The album comprises nineteen tracks as well as two bonus tracks. Tiwa Savage named the album Once Upon a Time in order to portray the positive stories about her life. She wanted to motivate other upcoming artists by telling them that, once upon a time, she was a little girl in Isale Eko who dreamt of being a star. During an interview with Berklee College of Music's Brenda Pike, she hinted to possibly recording songs with the likes of Chuck Harmony, Warren Oak Felder, and So Sick (Da Grin). Moreover, she said the album will embody pop, R&B, soul, and yoruba sounds.

His eyes are set on Haruko, a beautiful jazz singer in a downtown nightclub; unbeknownst to anyone, Haruko has been moonlighting as "Haedanghwa" ("Rugosa Rose"), a cat burglar who has carried out a succession of high profile thefts. She is also pursued by Yamada, a colonel in the Japanese military police, who is jealous of Kanemura's affections towards her. The owner of the nightclub and his chef, Hee-bong, secretly work for the Korean independence movement.
