The regal Charlotte and the impish Oliver take the crowns for most popular Australian baby names in 2015. Two newcomers to the top 10 for each sex make their debut for this decade, pushing out some regulars for a bit of a rest.

Ten years ago Ella was the queen of baby girl names but she dropped out of the top 10 after 2011, and hasn't made a return since.

While Ella may have had her day in the limelight, the top boy name for 2006 - Jack - has remained steady in a top two position for eight of the last 10 years, dropping to number three for both 2014 and 2015.

Oliver made his debut in the top 10 in 2008 and climbed the ladder steadily to take first place for the first time in 2014 and now also in 2015.

In fact the top five most popular names for boys have remained the same for the last two years in a row, which is a first for names of either gender in the last decade.

The boy names new to the top 10 are Isaac at number nine and Jacob at number 10. We waved bye-bye to Alexander and Liam who had these spots respectively in 2014.

Effectively, the top eight spots are populated with the same names as the year prior, with new ones putting some pressure on at the bottom of the top ten. It will be interesting to see what happens with Isaac and Jacob next year.

The debut girl names are Zoe - finally breaking free of the top twenty where she has sat for some time - and Sophia. Sophia, crept into the number ten spot, edging out her ever-popular cousin, Sophie.

We could be seeing here, a trend towards more exotic monikers, though ones that don't stray too far from the familiar.

While Ruby came from nowhere in 2010 to take the number one spot, this year she has dropped out of the top ten altogether. It remains to be seen if her five year stint was a flash-in-the-pan, or if she's on temporary hiatus.

The other girl names in the national top ten (Olivia, Amelia, Ava, Mia, Chloe, Emily and Grace) are all stalwarts of the top ten and movements among them have been minimal.
