Hello! If you are reading this, you have probably committed an atrocity! Assuming that you are using Windows XP, it is a (mostly) stable operating system that is still used past its "expiration date." However, like many of the other stock programs that Microsoft ships with their OS, Windows Paint is not always the best choice when editing images to be posted on the internet. Much of the original quality of images can be lost when exporting directly from Windows Paint. It can still be avoided, however, by exporting/saving your image as a .PNG, and NOT a JPEG. This rule may not apply to Windows Vista or 7 as far as I know. Also not sure about Macs or Unix OSes.

RAW or JPEG what's better? In this video not only do I explain the difference, but I show you the difference between a JPEG and RAW file of the same shot as seen inside Lightroom.

This week on Let's Edit we look at the same sunset scene processed from a RAW file and from a JPEG file. To do the comparison what I've chosen to do here is process the RAW file as I normally would and then sync the Lightroom settings from that RAW file over to the JPEG file and then compare the results.
As expected there are some differences most notably in the areas that we recover from the shadows as well as the white balance being slight off in the JPEG image compared to that of the RAW file.
Does this solve the never ending question of which image formate is better? Probably not, but it's at least another argument added to the pile and with all the questions I get about this particular subject I felt obligated to answer it.

In computing, JPEG (
/ˈdʒeɪpɛɡ/ JAY-peg) is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital photography (image). The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.
JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web.[citation needed] These format variations are often not distinguished, and are simply called JPEG.
The term "JPEG" is an acronym for the Joint Photographic Experts Group which created the standard. The MIME media type for JPEG is image/jpeg (defined in RFC 1341), except in Internet Explorer, which provides a MIME type of image/pjpeg when uploading JPEG images.
It supports a maximum image size of 65535×65535.

For when someone posts a compressed image/uses Windows XP to save a jpeg...
Hello! If you are reading this, you have probably committed an atrocity! Assuming that you are using Windows XP, it is a (mostly) stable operating system that is still used past its "expiration date." However, like many of the other stock programs that Microsoft ships with their OS, Windows Paint is not always the best choice when editing images to be posted on the internet. Much of the original quality of images can be lost when exporting directly from Windows Paint. It can still be avoided, however, by exporting/saving your image as a .PNG, and NOT a JPEG. This rule may not apply to Windows Vista or 7 as far as I know. Also not sure about Macs or Unix OSes. -

RAW or JPEG what's better? In this video not only do I explain the difference, but I show you the difference between a JPEG and RAW file of the same shot as seen inside Lightroom. To do the comparison what I've chosen to do here is process the RAW file as I normally would and then sync the Lightroom settings from that RAW file over to the JPEG file and then compare the results. As expected there are some differences most notably in the areas that we recover from the shadows as well as the white balance being slight off in the JPEG image compared to that of the RAW file. RAW or JPEG what's better? In this video not only do I explain the difference, but I show you the difference between a JPEG and RAW file of the same shot as seen inside Lightroom.

This week on Let's Edit we look at the same sunset scene processed from a RAW file and from a JPEG file. To do the comparison what I've chosen to do here is process the RAW file as I normally would and then sync the Lightroom settings from that RAW file over to the JPEG file and then compare the results.
As expected there are some differences most notably in the areas that we recover from the shadows as well as the white balance being slight off in the JPEG image compared to that of the RAW file.
Does this solve the never ending question of which image formate is better? Probably not, but it's at least another argument added to the pile and with all the questions I get about this particular subject I felt obligated to answer it.

One of the most hotly contested debates in all of photography is "RAW vs JPEG". Over the past week on FroKnowsPhoto.com I have taken all the JPEG shooters reasons for not shooting RAW and turned it around into reasons why you should be shooting RAW.
(There will be a full length article on RAW vs JPEG coming soon)
I have done a lot of talking on this matter but now its time to do more showing. What you will see in these two videos are actual samples of RAW + JPEG that were captured at the same time going head to head. There are overexposed and underexposed images as well as the "I got it right in the camera" JPEG vs RAW corrected comparisons.
I have uploaded the sample images to my flickr account. In the video I mentioned I would upload the jpeg files as they came out of the camera. For comparison sake the files that I made corrections to to compare against the RAW have been exported from lightroom in full-res.
