Illegally downloading songs off the Internet has become a common trend around the globe, but a student at Boston University was specifically targeted for the practice. Joel Tenenbaum was sued by the Recording Industry Association of America for sharing 30 songs and now has to cough up a total of $675k. He joins us with more on his ongoing case against the RIAA, which the US Supreme Court decided this week not to hear.

In the 1940s there were as many as 100 different turntable EQs for records. So in 1954 the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America established an EQ for records so that all disc recordings would be standardized.
This EQ added hi-frequency pre-emphasis to minimize the surface noise, in the same way that the NAB EQ helps minimize tape hiss. However, since music today is mixed with much more hi-frequency content than in 1954, care needs to be taken to assure that sibilance distortion doesn't occur, due to this hi-frequency premphasis.
In addition, the RIAA EQ adds a 6 dB per octave hi-pass roll off starting at 1 kHz, so that the signal at 20 Hz is reduced by 20 dB. This permits narrower grooves, allowing more time to be recorded on the disc. Without this low-end roll off, only about 5 minutes of music could be recorded on a 12" disc.
Then on playback of the disc, the highs are attenuated to match the pre-emphasis and the bass is boosted to match the de-emphasis.

In a recent appeal of a decision that gutted a $675,000 finding against an Internet user who downloaded and shared just 30 songs, the government sided with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in claiming that a judge has no right to reduce the amount, no matter how "excessive" it may be deemed.

It is the late 1940s in New York and Corleone is, in the parlance of organized crime, a "godfather" or "don," the head of a Mafia family. Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family "business." A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. The music industry or music business sells compositions, recordings and performances of music. Among the many individuals and organizations that operate within the industry are: the musicians who compose and perform the music; the companies and professionals who create and sell recorded music (e.g., music publishers, producers, studios, engineers, record labels, retail and online music stores, performance rights organizations); those that present live music performances (booking agents, promoters, music venues, road crew); professionals who assist musicians with their music careers (talent managers, business managers, entertainment lawyers); those who broadcast music (satellite and broadcast radio); journalists; educators; musical instrument manufacturers; as well as many others.
In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the music industry was dominated by the publishers of sheet music. By the middle of the century records had supplanted sheet music as the largest player in the music business: in the commercial world people began speaking of "the recording industry" as a loose synonym of "the music industry". Since 2000, sales of recorded music have dropped off substantially, while live music has increased in importance. Four "major corporate labels" dominate recorded music — Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment,Warner Music Group and EMI Group — each of which consists of many smaller companies and labels serving different regions and markets. The live music industry is dominated by Live Nation, the largest promoter and music venue owner. Live Nation is a former subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, which is the largest owner of radio stations in the United States. Other important music industry companies include Creative Artists Agency (a management and booking company) and Apple Inc. (which runs the world's largest music store, the iTunes Store).

Marilyn Manson (born Brian Hugh Warner; January 5, 1969) is an American musician, artist and former music journalist known for his controversial stage persona and image as the lead singer of the eponymous band Marilyn Manson. His stage name was formed from juxtaposing the names of two 1960s American cultural icons, namely actress Marilyn Monroe and convicted multiple murder convictCharles Manson as a critical and, simultaneously, laudatory appraisal of America and its peculiar culture. The seemingly outrageous styles for which he models and the controversy surrounding his lyrics have led to his public appeal.
Marilyn Manson was born in Canton, Ohio. He is the only child of Barbra Warner (maiden name Wyer) and Hugh Warner. Manson is of Polish and German descent on his father's side, and is a fourth cousin twice removed of Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan. In his autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, he detailed his grandfather's sexual fetishes (including bestiality and sadomasochism) which led to the forming of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids.

A short timeline of the RIAA! -
$675k for downloading 30 songs - justice to the record industry
Illegally downloading songs off the Internet has become a common trend around the globe, but a student at Boston University was specifically targeted for the practice. Joel Tenenbaum was sued by the Recording Industry Association of America for sharing 30 songs and now has to cough up a total of $675k. He joins us with more on his ongoing case against the RIAA, which the US Supreme Court decided this week not to hear. RIAA EQ
In the 1940s there were as many as 100 different turntable EQs for records. So in 1954 the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America established an EQ for records so that all disc recordings would be standardized. This EQ added hi-frequency pre-emphasis to minimize the surface noise, in the same way that the NAB EQ helps minimize tape hiss. However, since music today is mixed with much more hi-frequency content than in 1954, care needs to be taken to assure that sibilance distortion doesn't occur, due to this hi-frequency premphasis. In addition, the RIAA EQ adds a 6 dB per octave hi-pass roll off starting at 1 kHz, so that the signal at 20 Hz is reduced by 20 dB. This permits narrower grooves, allowing more time to be recorded on the disc. Without this low-end roll off, ... -

Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family "business." A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. After murdering a corrupt police captain and the drug trafficker, Michael hides out in Sicily while a gang war erupts at home. Falling in love with a local girl, Michael marries her, but she is later slain by Corleone enemies in an attempt on Michael's life. Sonny is also butchered, having been betrayed by Connie's husband. As Michael returns home and convinces Kay to marry him, his father recovers and makes peace with his rivals, realizing that another powerful don was pulling the strings behind the narcotics endeavor that began the gang warfare. Once Michael has been groomed as the new don, he leads the family to a new era of prosperity, then launches a campaign of murderous revenge against those who once tried to wipe out the Corleones, consolidating his family's power and completing his own moral downfall. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, The Godfather was followed by a pair of sequels.

Popularly viewed as one of the best American films ever made, the multi-generational crime saga The Godfather is a touchstone of cinema: one of the most widely imitated, quoted, and lampooned movies of all time. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino star as Vito Corleone and his youngest son, Michael, respectively. It is the late 1940s in New York and Corleone is, in the parlance of organized crime, a "godfather" or "don," the head of a Mafia family. Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family "business." A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. After murdering a corrupt police captain and the drug trafficker, Michael hides out in Sicily while a gang war erupts at home. Falling in love with a local girl, Michael marries her, but she is later slain by Corleone enemies in an attempt on Michael's life. Sonny is also butchered, having been betrayed by Connie's husband. As Michael returns home and convinces Kay to marry him, his father recovers and makes peace with his rivals, realizing that another powerful don was pulling the strings behind the narcotics endeavor that began the gang warfare. Once Michael has been groomed as the new don, he leads the family to a new era of prosperity, then launches a campaign of murderous revenge against those who once tried to wipe out the Corleones, consolidating his family's power and completing his own moral downfall. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, The Godfather was followed by a pair of sequels.

The Recording Industry Association of America, also known as the RIAA, announced recently that they will no longer be filing lawsuits against people who share music illegally online. I would also note, however, that the RIAA is following through with the lawsuits already pending. The decision, as most in business is mostly for monetary reasons. First, the average settlement in these music copyright infringement cases has been between $3,000 and $6,000. The legal fees of the RIAA has had an average cost much higher than the settlement amounts. Second, Online music has now a well established legal system of distributing music online. The music industry is finally feeling like more people are buying music online than stealing it. Thank you, Steve Jobs. Despite where you download your music, it was Apple that made the initial breakthrough with the record companies years ago, getting them to agree that it was possible to distribute music legally online. Finally, suing your customers and fans is just a bad idea. All this considered, the RIAA finally decided it was no longer to their benefit to file lawsuit against people who illegally share music online.
Next, Warner Music has refused to renew their contract with YouTube. Warner Music was dissatisfied with the amount of compensation they were receiving for allowing their music to be used on YouTube. In addition to posting advertising next to videos which contained Warner music, every time a video which contained their music was played, Warner Music received money. Unfortunately, the payment amounted to less than a penny per song, which is ultimately why Warner decided not to sign a new contract with YouTube. This is a blow to YouTube and Google, as I would not be surprised if the other major record companies followed Warners lead. I know a lot of partners who would love to receive even a portion of a penny for every view, rather than just when the advertising is clicked on. Also, I now understand why YouTube never provided a database of songs that could be used in videos, as if they had, there would be a lot of upset people who used music from artists whom were once on the list, and now would have to be removed. I was just about post a vlog questioning why they hadnt done that. It all makes sense now.

It is the only Marilyn Manson studio album to feature bassist Gidget Gein. Gein was fired from the band after its production following a very public and destructive heroin addiction and Twiggy Ramirez, the band's roadie and friend of Gein and Manson, was put as a temporary replacement while Gein got clean and sober. He eventually took over Gein's place and briefly adopted his image. Contrary to popular belief, Ramirez did not play bass on the album. Though Sara Lee Lucas was the featured drummer on the album, Nine Inch Nails live keyboardist Charlie Clouser used a drum machine to replace the work Lucas did. Daisy Berkowitz helped compose music for all of the songs except "Prelude (The Family Trip)" and "Sweet Tooth."
The album was certified Gold on May 29, 2003 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States. It spawned three singles ("Get Your Gunn", "Lunchbox" and "Dope Hat").

Christopher Maurice "Chris" Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American singer, dancer and actor. Born in Tappahannock, Virginia, he was involved in his church choir and several local talent shows from a young age.
