Oslo (English pronunciation: /ˈɒzloʊ/, OZ-loh,Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈuʂˈlu] ( listen) or, rarer [ˈusˈlu] or [ˈuʂlu]) is the capital and the most populous city in Norway.
Oslo constitutes both a county and a municipality. Founded in the year 1040, and established as a "kaupstad" or trading place in 1048 by King Harald III, the city was elevated to a bishopric in 1070 and a capital under Haakon V around 1300. Personal unions with Denmark from 1397 to 1523 and again from 1536 to 1814 and with Sweden from 1814 to 1905 reduced its influence. After being destroyed by a fire in 1624, the city was moved closer to Akershus Fortress during the reign of King Christian IV and renamed Christiania in his honour. It was established as a municipality (formannskapsdistrikt) on 1 January 1838. Following a spelling reform, it was known as Kristiania from 1877 to 1925, at which time its original Norwegian name was restored.
Oslo is the economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. It is an important centre for maritime industries and maritime trade in Europe. The city is home to many companies within the maritime sector, some of which are among the world's largest shipping companies, shipbrokers and maritime insurance brokers. Oslo is a pilot city of the Council of Europe and the European Commission intercultural cities programme.
Oslo Cathedral (Norwegian: Oslo domkirke) — formerly Our Savior's Church (Norwegian: Vår Frelsers kirke) — is the main church for the Church of Norway Diocese of Oslo, as well as the parish church for downtown Oslo. The present building dates from 1694-1697.
The Norwegian Royal Family and the Norwegian Government use the Cathedral for public events. It was closed for renovation in August 2006 and re-opened with a festive high mass on 18 April 2010.
The current Oslo Cathedral is the third cathedral in Oslo, Norway. The first, Hallvards Cathedral, was built by King Sigurd I of Norway in the first half of the 12th century, and was located by the Old Bishop's Palace in Oslo, some 1.5 kilometers east of today's Oslo Cathedral.
For almost 500 years, Hallvards Cathedral was the most important church in the city. After a great fire in Oslo during 1624, King Christian IV decided to move the city a few kilometers west to be protected by Akershus Fortress. Construction of a new church was started in 1632, on the main square in the new city. After that, Hallvards Cathedral fell into disrepair and decayed.
Edvard Hagerup Grieg (Norwegian: [ ˈɛdʋɑɖ ˈhɑːɡərʉp ˈɡrɪɡ]; 15 June 1843 – 4 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use and development of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions put the music of Norway in the international spectrum, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius and Antonín Dvořák did in Finland and Bohemia, respectively. Grieg is regarded as simultaneously nationalistic and cosmopolitan in his orientation, for although born in Bergen and buried there, he traveled widely throughout Europe, and considered his music to express both the beauty of Norwegian rural life and the culture of Europe as a whole. He is the most celebrated person from the city of Bergen, with numerous statues depicting his image, and many cultural entities named after him: the city's largest building (Grieg Hall), its most advanced music school (Grieg Academy), its professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor), and even some private companies that include its largest hotel (Quality Hotel Edvard Grieg), and a music technology developer (Grieg Music). The Edvard Grieg Museum in Troldhaugen (Grieg's former home in Bergen) is dedicated to his legacy.

The Cathedral of Oslo - Domkirke lies right infront of the Great Square in Oslo Centre. With the Norwegian name Oslo Domkirke, or Domkirken Oslo. This Church In Oslo is definitely worth a visit on your Oslo Travel. Many will recognize the Cathedral from the pictures and reports made world over after the Bomb In Oslo where many layed down flowers on the steps of the Church in sympati of the victims. The Oslo Cathedral became a gathering point for the city and its citicens at this time of need. The Oslo Church was inaugurated in 1697 while Norway was still under Danish Rule. Crews are starting to clear flowers and other items placed in front of Oslo's main cathedral as a memorial following the July 22 attacks in Norway. But the mementos are being sorted before they're being dumped. (Aug. 2011)
The last of my videos from this year's Culture Night ... the last event we participated in, a tour of Oslo cathedral. We went into rooms that are usually closed to the public, most notably the crypt. I'm sorry that the video isn't very good ... it was late at night and it was dark outside, and not a lot of light was lit inside the church. It was supposed to strike a certain mood. :-) These are at least a few glimpses of Oslo's biggest and most important church. A few historical details: this church, originally the Church of Our Savior, is Oslo's third cathedral. It was constructed in the 17th century and consecrated in 1697. It was rather a prestige project after the first cathedral, dedicated to St Hallvard, Oslo's patron saint, had been lost in the fire of 1624 that almost completely ...

