Today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

When political organizer and Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson announced that he was running for the office of Mayor of Baltimore, many people in the city's political establishment questioned whether or not he was really serious about the campaign and wondered if this was just an attempt to get other more mainstream candidates to address the concerns of the city’s African-American community and embrace progressive causes.  However, since filing the paper work to run for office, DeRay has silenced many of his critics by offering an extensive set of policy proposals on education, economic development, public safety, health, the environment, arts and more that rival and in some cases easily surpass those from the more mainstream candidates in their depth and scope. Deray joins me today on the show to talk all about his campaign for Mayor and the many issues facing the citizens of Baltimore today.

One of the great things about being on SiriusXM is our ability to reach people all across the country and provide a progressive prospective in places where it would not normally be present, which is something that many of our listeners who live conservative areas of the country say comes as a breath of fresh air.  In his new book Blue in a Red State: The Survival Guide to Life in the Real America, Justin Krebs did in person what we do every day via the airwaves, and traveled across the US speaking with progressives in deeply red areas to learn how they get involved in local activism and keep their sanity from day to day.  Justin is the founding director of a national political organization called Living Liberally and a campaign director at the MoveOn Political Action Committee, and he joins me today on the show to talk all about the book and what it is like to be Blue in a Red State.

The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Tomorrow, Arizona, Idaho, and Utah will head to the polls and vote in their states primaries.  And, while he didn’t win any states in last week’s mini-Super Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders is standing firm, saying of the Clinton Campaign while in Arizona, “I don’t believe they have an insurmountable lead”.  Returning to speak with me now about their efforts for tomorrow’s primaries is Symone Sanders, National Press Secretary for Senator Bernie Sanders…

As Trump is looking more and more like the Republican nomination for President, people are starting to take a closer look at the candidate and his business dealings, and one particular aspect of his empire that has been receiving more and more scrutiny is Trump University.  Since it began, the real estate classes which bare Trump’s name have been enveloped in controversy and litigation with countless claims of misleading and fraudulent practices from scores of former students who argue that they were deceived into handing over thousands of dollars as a result of tantalizing promises of riches.  Joining me today to talk all about his experience at Trump University and why he feels it was an absolute con, is Robert Guillo who attended Trump University and has filed an affidavit in the New York case against the school.

Following the Iranian revolution in 1979, the country became closed off for the most part to the west, and what little information did make it out made the nation seem like a sinister presence looming over the horizon.  However, inside the country, things were not always as the media would have it appear, in her new book Children of Paradise: The Struggle for the Soul of Iran veteran journalist Laura Secor tells the story of the efforts of various religious thinkers, political operatives, poets, journalists, and activists who have all struggled to reform Iran and reimagine what the country can be.  Laura joins me today on the show to talk all about the book and the struggle for the soul of Iran.

The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

In 2011, Stephen King released his much anticipated novel 11/22/63, which was on the New York Times best seller list and won several literary awards.  The novel, which focuses on the life of Jake Epping – a divorced English teacher who goes back in time and tries to change the course of history by stopping the assassination of JFK – has since been made into a miniseries and was released on Hulu last month, starring James Franco, Chris Cooper, Cherry Jones, and my guest TR Knight, who you all know from other shows like Grey’s Anatomy and The Good WifeHe joins me on the show today to talk all about this epic new time traveling thriller and so much more.

On the show we talk a lot about religion and the effect it has on people and society, and an essential feature of religious experience across many cultures is the intuitive feeling of God's presence. More than any rituals or doctrines, it is this experience that anchors religious faith, yet it has been largely ignored in the scientific literature on religion.  However, that is no longer the case, in his new book The Illusionof God’s Presence: The Biological Origins of Spiritual Longings computational biologist and neuroscientist John C. Wathey examines the biological origins of this compelling feeling, and attributes it to innate neural circuitry that evolved to promote the mother-child bond, which is eventually transferred to the realm of religion when the infant grows into adulthood.  John Wathey joins me on the show to today to talk all about the book and the biological origins of spiritual longings.

In her new book The Firebrand and the First Lady: Portrait of a Friendship: Pauli Murray, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Struggle for Social Justice Patricia Bell-Scott, professor emerita of women’s studies and human development and family science at the University of Georgia,  tells the story of how a brilliant writer-turned-activist who was the granddaughter of a mixed race slave, and the first lady of the United States, forged an enduring friendship that changed each of their lives and helped to alter the course of social justice in America.  Patricia Bell-Scott joins me now on the show to talk all about the book and the decade’s long friendship between Pauli Murray, the co-founder of the National Organization for Women and Eleanor Roosevelt and the effect it had on the course of American history.

The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Earlier this week, we played on the show a portion of a marathon filibuster out of Missouri that went on to go roughly 39 hours.  However, despite the efforts of my guest, Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, Republicans in the Missouri Senate were able to still go ahead and muscle through a religious freedom bill that would legalize the discrimination of LGBT people by certain religious organizations and individuals in the state.  Joining me now to talk about this bill but also about her epic filibuster is Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal.

If you haven't watched all of Season 4 of "House of Cards" then you're un-American... At least that's what I think Frank Underwood would say. My next guest you know from Scream, The Craft, and 54 is Neve Campbell, who plays Leann Harvey on the newest season of House Of Cards

According to both the adherents and opponents of atheism today, it as an invention of the European Enlightenment, an idea that came about only when the forces of science and secularism broadly challenged those of faith.  However, according to Tim Whitmarsh, Professor of Greek Culture at The University of Cambridge in The United Kingdom, disbelief in the gods, in fact, originated in a far more remote past. In his new book Battling The Gods: Atheism in the Ancient World, he journeys into the ancient Mediterranean, a world almost unimaginably different from our own, to recover the stories and voices of those who first refused the divinities.  Tim joins me today on the show to talk all about the book and the history of atheism’s first thousand years.

The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Over the past few weeks there has been a storm brewing in the Republican Party, as both the supporters and opponents of Donald Trump gear up for the party’s convention in Cleveland this summer.  As you all know, we talk a lot about what’s happening in the GOP from a Progressive viewpoint on this show, but it is also important to get an opinion on the goings on in the GOP from someone who is closer to the center of the storm.  Which is why I have asked my colleague Andrew Wilkow, who hosts The Wilkow Majority which airs Monday-Friday from noon-3pmET on SiriusXM Patriot ch. 125, to come on the show today and give us the Libertarian perspective on the current race for the Republican Presidential nomination.
