Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990.
In the late 1980s Nirvana established itself as part of the Seattle grunge scene, releasing its first album Bleach for the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. The band eventually came to develop a sound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses. After signing to major label DGC Records, Nirvana found unexpected success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the first single from the band's second album Nevermind (1991). Nirvana's sudden success widely popularized alternative rock as a whole, and as the band's frontman Cobain found himself referred to in the media as the "spokesman of a generation", with Nirvana being considered the "flagship band" of Generation X. Nirvana's third studio album In Utero (1993), challenged the group's audience, featuring an abrasive, less-mainstream sound. The album didn't match the sales figures of Nevermind but was still a commercial success.

Here is the long sought-after demo tape from Kurt Cobain’s pre-Nirvana band "Fecal Matter". In 1985, an 18-year-old Kurt Cobain formed a band called "Fecal Matter" with Greg Hokanson on drums and future Melvins drummer Dale Crover on bass. Using a 4-track tape recorder, they recorded just one demo, titled "Illiteracy Will Prevail". For the first time ever, the entire 58 minute demo has surfaced online. Not sure how. The album also produced three other successful singles: "Come as You Are", "Lithium", and "In Bloom". The Recording Industry Association of America has certified the album Diamond (over 10 million copies shipped), and the album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, the group hired engineer Steve Albini to record In Utero during a two-week period in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The music was recorded quickly with few studio embellishments, and the song lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and his band's newfound fame.
Upon release, In Utero entered the Billboard 200 chart at number one and received critical acclaim as a drastic departure from Nevermind. The record has been certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold 15 million copies worldwide.

Here is the long sought-after demo tape from Kurt Cobain’s pre-Nirvana band "Fecal Matter".
In 1985, an 18-year-old Kurt Cobain formed a band called "Fecal Matter" with Greg Hokanson on drums and future Melvins drummer Dale Crover on bass. Using a 4-track tape recorder, they recorded just one demo, titled "Illiteracy Will Prevail".
For the first time ever, the entire 58 minute demo has surfaced online. Not sure how. Did someone discovered a tape at a thrift store, and decide to share it with the world? For free??
Contains 13 abrasive punk songs with noisy endings, instrumentals, and riff tracks. And before the ending instrumentals, the last full song is an early version of “Downer” which appeared on Nirvana's "Bleach" album.
After Fecal Matter parted ways, Kurt Cobain passed around copies of this demo, and Krist Novoselic eventually heard it and liked it, and he and Cobain agreed to form a band. And Nirvana was born.
This is historic for Nirvana fans. You can really hear Kurt's style and ideas for future songs in this music.
After downloading this, I improved it using an equalizer, removing some of the hiss and muddy sound, while improving the highs a bit and pumping up the bottom end. I also cut out some of the long empty pauses between songs.
Unfortunately, there's no way to make this sound like a commercial release, so don't get your hopes up too much. At least it sounds much better than the original, in my opinion. If you've ever heard any audience-recorded live bootlegs, you shouldn't mind this too much.
Try to use good headphones, or listen through a good stereo.
