Fostering Special Needs: A Special Adoption Story
Twenty years ago, single mom Pat McCollum decided she wanted to help children in difficult circumstances by becoming a foster and adoptive parent. In 1998, Pat faced her biggest challenge when a foster agency called about a seven-year-old boy who had barely survived a fire as a baby and was in need of a home.
When DJ arrived on Pat’s doorstep, one leg was only a stump, he had no speech and almost

When thinking about their future family, Adam and Karen Owens always wanted children. They never dreamt that there story would end in such a unique, large family. Watch their adoption story and how tragically losing their second child Gavin, changed their outlook on life.
Days after returning home with newborn Gavin, the couple realized that something wasn’t right. Gavin was diagnosed with a terminal case of mitochondrial disease. Adam and Karen were devasted to lost their son in November of 2009.
Instead of giving up after this loss, the couple looked into child adoption within their community foster system.
When Adam, Karen and their daughter met a young girl with special medical needs, “it just clicked that this child has no family and that we had to be that family.”
This first adoption made them realize they could continue to build their family in a way that brought both challenges and boundless joy. They are now parents to six (4 adopted) children: Madison, Siah, Angela, Jayden, Harper and their son, Gavin.
Although the Owens family may appear different on the outside, they are just like any other family. Karen has learned that it’s okay to not be comfortable.
Karen says it best when she describes how they found a new look at life after losing their son: “In the moments where I was most uncomfortable and the most scared, the most beautiful things happen.”
Their tips for adopting children in foster care?
Make sure to find a good adoption agency and be open about what you’re willing to accept. A good adoption agency will make sure that your home is a good fit & the parents-to-be have the skills and means to take care of the kids.
Learn more about the Owens and how their inspiring story tells us that dark times don’t mean everything is over – it can be another chapter in your story.

When DJ arrived on Pat’s doorstep, one leg was only a stump, he had no speech and almost no hearing, and his body was almost entirely covered in burn scars. Pat worried she wasn’t up to caring for a child with such profound special needs, but in a few days DJ captured her heart and she became his greatest advocate.
DJ was 21 years old at the time of filming and surrounded by family and a community who care for him. He is learning to walk with new prosthetic legs. He spends time every day at Sonny Spot Too, a day program that provides services to people with disabilities and special needs. Sonny Spot Too has become a way of life and extended family for its clients. They see the value in DJ and work hard to help him reach his highest potential.
Fostering or adopting a child with severe disabilities can be intimidating, people like Pat McCollum are shining examples that anyone can rise to the challenge. (Season 6, Episode 12)

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Kids with special needs are marginalized in our communities, and we are doing it with the best of intentions. Inclusion expert Torrie Dunlap shares why we need to change our thinking when it comes to special needs.
In 1998 Torrie Dunlap’s worldview changed when she taught a theater class for children that included a boy with Down syndrome. Through this experience Torrie found her life’s purpose and developed a vision for a world where everyone feels a sense of belonging in their community. This is also how she came to know the work of Kids Included Together, a non-profit where she started as a volunteer and today is the Chief Executive Officer. Kids Included Together (KIT) works nationally and internationally to help child and youth programs engage children with and without disabilities.
Torrie is a nationally-recognized thought leader in the field of inclusive education and recreation. She has delivered keynotes and trainings on inclusion around the United States and in Europe, and she has been published in textbooks, professional journals and trade magazines. She is a regular contributor to the advocacy website Think Inclusive and is a frequent guest host on the online radio program The Inclusive Classroom.
Torrie supports other organizations that promote inclusion by serving on the board (Vice Chair of Unified Theater in Hartford, CT), or as an advisor (Adaptive Design Association in NYC and the youth-led inclusion campaign I Am Norm). At KIT Torrie leads a staff team of 25 “Inclusionistas” who teach over 25,000 people a year, changing attitudes toward disability and providing best practices training using a blend of live workshops and innovative technology.
Torrie is a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance and in 2013 was selected as a Social Innovation Fellow at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

Sunday September 13, 2015 Having no nursing on Sundays means a very busy day for this special needs Mother.
Daniels day from start to finish requires alot of medical intervention and just completely tending to him in every way. People don't often understand how completely consuming it is, but he needs me 100% of the time. So I tried to capture a little bit of what goes on, and of course every day is different.
I was gifted with a miracle, and a visit from some deer too. Feeling 100% better and much more like myself, I found myself giggling and singing all day Sunday. I know people have been concerned, and I want you to know that I really do feel better.
This is a journey. Life with a special needs child in your care is quite different than life with a completely normal independent non medically fragile child. It is, however, a very beautiful life.
Please scroll down for more information on this channel. This channel is dedicated to the care of my son, and to spreading hope for other people suffering....that there is always hope.
I love you all. So many new friends!!!

