Patras ist ein wichtiger Hafen und eine Handelsmetropole. Schon von weitem ist die Rio-Andirrio-Brücke zu sehen, die den Golf von Korinth im Westen bei Rio, in der Nähe von Patras, überspannt. Die Brücke zählt mit 2.252 m zu den längsten Schrägseilbrücken der Welt. Der Golf wird hier häufig von starken Winden durchzogen, bietet nur sandigen Untergrund und liegt in einem seismisch aktiven Gebiet. Beim Bau der innovativen Brücke gelangten völlig neue Konstruktionsprinzipien zur Anwendung.
Einige Zeit stand Patras unter dem Einfluss der Venezianer, was noch heute im Stadtbild deutlich erkennbar ist. 1820 wurde sie durch ein Erdbeben in weiten Teilen zerstört. 1821 flammte hier der griechische Unabhängigkeitskampf auf. Dabei wurden die Osmanen auf die Zitadelle zurückgedrängt. Nach der Räumung gelang es den Osmanen die Stadt zurückzuerobern und komplett zu zerstörten.
Im Osten der Stadt in der Nähe des Hafens steht die griechisch-orthodoxe Andreaskirche - Agios Andreas. Sie ist die größte Kirche Griechenlands und eine der größten in Europa, mit Platz für 5.500 Besucher. Die zentrale Kuppel ist 50 m hoch.

Patras is a major port and a center of trade and commerce. Even from a distance one can see the Rio--Antirrio bridge crossing the Gulf of Corinth. It connects the town of Rio near Patras on the Peloponnese with the mainland of Greece. The bridge is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world. The five-span four-pylon cable-stayed has a length of 7,388 ft.
The bay is frequently run through by strong winds in this area. The bridge lies in a seismically active area with sandy subsoil. For the construction of the innovative bridge completely new design principles have been applied.
For some time Patras was under the influence of the Venetians, which still can be seen in the cityscape today. In 1820 it was destroyed by an earthquake in large parts. 1821 the Greek struggle for independence flared up in Patras. The Ottomans were forced back to the citadel. After the evacuation, the Ottomans managed to reconquer the city and destroyed it completely.
In the east of the city near the harbor is the Greek Orthodox basilica of Saint Andrew - Agios Andreas. It is the largest church in Greece and one of the largest in Europe with place for 5,500 visitors. The central dome has a heigth of 164 ft.

Syed Ahmed Shah[1] (Urdu: سید احمد شاہ ) (commonly known as Patras Bokhari - پطرس بخاری) HI, (1 October 1898, Peshawar -- 5 December 1958, New York) was an Urdu humourist, educator, essayist, broadcaster and diplomat from Pakistan. He is best known for his humorous writings in Urdu literature.
His volume of essays, Patras Kay Mazameen - پطرس کے مظامین (Essays of Patras), published in 1927 is considered as an asset of Urdu humor.
He accompanied Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan on his first visit to the United States as the Prime Minister's speech writer.
In 1945 Patras Bokhari was awarded the Companion of the Indian Empire (CIE) Award.
Bokhari Auditorium on Government College University is named after him [1].
The Government of Tunisia, named a Road after him in Tunis, as a recognition for his contribution towards the freedom of Tunisia from French Colonial Rule in 1956.
There is also a road named after him in Islamabad, Federal Capital of Pakistan.
Editorial appears in the New York Times on 6 December 1958, a day after his demise, in which he was described as a Citizen of the World.
In October 1998, to mark his birth centenary, the Government of Pakistan issued a postage stamp with his photograph under the series, Pioneers of Pakistan.
On 14 August 2003 President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf announced the conferment of Hilal-e-Imtiaz, posthumously to Patras Bokhari, the country's second highest Civilian Award.
Patras received his early education from Peshawar and in 1916 he moved from Islamia College Peshawar to join Government College Lahore. After completing his Masters in English he was appointed as lecturer at the same institution.
Patras Bokhari left Government College Lahore in 1925 to study at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University to complete a Tripos in English. Many years later, the Bokhari English Prize was established there in his honour.[2][3]
In 1927, he came back to Government College Lahore, and as a Professor remained there till 1939. Before the formation of Pakistan in 1947, he was the Director General of All India Radio. Being a Professor of English Literature he also served as the Principal of Government College Lahore from 1947 to 1950. The Urdu poets Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Noon Meem Rashid, were among his students. After the formation of Pakistan, he served as the first permanent representative of Pakistan in the United Nations from 1951--1954. From 1954-1958 he remained as the Under Secretary of the UN, Head of Information. He died during his diplomatic service and is buried in New York, USA.

