Freedom 7 | Alan Shepard Launch - May 5, 1961
On May 5, 1961, Shepard piloted the Freedom 7 mission and became the second person, and the first American, to travel into space. He was launched by a Redstone rocket, and unlike Gagarin's one-hour orbital flight, Shepard stayed on a ballistic trajectory suborbital flight—a flight which carried him to an altitude of 116 statute miles and to a landing point 302 statute miles down the Atlantic Missi

http://RoyDawsonHomes.com Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. (November 18, 1923 -- July 21, 1998) was an American naval aviator, test pilot, flag officer, NASA astronaut, and businessman, who in 1961 became the second person, and the first American, to travel into space. This Mercury flight was designed to enter space, but not to achieve orbit. Ten years later, at age 47 the oldest astronaut in the program, Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 mission, piloting the lander to the most accurate landing of the Apollo missions. He became the fifth person to walk on the Moon, and the only astronaut of the Mercury Seven to walk on the Moon. During the mission, he hit two golf balls on the lunar surface. Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the United States Apollo program, and the third to land on the Moon. It was the last of the "H missions," targeted landings with two-day stays on the Moon with two lunar EVAs, or moonwalks.
Commander Alan Shepard, Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa, and Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell launched on their nine-day mission on January 31, 1971 at 4:04:02 pm local time after a 40 minute, 2 second delay due to launch site weather restrictions, the first such delay in the Apollo program.[2] Shepard and Mitchell made their lunar landing on February 5 in the Fra Mauro formation; this had originally been the target of the aborted Apollo 13 mission. During the two lunar EVAs, 42 kilograms (93 lb) of Moon rocks were collected and several surface experiments, including seismic studies, were performed. Shepard famously hit two golf balls on the lunar surface with a makeshift club he had brought from Earth. Shepard and Mitchell spent about 33 hours on the Moon, with about 9½ hours on EVA.

Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the United States Apollo program, and the third to land on the Moon. It was the last of the "H missions", targeted landings with two-day stays on the Moon with two lunar EVAs, or moonwalks.
Commander Alan Shepard, Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa, and Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell launched on their nine-day mission on January 31, 1971 at 4:04:02 pm local time after a 40 minute, 2 second delay due to launch site weather restrictions, the first such delay in the Apollo program. While Shepard and Mitchell were on the surface, Roosa remained in lunar orbit aboard the Command/Service Module, performing scientific experiments and photographing the Moon. He took several hundred seeds on the mission, many of which were germinated on return resulting in the so-called Moon trees. Shepard, Roosa, and Mitchell landed in the Pacific Ocean on February 9...
Launch and flight to lunar orbit
Apollo 14 launched during heavy cloud cover, and was quickly obscured by the clouds. However, NASA's long-range cameras, based 60 miles south in Vero Beach, had a clear shot of the remainder of the launch. Following the launch, Launch Control at Kennedy Space Center was visited by U.S. Vice President Spiro T. Agnew and Prince Juan Carlos of Spain.
At the beginning of the mission, the CSM Kitty Hawk had difficulty achieving capture and docking with the LM Antares. Repeated attempts to dock went on for 1 hour and 42 minutes, until it was suggested that pilot Roosa hold Kitty Hawk against Antares using its thrusters, then the docking probe would be retracted out of the way, hopefully triggering the docking latches. This attempt was successful, and no further docking problems were encountered during the mission.
Lunar descent
After separating from the command module in lunar orbit, the LM Antares also had two serious problems. First, the LM computer began getting an ABORT signal from a faulty switch...
A second problem occurred during the powered descent, when the LM radar altimeter failed to lock automatically onto the moon's surface... the unit successfully acquired a signal near 18,000 feet (5,500 m), again just in the nick of time.
After landing in the Fra Mauro formation—the destination for Apollo 13—Shepard and Mitchell took two moon walks, adding new seismic studies to the by now familiar Apollo experiment package, and using the modular equipment transporter (MET), a pull cart for carrying equipment and samples, referred to as a "lunar rickshaw". Roosa, meanwhile, took pictures from on board command module Kitty Hawk in lunar orbit...
Shepard smuggled on board a six iron golf club head which he could attach to the handle of a lunar excavation tool, and two golf balls, and took several one-handed swings (due to the limited flexibility of the EVA suit). He exuberantly exclaimed that the second ball went "miles and miles and miles" in the low lunar gravity, but later estimated the distance as 200 to 400 yards (180 to 370 m). Mitchell then used a lunar scoop handle as a javelin, creating the first 'Lunar Olympics'...