Welcome to Oslo, the capital city of Norway. Centuries ago, Viking longships prowled the waters around Norway. Some of those longships survived the ensuing years and found their way to the Viking Ship Museum, which is a must-see on any Oslo tour. The three longships on display here have been recovered from various parts of the country, and the museum also contains a number of artifacts from the Viking Age. Norway’s rich connection to the sea did not stop with the Vikings, though; just over a mile away from the Viking Ship Museum are several other educational complexes dedicated to the salt water that flows through Oslo’s veins. Visit the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, and the Fram Museum to get a fuller idea of Oslo’s seaborne heritage. While in town, stop by the Nobel...
Top Sightseeing locations to visit in Oslo, Norway. Including Downtown Oslo, The Royal Castle, museums, Vigelandsparken, Holmenkollen, and more. The exact locations are listed at the end of the description. The Oslo Opera: Do this one! The opera building is adjacent to the central station, and it's awesome. It's architecture is like walking on an iceberg, and it overlooks the Oslo fjord and Akershus Castle. Doesn't take much time. Karl Johans gate: The main walking street that connects Central Station (Oslo S) with the Royal Castle. I guess it's a must when you come to Oslo. You can't avoid it, and you shouldn't! Because it's the main street of Oslo. But Karl Johan is mostly for the tourists, beggars, scammers. People that live in Oslo, like me, hardly ever go there. Royal Castle:...

Travel video about destination Oslo in Norway. Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city, it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. The unique capital city of the Vikings is full of both culture and sport, including a royal castle, various museums, ancient churches and world famous sporting events. It has 900 years of history. The conference rooms of the city's government are decorated with frescos and paintings by Munch, Krogh, Revold and Rolfsen and each year on the 10th of December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony takes place. West of the harbor basin is Aker Brygge, a city quarter that was created on the site of a former shipyard and which features some unusual architectur...

Karl Johans gate is the main walking street of Oslo. It stretches from Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) on one side, to the Royal Palace (Slottet) on the other. Btw. "Karl Johans gate" literally means "Karl Johan's Street". The Visit Oslo tourist information office is located at the east side of Oslo Central Station. On the place outside of the station (Jernbanetorget) there is a clock tower called Trafikanten, which houses the Public Transportation Information office. The lower parts of Karl Johan, and especially the first intersecting street, Skippergata, is infamous for junkies and street prostitution. The second intersection street is Dronningens gate (The Queen's street). Here there is a small shopping center Arkaden. Also in Dronningens gate is Kirkeristen, which houses a few cafes ...
Off the beaten path, but right at the center of Oslo is the river that divides Oslo into east and west. Akerselva starts at Maridalsvannet lake in the north of Oslo, and discharges into the Oslo Fjord, right behind the Oslo Opera. Despite being a much used green area by Oslo locals, not many tourists find their way to Akerselva. The area around the lowest parts of Akerselva is called Vaterland, and is right behind of Oslo Central Station. The Vaterland area isn’t particularly nice as there are some shady characters hanging around there, but it’s safe to walk there at daytime. Above Vaterland the river passes to the west of Grünerløkka. Around the two bridges Nybrua and Ankerbrua, there are a number of cafes, bars and restaurants. There are also some interesting houses along the river, li...
Grünerløkka is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Oslo, a hipster paradise a 10 minute walk from Central Station. Surprisingly few tourists visit Grünerløkka, and that's really a pity. Some of the nicest cafes and bars in Oslo are located in Grünerløkka, and it's a foodies paradise. The main street of Grünerløkka is Thorvald Meyers gate. Thorvald Meyers gate starts where Ankerbrua brigde crosses Akerselva river, and ends at Birkelunden park in the north. Tram lines 11, 12 and 13 have three stops along Thorvald Meyers gate. From south to north: Schous plass Olaf Ryes plass Birkelunden Most of the shops, bars, restaurants and cafes on Grünerløkka are located around the Birkelunden and Olaf Ryes plass parks, and in the segment of Thorvald Meyers gate that is connecting them.