Patras Carnival 2016 the largest groups
The Patras Carnival, Patrino karnavali is the largest event of its kind in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe. It has more than 180 years of history. The events begin on 17 January and last up to Clean Monday. The carnival of Patras is not a single event but a variety of events that includes balls, parades, hidden treasure hunt and the children's carnival amongst others. It climaxes in the last weekend of Carnival with the Saturday evening parade of carnival groups, the extravagant Sunday parade of floats and groups, and finally the ritual burning of the carnival king at the St. Nikolaos Street pier in the harbour of Patras. Its characteristics are spontaneity, improvisation, inspiration and volunteerism.
The soul of the carnival are the tens of thousands of carnivalists, from Patras, visitors and friends of the Patras Carnival, people of every age group who participate spontaneously in the carnival events; the official events and the hundreds of unofficial events such as carnival balls, masqued balls and parties at home, in neighbourhoods, clubs, cafes and restaurants. In recent decades a large part of the organisation is consistently undertaken by the Municipality of Patras through the Municipal Organisation for Cultural Development of Patras which supervises the carnival workshop, a unique space in Greece in which the giant floats of the carnival King and his entourage are built along with other structures that decorate the town during the duration of the carnival season. The carnival receives funding from the Ministry of Culture and other institutions. The official support however has come to reinforce a time honoured tradition and does not create something from scratch as with carnival events in other Greek municipalities.

Patras (Modern Greek: Πάτρα, Greek pronunciation: [ˈpatra], Classical Greek and Katharevousa: Πάτραι (pl.), Greek pronunciation: [ˈpatre], Latin: Patrae (pl.)) is Greece's third largest urban area and the regional capital of West Greece, located in northern Peloponnese, 215 km (134 mi) west of Athens. The city is built at the foothills of Mount Panachaikon, overlooking the Gulf of Patras.
The Patras Metropolitan Area is a conurbation of 222,460 inhabitants, while its urban area, contained within the Patras municipality, had a population of 202,757 (in 2001). The core settlement has a history spanning four millennia. In the Roman period it had become a cosmopolitan centre of the eastern Mediterranean whilst, according to Christian tradition, it was also the place of Saint Andrew's martyrdom.
Dubbed Greece's Gate to the West, Patras is a commercial hub, while its busy port is a nodal point for trade and communication with Italy and the rest of Western Europe. The city has two public universities and one Technological Institute, hosting a large student population and rendering Patras a major scientific centre with a field of excellence in technological education. The Rio-Antirio bridge connects Patras' easternmost suburb of Rio to the town of Antirrio, connecting the Peloponnese peninsula with mainland Greece.

Patras Carnival 2016 the largest groups The Patras Carnival, Patrino karnavali is the largest event of its kind in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe. It has more than 180 years of history. The events begin on 17 January and last up to Clean Monday. The carnival of Patras is not a single event but a variety of events that includes balls, parades, hidden treasure hunt and the children's carnival amongst others. It climaxes in the last weekend of Carnival with the Saturday evening parade of carnival groups, the extravagant Sunday parade of floats and groups, and finally the ritual burning of the carnival king at the St. Nikolaos Street pier in the harbour of Patras. Its characteristics are spontaneity, improvisation, inspiration and volunteerism. The soul of the carnival are the tens of thousands of carnivalists, from Patras, visitors and friends of the Patras Carnival, people of every age group who participate spontaneously in the carnival events; the official events and the hundreds of unofficial events such as carnival balls, masqued balls and parties at home, in neighbourhoods, clubs, cafes and restaurants. In recent decades a large part of the organisation is consistently undertaken by the Municipality of Patras through the Municipal Organisation for Cultural Development of Patras which supervises the carnival workshop, a unique space in Greece in which the giant floats of the carnival King and his entourage are built along with other structures that decorate the town during the duration of the carnival season. The carnival receives funding from the Ministry of Culture and other institutions. The official support however has come to reinforce a time honoured tradition and does not create something from scratch as with carnival events in other Greek municipalities. Die Brücke zählt mit 2.252 m zu den längsten Schrägseilbrücken der Welt. Der Golf wird hier häufig von starken Winden durchzogen, bietet nur sandigen Untergrund und liegt in einem seismisch aktiven Gebiet. Beim Bau der innovativen Brücke gelangten völlig neue Konstruktionsprinzipien zur Anwendung.
Einige Zeit stand Patras unter dem Einfluss der Venezianer, was noch heute im Stadtbild deutlich erkennbar ist. 1820 wurde sie durch ein Erdbeben in weiten Teilen zerstört. 1821 flammte hier der griechische Unabhängigkeitskampf auf. Dabei wurden die Osmanen auf die Zitadelle zurückgedrängt. Nach der Räumung gelang es den Osmanen die Stadt zurückzuerobern und komplett zu zerstörten.
Im Osten der Stadt in der Nähe des Hafens steht die griechisch-orthodoxe Andreaskirche - Agios Andreas. Sie ist die größte Kirche Griechenlands und eine der größten in Europa, mit Platz für 5.500 Besucher. Die zentrale Kuppel ist 50 m hoch.