The 1971 Apollo 14 Mission to Fra Mauro, a lunar highland area, is highlighted in this video. The mission's primary goal was the collection of lunar rocks and soil samples and lunar exploration. The soil and rock sampling was for the geochronological determination of the Moon's evolution and its comparison with that of Earth. A remote data collection station was assembled on the Moon and left for continuous data collection and surface monitoring experiments. The Apollo 14 astronauts were Alan B. Shepard, Edgar D. May 5, 1961 9:34am EST The formal countdown for the preparation for launching MR-3 started on the day previous to launch day. The countdown was actually split into two parts because previous experience had shown that it was preferable to run the countdown in two shorter segments and allow the launch crew of both the spacecraft and the launch vehicle to obtain some rest before starting the final preparation. The countdown started at 8:30am EST on May 4, 1961. All operations proceeded normally and were completed ahead of schedule. A build-in hold of approximately 15 hours was called at T-6 hours 30 minutes. During this time the various pyrotechnics were installed in the spacecraft and the hydrogen peroxide system was serviced.
The countdown was resumed at T-6 hours 30 minutes at 11:30pm EST on May 4, 1961. A built-in hold of 1 hour had been previously agreed upon at T-2 hours 20 minutes. This hold was to assure that spacecraft preparations had been completed before the astronaut was transported to the pad. The countdown proceeded with only minor delays until T-2 hours 20 minutes. At this time, final preparation of the spacecraft was conducted and the astronaut was apprised of the continuance of the countdown and transported to the Pad. The countdown was continued after the hold at T-2 hours 20 minutes and, except for some minor holds, the countdown continued until T-15 minutes. At this time it was determined that photographic coverage of the launch and flight could not be obtained because of low clouds near the launch area. Weather forecasters predicted that visibility would improve rapidly within 20 to 45 min. During this time, one of the 400hz power inverters to the launch vehicle had regulation problems. The count was recycled to the T-35 minute and holding mark and the count picked up 86 minutes later after the replacement of the inverter.
Again at T-15 minutes it was necessary to hold the count again to make a final check of the real-time trajectory computer. The countdown then picked up and proceeded until liftoff at 9:34am EST on 5/5/1961.
wn.com/Launch Of Alan Shepard On Mercury Redstone 3 Freedom 7

The second half of Dennis Miller's radio show opening seems to be widely mis-attributed to Alan Shepard. All I can find on the 'net to support this belief is this clip from the film "The Right Stuff". Having wet his pants while waiting for the launch of the Redstone rocket on his Freedom 7 mission, and becoming frustrated with the mission specialists' concerns and delays, Shepard, the commander on the solo flight, barks "All right, I'm cooler than you are. Why don't you fix your little problems and light this candle?"
Gordon Cooper, who served as capsule communicator (CAPCOM), responded, "He's right! Let's light this candle."

10 Unexpected Firsts Left Out Of The History Books
The easiest way to get into the history books is to do something first. That’s why everyone on Earth knows the name of Yuri Gagarin, but only space nerds know of Alan Shepard. Timing is crucial. Or is it? Look beyond what you learn in 10th-grade history, and you’ll find a wealth of people, things, and events that were the earliest of their kind yet remain curiously unrecognized today. In some cases, this is due to new evidence only recently coming to light. In other cases, it’s because we straight-up forgot about them.

