Improving product safety and life requires knowledge of failure mechanisms of the materials used and the loads typically experienced by the structures during service. As physical testing to account for multiple design variables can be very time and resource consuming, robust solutions that are capable of simulating the complex physics of crack initiation and crack propagation is highly beneficial to engineers.
This presentation will give an overview of failure models available in Marc, and how they can be used to gain insight into product behavior under various loading scenarios. Topics like delamination, crack initiation and crack propagation will be covered with a special focus on high cycle fatigue in 3D crack propagation.

Fatigue limit
Fatigue limit, endurance limit, and fatigue strength are all expressions used to describe a property of materials: the amplitude (or range) of cyclic stress that can be applied to the material without causing fatigue failure. Ferrous alloys and titanium alloys have a distinct limit, an amplitude below which there appears to be no number of cycles that will cause failure. Other structural metals su

Depending on the type of load being applied, you may prefer to group these loads separately rather than put them into a single load set. In addition you may want to analyze certain loads but not others.
In this example, you are working with a gearbox component. In the Model Tree you can see three loads. As is the case with any fatigue analysis, you need to define a material that has a fatigue criteria set. Right-click Material Assignment1 and select Edit Definition to open the Material Assignment dialog box to see what material is assigned. Click More to open the Material dialog box. Under Materials in Model select the material. In this example select GRAY_CAST_IRON and click OK to open the Material Definition dialog box. In the Fatigue area of this dialog box define a Unified Material Law (UML). In the Material Type box, Other, is added to the list of materials. In the Surface Finish box, the list of finishes is updated. When working with a model from an earlier release, a conversion is required. If this is the case, a warning appears indicating that some of the surface finishes defined in the model are no longer supported. You are prompted to provide the Failure Strength Reduction Factor to take these finishes into account. After the materials are defined and applied click OK to close multiple dialog boxes.
The first analysis you need to run is the static analysis. Click Analyses and Studies to open Analyses and Design Studies dialog box. For this example, you can see that the analysis, Gearbox, is completed. Click File ▶ New Fatigue to run a fatigue analysis. In the Fatigue Analysis Definition dialog box there are some changes. The Previous Analysis tab is first, followed by the Load History tab. On the Previous Analysis tab, you can see that the load sets from the model are listed. For this example, select the three load sets and click the Load History tab where you define the Desired Endurance. For this example, Desired Endurance is set to 2e+5. Next, define the load criteria for each load set. In the Load Set box, select the load. Select an Amplitude Type such as Zero-Peak. Complete this operation for each of the load sets in the model. Click OK and then from the Analyses and Design Studies dialog box, run the analysis. After the analysis is completed, you can view the results. In this example you review the fatigue fringe plot for Log Life. In the Results window you can see that most of the model has a Log Life of 20. This means ten to the power of twenty cycles will pass before the crack initiates. You can review the model and see areas that have a lower defined Log Life. To get a better perspective, you can select in the legend and type a value such as 15. This redistributes the levels from first to last so that you can get a better idea of where there are potential issues in the model.
This enhancement improves your ability to analyze a model with multiple loads and to determine the life expectancy of your design.

Other structural metals such as aluminium and copper, do not have a distinct limit and will eventually fail even from small stress amplitudes. In these cases, a number of cycles (usually 107) is chosen to represent the fatigue life of the material.

This is a low cycle fatigue test conducted with constant inelastic curvature / strain cycles. The coupon is a 3" wide x 24" long piece of flange material cut from a W24x62 beam. The coupon has a Hilti powder actuated fastener installed at the center of the specimen. The specimen also has a smooth circular notch cut on both sides with radius equal to 1". This notch, although not visible in the video, increases the stress triaxiality and therefore causes the fracture to initiate at the center of the specimen.

