LONDON — A state-of-the-art British research ship could be named “Boaty McBoatface” after an online poll was conducted to help find a name for the vessel.
The UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) launched the poll for name suggestions last week and, so far, “Boaty McBoatface” is pulling a Trump and running away with the vote.
According to ITV News, Boaty McBoatface was put forward by NERC Communication Manager, James Hand. Despite calling it “a brilliant name,” he’s now backing the name of renowned British documentarian David Attenborough for the vessel’s name.
The poll was created under the hashtag #NameOurShip last Thursday and thousands have offered their ideas, reported ITV News. Some of the most popular include; “Its bloody cold here” and “Usain Boat”. Other suggestions include “Sir Fartsalot” and “Ice Ice Baby”.
The online poll closes April 16 and, perhaps sadly, is suggestion only

The Natural Environment Research Council or NERC foolishly asked the internet to name its new research vessel, a $300 million Arctic boat and the public came up with..."Boaty McBoatface". That's right this state of the art ship would have to grin and bear the most ridiculous sea name in history if internet voters have their way. The vote inspired a twitter phenom, hashtag "Boaty McBoatface" and even shut down the NERC's website for a time with excessive traffic. The last day to vote will be April 16th, and so far the second place name Henry Worsley, an arctic explorer, is about 18000 votes behind. Boaty is set to sail to the Antarctic in 2019

RRS Boaty McBoatface is leading the vote to become the name of the UK’s new $287 million polar research vessel after the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) opened suggestions on what to call the vessel up to the public via an Internet poll. A new generation of pollution monitors developed by the University of Cambridge, together with academic and industrial partners, could help gather the evidence essential to tackle poor air quality.
Air pollution is the world’s largest single environmental health risk, causing one in every eight deaths according to figures released in 2014 by the World Health Organization. The new sensors are small enough to carry, stable enough to be installed as static detectors long-term around a city, and sensitive enough to detect small changes in air quality on a street-by-street basis.

The natural environment encompasses all living and non-living things occurring naturally on Earth or some region thereof. It is an environment that encompasses the interaction of all living species. The concept of the natural environment can be distinguished by components:
The natural environment is contrasted with the built environment, which comprises the areas and components that are strongly influenced by humans. A geographical area is regarded as a natural environment.
It is difficult to find absolutely natural environments, and it is common that the naturalness varies in a continuum, from ideally 100% natural in one extreme to 0% natural in the other. More precisely, we can consider the different aspects or components of an environment, and see that their degree of naturalness is not uniform. If, for instance, we take an agricultural field, and consider the mineralogic composition and the structure of its soil, we will find that whereas the first is quite similar to that of an undisturbed forest soil, the structure is quite different.

The UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) launched the poll for name suggestions last week and, so far, “Boaty McBoatface” is pulling a Trump and running away with the vote.
According to ITV News, Boaty McBoatface was put forward by NERC Communication Manager, James Hand. Despite calling it “a brilliant name,” he’s now backing the name of renowned British documentarian David Attenborough for the vessel’s name.
The poll was created under the hashtag #NameOurShip last Thursday and thousands have offered their ideas, reported ITV News. Some of the most popular include; “Its bloody cold here” and “Usain Boat”. Other suggestions include “Sir Fartsalot” and “Ice Ice Baby”.
The online poll closes April 16 and, perhaps sadly, is suggestion only

The Natural Environment Research Council (Nerc), which manages British polar science, says it is looking for something inspirational - something that will exemplify the ship's work
For example, the German polar research vessel is called Polarstern, or Pole Star; and the ship used regularly by Australian Antarctic scientists is called Aurora Australis - another name for the Southern Lights
"Nerc's new ship will help put the UK at the cutting edge of polar research," said council chief executive, Prof Duncan Wingham
The introduction of the new ship does mean the UK will be reducing its polar fleet from two to one vessel