NASA Documentary / ESA INFO: This documentary starts with clips of the Freedom 7 mission, launched on May 5th 1961, during which Alan Sheppard became America's first man in space. Ten years later, Sheppard commands the Apollo 14 mission to the Fra Mauro region of the moon, launched by a Saturn 5 rocket on January 31st 1971.
The film contains highlights of the mission, including: launch and control room; in-flight footage of lunar probe docking with Kittihawk orbiter, successful on the 6th attempt; in-flight picture of the moon from the orbiter; Earth testing of the lunar module, and general shots of the monitoring of the mission; the lunar module descends, while 'abort' signal is registered on Earth; footage from module of landing [after computer is re-programmed to ignore the signal]; astronauts disembark onto surface of the Moon, American flag is pitched; erection of automated scientific laboratory; stills of astronauts exploring moon's surface; view from interior as module lifts off; in-flight footage of crew, zero gravity experiment.
NASA INFO: Mission Highlights
Apollo 14 launched at 4:03 p.m. EST. At approximately 3:41 p.m. ground elapsed time, or GET, difficulties were experienced in docking with the lunar module, or LM, and six attempts were required before a "hard dock" was achieved. An in-flight televised inspection of the docking mechanism revealed no apparent reason for the malfunction and the system appeared to be functioning normally.
Prior to the powered descent initiation, or PDI, for the Antares landing, a short in the LM computer abort switch was discovered, which could have triggered an undesired abort during the LM's descent. On Feb. 5, Antares made the most precise landing to date, approximately 87 feet from the targeted landing point. The landing point coordinates were 3 degrees, 40 minutes, 27 seconds south and 17 degrees, 27 minutes, 58 seconds west, midway between the Doublet and Triplet craters in the hilly uplands of the Fra Mauro crater, and about 110 miles east of the Apollo 12 landing site.
Due to communications system problems, the first period of extra vehicular activity, or EVA, began almost one hour later than scheduled with Commander Alan Shepard setting foot on the lunar surface at 114 hours, 31 minutes GET. The first of the two EVA periods included ALSEP deployment and lasted four hours, 49 minutes.
The second EVA on Feb. 6 began when the LM egress hatch was opened at 4:15 a.m. EST. During this EVA, Shepard and Edgar Mitchell moved more than half a mile from their LM, conducting selenological investigations, collecting samples and attempting to reach the rim of Cone crater, approximately 300 feet above the landing site. NASA personnel monitoring the EVA estimate that the two astronauts were within 50 to 75 meters of the crater rim when they were advised by mission control to collect samples at that spot and begin their traverse back to the LM. The second EVA lasted four hours, 35 minutes, resulting in a new mark for EVA time by a lunar landing crew: nine hours, 24 minutes. Shepard set a new distance-traveled record on the lunar surface of approximately 9,000 feet.
During the two traverses, the astronauts collected 94 pounds of rocks and soil for return to Earth. The samples were scheduled to go to 187 scientific teams in the United States, as well as 14 other countries for study and analysis.
Orbital science activities were conducted by Stuart Roosa during the lunar surface activities period. He experienced some difficulties with the high-resolution, motion-compensating Hycon Lunar Topographic Camera while attempting to photograph the Descartes area, the landing site planned for Apollo 16.
The liftoff of Antares from the lunar surface took place precisely on schedule. Rendezvous and docking occured only two minutes later than scheduled. The command module Kitty Hawk splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean at 4:05 p.m. EST Feb. 9, exactly nine days and two minutes after launch. The actual landing point was only 1.02 nautical miles off its targeted point of about 765 nautical miles south of Samoa, and four miles from the prime recovery ship, the USS New Orleans. The mission duration from liftoff to splashdown was 216 hours, two minutes.

This is the Marching Astros performance at the University of Illinois marching band competition! Their show was titled Different Trains featuring the following tunes:
The Great Locomotive Chase
Traingels (a melody by the band Train with songs 'Calling All Angels' and 'Angels in Blue Jeans')
Chat-A-Van (a jazz melody of 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' and 'Caravan')
How to Train Your Dragon
**************************************************
It was really rainy when we were there so the field was very wet so if you see some people starting to slip (no one fell though), that's why. That's also why the camera was shaky at times because the rain was causing my sister (who was holding the camera) to shake a bit. This was my last performance ever and I thought we did a great performance and it was an amazing way to end my marching band season.

