My name is Tricia Stehle, and
I am a psychotherapist with
Great lakes Psychology Group.
I am going to discuss the issue of Workplace Bullying, a relatively newer and understudied area in the field of Psychology and in the study of bullying behaviors.
Workplace bullying occurs when a supervisor/boss/director (what have you) in a position of authority above an employee/subordinate, etc. uses their power, to threaten and abuse that person who is in a more submissive role.
It is characterized by 5 central things:
1.
Repetition: It occurs regularly
2.
Duration: is enduring
3.
Escalation:
Increasing aggression
4.
Power Disparity: The target of the bully lacks the power to successfully defend themselves
5.
Attributed intent (the bully specifically seeks this person-the victim (s) out)
In terms of demographic distribution of workplace bullies, it is most common to see a male bully a female. However, when the supervisor or boss (the bully) is a female, it is most common for her to bully another female.

At the heart of the reason(s) why a bully chooses a specific person(s) to bully is jealousy. They may feel threatened by their employee because that employee has a skill or skills that they lack. They may be jealous of additional credentials or degrees that, that employee has, or their experience. And so, they strive to bring that person down, to a
point where they feel trapped and insecure (thus, giving the bully a more powerful feeling).
Generally, bullies target a person(s) that they have some kind of 'link' or connection with (for instance, a shared hobby). This is where the pre-bullying begins.
Often times, they will befriend them, promise them things, take them out and wine and dine them-all the while, doing their research about what that employee's vulnerabilities and insecurities are, so that later-they can use that against them. It becomes a total abuse of power-and most often, behind closed doors, where no one else can witness it, and the boss/supervisor does not run the risk themselves of being terminated from their position.

It is not uncommon for the employer/supervisor to engage in the bullying outside of company doors as well-and alcohol is often involved
. In the long term, what happens to the employee in this situation, is they feel trapped, afraid to speak up for fear of losing their job, and the bully has placed them right where they wanted them-believing, the degrading things that have been said about them behind closed doors.

If you, or anyone you know is experiencing this at your place of employment, and/or this rings true, you may want to consider seeking out professional help from a therapist or counselor like myself. The psychological damage workplace bullying can do, can be enduring, and deeply affect one's level of self confidence and self esteem
. If the employee ends up having to leave the place of employment to escape the bullying, the psychological damage done in the prior position can follow them. It is important to address this, before it becomes a more long term issue.