Suggestions ranged from the inspirational ("Henry Worsley," the former British Army officer and explorer who died in January trying to cross Antarctica without aid) to the literal ("It's bloody cold out here") and the snarky ("Notthetitanic"), but the current front-runner is "Boaty McBoatface," reports the Independent. The name has garnered 21,000-plus votes, nearly 10 times as many as the second highest "Henry Worsley." The NERC has set April 16 as a deadline and noted that it will choose the name.
Meanwhile, the communications manager who submitted Boaty McBoatface has since apologized, though it's not likely to disappear — it's even got its own Twitter hashtag. Still, in the realm of Internet silliness and snark, things could be worse. People once responded to Mountain Dew's call for a new flavor name with "Hitler did nothing wrong" and "Fapple," notes Mashable. Space Weather: a Down to Earth Hazard from Space
Presentation about Space Weather given to staff at UK Research Councils HQ at Polaris House in Swindon on 11 December 2014. This focuses mainly on the terrestrial end of Space Weather as the talk was hosted by the Natural Environment Research Council. Tanzanian Drilling Project
A talk on the 'Tanzanian Drilling Project', delivered by Bridget Wade at the 2012 Lyell Meeting held at the Geological Society on 29 March. The 'Tanzania Drilling Project' (TDP) is an informal name for a programme of shallow coring in marine sediments that are now exposed on land in the coastal basins of Tanzania. The main objective is to provide palaeoclimate and micropalaeontological records. In successive field seasons from 2002-2009, over 40 holes were drilled using small truck-mounted rigs, recovering sediments from Aptian to Oligocene age. A talk on the 'Tanzanian Drilling Project', delivered by Bridget Wade at the 2012 Lyell Meeting held at the Geological Society on 29 March.
The 'Tanzania Drilling Project' (TDP) is an informal name for a programme of shallow coring in marine sediments that are now exposed on land in the coastal basins of Tanzania. The main objective is to provide palaeoclimate and micropalaeontological records. In successive field seasons from 2002-2009, over 40 holes were drilled using small truck-mounted rigs, recovering sediments from Aptian to Oligocene age. The main funding stream was through a series standard research grants from Natural Environment Research Council (UK) and National Science Foundation (USA), with additional support from the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation, Enterprise Ireland, and individuals (e.g. via fellowship research funding). TDP has involved scientists from the UK, USA, Tanzania, Ireland and Netherlands. Over 30 peer-reviewed papers have been published so far.

Adoption of the COP21 agreement suggests that nations will invest in infrastructures for renewable energy sources. These changes will require vast amounts of metals and minerals. Regardless of whether known supplies are enough to meet demand in the near future, efforts must be made now to forestall unpredictable yet inevitable supply shortages that would dramatically impact the building of additional generation and distribution capacity. But in response to the current downturn in commodity prices, the global mining industry is downsizing and reducing investment in new exploration, putting at risk future security of supply.
The new adaptive technologies needed to tackle climate change depend on extraction of minerals and metals. An interdisciplinary group supported by IUGS, ICSU and UNESCO proposes actions to avert the looming minerals crisis that is developing in the context of current recycling capacity and exploration trends.
Our immediate goal is to stimulate discussion of supply constraints using available data on mineral reserves, focusing on primary resources over the next two to three decades when the availability of metals for recycling will remain low.
We advocate establishing an international panel (under the auspices of the United Nations) to monitor consumption and production of mineral resources for future generations.

Donald L. Hey is president and co-founder of The Wetlands Initiative, Inc. He also is director of Wetlands Research, Inc., which manages the Des Plaines River Wetlands Demonstration Project in Lake County, Illinois, one of the nation's first large-scale wetland restoration projects. He formerly was president of Hey & Associates, an environmental services consulting firm.
He received a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla, an M.S. in water resources engineering from Kansas University, and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Northwestern University. His research interests focus on the restoration of river and wetland systems and the development of low-cost management programs for sustaining natural aquatic ecosystems.
Dr. Hey has served on a number of committees and editorial boards: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board Committee of Integrated Nitrogen (2007-2009); the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Assessment Plan; Technical Proposal Evaluation Committee, Everglades National Park, National Park Service; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board; the International Joint Commission, Levels Reference Study; the National Research Council, Committee on the Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems; the Illinois Department of Conservation, Wetland Advisory Council; Ecological Engineering and Restoration Ecology. He is co-author of A Case for Wetland Restoration (Wiley & Sons, 1999) and numerous articles.

Samples returned by the Apollo missions have somewhat confounded scientists' ideas about how the Moon was formed. Its presence is thought to be due to another planet colliding with the early Earth, causing an extraordinary giant impact, and in the process, forming the Moon. But, analysing chemicals in Apollo's rock samples has revealed that the Moon could be much more similar to Earth itself than any potential impactor. Professor Alex Halliday discusses the most up-to-date theories and evidence on this topic.

For anyone who has ever pondered life on other planets, astronomer, physicist, and author Dr. Hugh Ross traverses the solar system and blasts past distant galaxies to the time when light was born to show just how unique mankind is in the universe. In stark contrast to the few parameters though needed for life on other planets and the resulting excitement of Carl Sagan and other like-minded astronomers at the prospect of finding a life-sustaining planet situated near a particularly large star, decades of scientific research have revealed that the list of elements required (200 at the time this movie was made, now 850 known elements) to nurture life in the vast reaches of outer space is no less than staggering.
ABOUT DR. HUGH ROSS:
Received a degree in physics from the University of British Columbia and a National Research Council of Canada fellowship, Hugh earned a PhD in astronomy from the University of Toronto. For several years he continued his research on quasars and galaxies as a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology.
In 2012, Hugh, together with Dr. Gerald Schroeder, received the Ide P. Trotter Prize presented by Texas A&M; University in recognition of his work in demonstrating connections between science and religion.
Dr. Ross has worked on projects at Cal-Tech, MIT, Yale, Fermi Labs, and JPL. He is the founder of the "Reasons to Believe" Organization.
