Bart Hubert Wilfried Marcel Staes (born on 7 August 1958 in Izegem) is a Belgian politician and a Member of the European Parliament for Flanders. He is a member of Groen!, part of the European Greens. He sits in a transnational delegation together with MEPs for the GreenLeft. He started his career as a Bachelor Dutch-English-economics and became a politician later on. He lives in Antwerp. He started his political career in the Volksunie, which later became Spirit. 2002, Bart Staes made, because of the cartel sp.a-Spirit, the move to the ten-called Agalev (later Groen!). As from 1999, he's ininteruptedly a member of parliament of Europe of firstly Volksunie, later Spirit and now Groen!. He is especially interested in environment and peace movements.
His political career started with membership of the Volksunie, with the collapse of that party in 2002 he joined Groen!.
Staes was first elected into the European Parliament in 1999 and was reelected, as only member from his party, in 2004 and 2009. He currently sits on the Committee on Budgetary Control and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.