Worst Engineering Disasters - Engineering Fails Documentary.
In mechanical design, most failures are due to time-varying, or dynamic, loads that are applied to a system. This phenomena is known as fatigue failure. Fatigue is known as the weakness in a material due to variations of stress that are repeatedly applied to said material. For example, when stretching a rubber band to a certain length without breaking it (i.e. not surpassing the yield stress of the rubber band) the rubber band will return to its original form after release; however, repeatedly stretching the rubber band with the same amount of force thousands of times would create micro-cracks in the band which would lead to the rubber band being snapped. The same principle is applied to mechanical materials such as metals.

[00:15]
Although I'd suspected it for a long time, it took a lot of work and a lot of money to find out I had multiple dental infections. For some people, this could be a huge contributor to their symptoms, and seems to be generally overlooked - especially by dentists.
[00:52]
Root canals
While researching chronic diseases I kept hearing about the dangers of root canals and until recently I ignored what I'd heard (specifically because my teeth were free of pain and discomfort). I had a root canal around 6 years ago and from what I remember it went very well and I had no problems after the surgery. I recently decided I wanted to be completely sure it wasn't infected so I traveled far away to a dentist who specializes in root canal extractions. After the initial visit I was told that the root canal looked perfect on the scans and that there was no sign of infection.
A few months later I decided I wanted a second opinion. They performed a scan and found a massive infection around the root canal. Why would one dentist not find anything and another easily find the infection? Because this one used 3D technology. They were able to visually scan all areas of my jaw in three dimensions which easily shows them precisely where the infected areas are.
[03:42]
Wisdom teeth
Approximately 15 years ago I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted. Since that leaves behind 4 big holes I wanted to make sure that those holes weren't infected too. I asked for the 3D scan to extend further back and include my wisdom tooth extraction sites. From that scan they found that the bottom two holes were infected but that the top two had no sign of infection.
[05:03]
Surgery
Once the root canal material was removed, they found a large cyst (a periapical cyst). The infection had almost entered my sinus cavity and there was barely anything separating the two. Before the surgery my dentist had taken many tubes of my blood to make a PRF which is basically a byproduct of blood that's high in platelets. After using ozone to kill any leftover bacteria, they inserted the PRF material into the holes. They also inserted an allograft.
[08:45]
Biocompatibility
I had a biocompatibility blood test done well before the surgery took place and they used that test to make sure the materials they use were compatible with my body. They'll also use the test results when picking out the material for the implant that will take the place of my missing tooth where I had the root canal.
[09:52]
Mercury
Everything I've mentioned so far can pale in comparison to someone suffering from mercury poisoning. During this whole process I learned that one of my fillings was a mercury amalgam and I had it removed. I imagine that everyone by now knows the dangers of mercury and that it's one of the most toxic substances on earth for humans. Most dental associations won't admit this and it's still commonly used in filling materials.

Meridians
I'll link below to a meridian tooth chart showing how chronic problems in any part of the body can potentially be the result of a dental issue.
[12:00]
Conclusion
I only recently had my dental work done so I can't comment on any changes it's made to my health.
If you're thinking that you'd like to look into this further, here are my suggestions:
- Learn about the dangers of root canals and poor dental practices online. I'll add links to radio interviews and websites that I found helpful below. I'll also link to the dental office I used.
- Don't bother talking to a standard dentist. It's similar to talking to a GP about Lyme. 99% of the time you'll get nowhere.
- Start by visiting IAOMT.org where you'll find dentists near you who at least understand the dangers of mercury.
- Search for reviews or testimonials online.
- Contact the dentist and find out if they use 3D technology, if they take precautions such as using rubber dams and ventilation when removing mercury amalgams, if they use ozone, if they test for biocompatibility, and so on.
- Consider the possibility that you may have to travel very far to get the right help.
- Consider staying in a hotel near the dentist's office the night after your surgery.
- Anticipate a very expensive quote for the treatment. After adding up all the costs, my dental work will be closer to $10,000.
- Mentally prepare for the possibility that your dental issues were not the primary cause of your medical issues.

wn.com/Ep14 Dental Infections, Mercury Toxcity