In the east of the city near the harbor is the Greek Orthodox basilica of Saint Andrew - Agios Andreas. It is the largest church in Greece and one of the largest in Europe with place for 5,500 visitors. The central dome has a heigth of 164 ft.

Syed Ahmed Shah[1] (Urdu: سید احمد شاہ ) (commonly known as Patras Bokhari - پطرس بخاری) HI, (1 October 1898, Peshawar -- 5 December 1958, New York) was an Urdu humourist, educator, essayist, broadcaster and diplomat from Pakistan. He is best known for his humorous writings in Urdu literature.
His volume of essays, Patras Kay Mazameen - پطرس کے مظامین (Essays of Patras), published in 1927 is considered as an asset of Urdu humor.
He accompanied Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan on his first visit to the United States as the Prime Minister's speech writer.
In 1945 Patras Bokhari was awarded the Companion of the Indian Empire (CIE) Award.
Bokhari Auditorium on Government College University is named after him [1].
The Government of Tunisia, named a Road after him in Tunis, as a recognition for his contribution towards the freedom of Tunisia from French Colonial Rule in 1956.
There is also a road named after him in Islamabad, Federal Capital of Pakistan.
Editorial appears in the New York Times on 6 December 1958, a day after his demise, in which he was described as a Citizen of the World.
In October 1998, to mark his birth centenary, the Government of Pakistan issued a postage stamp with his photograph under the series, Pioneers of Pakistan.
On 14 August 2003 President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf announced the conferment of Hilal-e-Imtiaz, posthumously to Patras Bokhari, the country's second highest Civilian Award.
Patras received his early education from Peshawar and in 1916 he moved from Islamia College Peshawar to join Government College Lahore. After completing his Masters in English he was appointed as lecturer at the same institution.
Patras Bokhari left Government College Lahore in 1925 to study at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University to complete a Tripos in English. Many years later, the Bokhari English Prize was established there in his honour.[2][3]
In 1927, he came back to Government College Lahore, and as a Professor remained there till 1939. Before the formation of Pakistan in 1947, he was the Director General of All India Radio. Being a Professor of English Literature he also served as the Principal of Government College Lahore from 1947 to 1950. The Urdu poets Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Noon Meem Rashid, were among his students. After the formation of Pakistan, he served as the first permanent representative of Pakistan in the United Nations from 1951--1954. From 1954-1958 he remained as the Under Secretary of the UN, Head of Information. He died during his diplomatic service and is buried in New York, USA.

The Patras Carnival, Patrino karnavali is the largest event of its kind in Greece and one of the biggest in Europe. It has more than 180 years of history. The events begin on 17 January and last up to Clean Monday. The carnival of Patras is not a single event but a variety of events that includes balls, parades, hidden treasure hunt and the children's carnival amongst others. It climaxes in the last weekend of Carnival with the Saturday evening parade of carnival groups, the extravagant Sunday parade of floats and groups, and finally the ritual burning of the carnival king at the St. Nikolaos Street pier in the harbour of Patras. Its characteristics are spontaneity, improvisation, inspiration and volunteerism.
The soul of the carnival are the tens of thousands of carnivalists, from Patras, visitors and friends of the Patras Carnival, people of every age group who participate spontaneously in the carnival events; the official events and the hundreds of unofficial events such as carnival balls, masqued balls and parties at home, in neighbourhoods, clubs, cafes and restaurants. In recent decades a large part of the organisation is consistently undertaken by the Municipality of Patras through the Municipal Organisation for Cultural Development of Patras which supervises the carnival workshop, a unique space in Greece in which the giant floats of the carnival King and his entourage are built along with other structures that decorate the town during the duration of the carnival season. The carnival receives funding from the Ministry of Culture and other institutions. The official support however has come to reinforce a time honoured tradition and does not create something from scratch as with carnival events in other Greek municipalities.
