIST, and implemented at BICEP and Keck telescope arrays at the South Pole have allowed astrophysicists to find out some of the answers with new observational results.
The Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (BICEP) results are indirect evidence for the existence of the elusive gravitational waves from the big bang itself.
By using highly sensitive microwave detectors, developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), telescope cameras can detect the polarization direction of photons emitted from the moment of last scattering between the photons and electrons in the plasma of the early universe, before stars and galaxies could form.
These photons make up the CMB Radiation, which radiated outward after electromagnetic radiation decoupled itself from the plasma state of matter in the early universe, as the plasma formed into a gas, making space transparent for the first time. The photons emitted at the moment of last scattering, 13.7 Billion years ago, were gamma ray photons. Since then, they have been travelling almost uniformly, in every direction across the universe. Since the universe is expanding, these photons have stretched with the fabric of spacetime as the universe expanded and this has stretched their wavelength from gamma rays to microwaves.
The apparently uniform pattern of polarization in the CMB can be broken into two components.
One, a curl-free, gradient-only component, the E-mode (named in analogy to electrostatic fields).
The second component is divergence-free, curl only, and is known as the B-mode (named in analogy to magnetic fields).
Cosmologists predict two types of B-modes, the first generated during cosmic inflation shortly after the big bang, and the second generated by gravitational lensing at later times.
Now, the BICEP team has confirmed detection of the first type of B-modes, consistent with inflation and gravitational waves in the early universe
However, there are now grave doubts over the validity of the results. The BICEP2 team underestimated how much dust in our own galaxy can polarize microwave radiation, which was tested with ESA's Planck Mission that observed these effects and compensated for them. In order to salvage any hope of a discovery claim they will have to take more data from BICEP2 and Planck, compensate for the effects of space dust, and then publish the paper before making any announcement as it is a big claim to make, to be sure whether they had in fact seen the first signs of gravitational waves from the Big Bang, or were fooled by the effects of intergalactic space dust. Either way the results were announced too early and without proper scrutiny. The results may yet be salvaged when the results are compensated for the intergalactic dust or they may have to go back to the drawing board and wait for a new series of experiments, including an orbiting satellite for observing B-mode polarization from the CMB. Either way, we are making progress as we now have a real opportunity to answer observational questions that would not have even been asked a decade ago.

Chair: Simon Longstaff is Executive Director of St James Ethics Centre, and is co-curator of Festival of Dangerous Ideas.
Lawrence M. Krauss is a renowned cosmologist and science communicator, and is the author of recent bestseller A Universe From Nothing.
Peter Rollins is a leading figure of the postmodern Christianity movement and author of books such as How (Not) to Speak of God and Insurrection.