About my channel.......
My middle son, Daniel John Hasselberger was born on November 22, 1997, with a rare brain deformity called Polymicrogyria. The deformity happened due to a virus called CMV, or cytomegalovirus. He has seizures, respiratory problems, can only eat by g tube, is in a wheelchair, can not speak, and has had countless surgeries and hospitalizations over his 17 years. We are a family of 5 from Sandy Hook, CT and this is our journey.
Every day is full of new things that we don’t expect. I am Julie, Daniel’s Mom. I left my full time career as an HR Director 11 years ago because Daniel needed me. The struggle, the sacrifices, the sibling love, and miracle after miracle.
Why did I create this channel? For support, to help other families dealing with the same diagnosis, to help me cope with depression and isolation, etc.

Everybody Needs a Soul
“I believe that when you feel it’s real there’s no denying the feeling of realness that’s experienced in all seriousness… my girl obviously knows that a soul is everything to appreciate and nothing to squander especially when everything gets as clean as a whistle and sharp as a thistle”
When you look at me… I’m sure you see somebody… I’m pretty sure you do even when things get pretty ugly… you like to take a gander… you like to take a glimpse… you like to take a hold of people like a monkey wrench… your soul belongs to you… and it responds to you… the way you might’ve smiled cause someone wrote a song for you… you write your songs for us… it’s like a do-si-do… it’s like we’re alternating faces on a totem pole… when you’re feeling shaken… there’s syrup for your bacon… and just in case you’re asking you can “Channing” on my “Tatem”… when I look at you… I see a “Puss in Boots”… as if you didn’t know you’re sweet like fucking juicy fruit… I know you’ve had it rough… and dishwashers do too… but in a lot of ways you’ve had it made like “Scooby Doo”… I’m feeling more excited as the mystery unravels… but deep inside I know you wouldn’t kiss a pink flamingo...
“You’ve got to have a soul… that’s just the way it goes… like snowmen in the winter need a fucking carrot nose… you’ve got to have a soul… that’s just the simple truth… it’s obvious without it you’ll be hardly living proof” [hook x2]
When you look at me… I’m sure you see somebody… whether it’s a girl like “Wednesday” or a boy like “Pugsley”… even when you’re feeling morbid you’re a precious orchid… the type to grow on me and let me draw her as a portrait… soulfully it’s like you’re Ali G without a kiss… you’re blending into Hip-Hop and I hope you’re feeling bliss… it’s not as though you’re very much offensive with your booty… any more than “Robbie Alomar” spewing a loogie… there has to be a place where you can feel a little grace… there has to be a place in which your soul is feeling safe… if everybody got together for your viewing pleasure… and shook their junk for you I’m sure you’d feel a little better… I know you’re tough enough… I know you’re doing fine… I know as far as twerking that you’ll one day draw the line… as it stands it looks as though you’ve sought a bitter outcome… but keep in mind that all you needs a solid comeback album…
“You’ve got to have a soul… that’s just the way it goes… like snowmen in the winter need a fucking carrot nose… you’ve got to have a soul… that’s just the simple truth… it’s obvious without it you’ll be hardly living proof” [hook x2]
When you look at me… I’m sure you see somebody… maybe “Dudley Do-Right” with his handprint on “Jumanji”… even if you wound up in the jungle all alone… I hope you know that Jane and Tarzan find that place their home… and everybody’s pleased to see you always working hard… like military personnel who get the purple star… you’re doing pretty good… you’re making people happy… like vigilantes chasing purse snatchers throughout an alley… you’re acting fairly brave… even when you’re scared… and even when your public thinks you’re wrecked beyond repair… if only you could take a moment to reflect a little… you’ll maybe realize that every “Thun” should have a “Kicko”… and you can be as nice to gaze at as an Ewok village… when you’re acting like another’s life is as fulfilling… I hope you get to be as soulful as you ought to be… and giggle if you’re ever inside my proximity…
“You’ve got to have a soul… that’s just the way it goes… like snowmen in the winter need a fucking carrot nose… you’ve got to have a soul… that’s just the simple truth… it’s obvious without it you’ll be hardly living proof” [hook x4]

Rotary Kilkenny began in 1979 and is an active group of professional men and women who want to use their skills to ‘give back’ to the community, locally, nationally and internationally and at the same time network and develop better understanding of others in our community.
We fundraise, help youth development, host topical and high profile speakers and provide a means to network. Rotary is the largest voluntary service organisations in the world with 1.2 million members.
Our slogan is ‘Putting service before self’
Locally Rotary is probably best known for running the Remembrance Tree collections in aid of the Carlow-Kilkenny Homecare team and have raised nearly €100,000 for that noble cause to date.
Rotary also runs a Youth Leadership competition running interviews in participating local secondary schools to select students showing promising communication and leadership skills many of whom go onto represent Ireland at a youth parliament held in the EU Parliament chamber in Strasbourg.
Rotary Kilkenny have supported Kilkenny Relay for Life from the start, entering a relay team since the start of this event in Kilkenny raising money for The Irish Cancer Society.
Internationally Rotary is the leading voluntary service organisation involved in the fight to eradicate Polio Globally.