The countdown started at 8:30 a.m. EST on May 4, 1961... A built-in hold of approximately 15 hours was called at T - 6 hours 30 minutes (where T indicates the time of predicted lift-off). During this time the various pyrotechnics were installed in the spacecraft and the hydrogen peroxide system was serviced.
The countdown was resumed... at 11:30 p.m. EST on May 4, 1961...
The countdown was continued after the hold at T - 2 hours 20 minutes and, except for some minor holds, which probably resulted from all concerned being extremely careful during the insertion of the Astronaut, the countdown continued until T - 15 minutes. At this time it was determined that photographic coverage of the launch and flight could not be obtained because of low clouds which were being blown into the launch area. The weather forecaster predicted that the visibility would improve rapidly within the next 30 to 45 minutes, and it was decided to hold the launch until more favorable camera coverage could be obtained. During this hold it was determined that one of the inverters supplying 400-cycle power to the launch vehicle was not regulating properly. The test conductor of the launch vehicle felt that this inverter should be replaced and this replacement would require a hold of approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. At this time the Astronaut was consulted and he indicated that he was fine; the aeromedical people agreed that the Astronaut was in good condition and, therefore, it was decided to continue on and make a replacement of the inverter and pick up the count as soon thereafter as possible. The countdown was recycled to T - 35 minutes and resumed after a hold of 86 minutes. Again at T - 13 minutes it was necessary to hold the launch countdown in order to make a final check of the computer being used to give real time trajectory information and impact prediction. After this point, the countdown proceeded smoothly through to the time of lift-off. The total hold time during the launch countdown was 2 hours 34 minutes...
The liftoff occurred at 934 am EST on May 5, 1961.
The first critical time after lift-off occurred at 1 minute 24 seconds. At this time the spacecraft and launch vehicle passed through the point of maximum dynamic pressure (that is, the point in the exit trajectory at which the spacecraft and launch vehicle are subjected to the largest aerodynamic load)...
The shutdown of the launch-vehicle engine occurred at T + 2 minutes 22 seconds, and, at the same time, a signal was to be given to the spacecraft to separate the escape tower. Spacecraft separation occurred 10 seconds later by means of the separation of the Marman clamp and the firing of the posigrade rockets. Both of these operations were to be manually initiated by the Astronaut if the automatic systems had failed. This backup action by the Astronaut was to be taken in the initiation of all major spacecraft events. After a 5-second period during which the motions of the spacecraft were damped, a turnaround maneuver was initiated in which the spacecraft was yawed 180° so that the spacecraft was proceeding with the heat shield forward. The pitch attitude was also regulated to an attitude of 14 1/2 degress from the local horizontal. At T + 3 minutes 10 seconds, the Astronaut turned off the automatic control systems and took over manual control of the spacecraft attitude...
Thirty seconds after initiation of the retrofire sequence, firing of the three retrorockets took place. Each rocket was to burn for approxhnately 10 seconds and they were fired sequentially at 5-second intervals. At T + 6 minutes 14 seconds (60 seconds after the firing of the first retrorocket), the retropackage jettisoned. It should be pointed out that, although firing of the retrorockets would have little effect on the Redstone suborbital flight, this same procedure would be followed during an orbital flight...
The recovery operations for this flight were as good as could ever be hoped for in any Mercury operation...

The Golden Anniversary of the flight of the first American in space was commemorated with a special ceremony at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Complex 5/6 blockhouse near NASA's Kennedy Space Center. That's where, on May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr., began his historic, 15-minute mission aboard his Freedom 7 capsule.
Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter and members of the Shepard family were joined by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, former astronaut Bob Cabana and more than 200 workers from the original Mercury program in celebrating the historic anniversary. The event included a re-creation of Shepard's flight and recovery, as well as a tribute to his contributions as a moonwalker on the Apollo 14 lunar mission.
