Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video review of Splatoon for Wii U, developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo.
Splatoon marks the first time Nintendo's rolled out a new high-profile, first-party IP since Pikmin on the GameCube back in 2001. That game was an RPS, but tweaked, distorted, and altered into something that diverged wildly from genre conventions and was distinctly and unmistakably a Nintendo game. Splatoon, 14 years later, follows suit almost to the letter, mirthfully subverting the expectations that the phrase "4-on-4 online shooter" would conjure up by making the game less about actually shooting enemies and more about covering as much real estate as possible with splatters of colorful ink.

Shigeru Miyamoto (宮本 茂, Miyamoto Shigeru?) (born November 16, 1952) is a Japanese video game designer and producer. Miyamoto was born and raised in Kyoto Prefecture; the natural surroundings of Kyoto inspired much of Miyamoto's later work.
He is mainly known for his work at the video game production company Nintendo, where he created some of the most successful video game franchises of all time, including Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, F-Zero, Pikmin, and the Wii series.
He currently manages the Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development branch, which handles many of Nintendo's top-selling titles. Miyamoto's games have been seen on every Nintendo video game console, with his earliest work appearing on arcade machines. His games have received critical praise from many reviewers, and he has been the recipient of various awards. He has a wife, Yasuko, and two children.
Miyamoto was born in the Japanese town of Sonobe, Kyoto on November 16, 1952. Miyamoto's later work was greatly influenced by his childhood experiences in the town. From an early age, he began to explore the forest around his home. On one of these expeditions, Miyamoto came upon a cave, and, after days of hesitation, went inside. Miyamoto's expeditions into the Kyoto countryside inspired his later work, particularly the Nintendo Entertainment System version of The Legend of Zelda. Miyamoto graduated from Kanazawa Municipal College of Industrial Arts with no job lined up. He also had a love for manga and initially intended to become a professional manga artist before considering a career in video games, where the manga influence in his work would later be evident. The title that inspired him to enter the video game industry was the 1978 arcade hit Space Invaders.

Das Spiel kam unfassbar gut an und so war es naheliegend für die Nachfolgekonsole "Nintendo Gamecube" auch einen Nachfolger zu Mario 64 zu produzieren. Erstmals zeigte man erstes Konzeptmaterial auf der Nintendo Space World 2001 und später detaillierter vor einem größeren Publikum auf der E3 2002. Im Sommer 2002 war es dann soweit, "Super Mario Sunshine" erschien für den Nintendo Gamecube. Sunshine folgt größtenteils gameplaytechnisch dem Prinzip von Mario 64, bietet aber eine komplett neue Welt mit Urlaubsthematik außerhalb vom Pilzkönigreich, klar vorgegebenen Missionszielen und neuen Gegnern. Die wichtigste Neuerung stellt Marios Gadget, der "Dreckweg 08/17" dar. Mit diesem Gerät kann Mario Wasser verspritzen, eine kurze Zeit schweben, sich wie eine Rakete in die Luft schießen lassen oder extrem schnell sprinten. Nur dank dieses Helferleins kann Mario sein neues Abenteuer bewältigen, denn statt eines erholsamen Urlaubs, kommt es zum großen Drama. Die Urlaubsinsel Isla Delfino ist vom Unbekannten "Mario Morgana", welcher äußerlich Mario ähnelt, verschmutzt und der wahre Mario wird beschuldigt für dessen Taten verantwortlich zu sein. Von einem Gericht wird unser Klempner dazu verdonnert, die gesamte Insel zu säubern, erst dann darf er sie wieder verlassen. Doch damit nicht genug, die 120 Shine Sprites, welche die Sonne auf die Insel holen, sind aufgrund des Schmutzes allesamt verschwunden. Super Mario Sunshine erhielt grandiose Wertungen (92% im Schnitt) und verkaufte sich hervorragende 6,31 Mio mal. Damit befindet sich das Game auf Platz 3 der all time Gamecube Charts. Zwar hat sich mit der Zeit die Meinung zu Sunshine ein wenig gewandelt - es wird heute als eines der schlechtesten oder zumindest kontroversesten Mario-Titel angesehen - bei mir hat das Spiel allerdings denselben Stand wie zum Release: Es ist für mich das beste und spaßigste Mario Abenteuer aller Zeiten!

Nachdem Shigeru Miyamoto und sein Team rund um Eiji Aonuma in "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" einen neuen Comik-Stil, besser gesagt Cel-Shading-Look anwandten, präsentierten sie auf der E3 2004 das, was sich viele Fans schon seit langem gewünscht hatten. Ein Zelda mit realistischer Grafik! Die gezeigten Szenen ähnelten jetzt schon wieder mehr dem Footage, welches auf der Spaceworld im Jahre 2000 gezeigt wurden und lösten beim E3 Publikum grenzenlose Freude aus. Da der neue Titel "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" ohnehin am Ende des kommerziell nur mäßig erfolgreichen Nintendo Gamecubes erscheinen sollte, entschloss man sich einfach dazu, das Game sowohl auf dem Gamecube, als auch auf der Nachfolgekonsole Wii zu veröffentlichen. Beide Versionen erschienen kurz nacheinander im Dezember 2006 in Europa. Nachdem Shigeru Miyamoto und sein Team rund um Eiji Aonuma in "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" einen neuen Comik-Stil, besser gesagt Cel-Shading-Look anwandten, präsentierten sie auf der E3 2004 das, was sich viele Fans schon seit langem gewünscht hatten. Ein Zelda mit realistischer Grafik! Die gezeigten Szenen ähnelten jetzt schon wieder mehr dem Footage, welches auf der Spaceworld im Jahre 2000 gezeigt wurden und lösten beim E3 Publikum grenzenlose Freude aus. Da der neue Titel "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" ohnehin am Ende des kommerziell nur mäßig erfolgreichen Nintendo Gamecubes erscheinen sollte, entschloss man sich einfach dazu, das Game sowohl auf dem Gamecube, als auch auf der Nachfolgekonsole Wii zu veröffentlichen. Beide Versionen erschienen kurz nacheinander im Dezember 2006 in Europa. The first game of the Mario Kart series, it was launched in Japan on August 27, 1992, in North America on September 1, 1992, and in Europe on January 21, 1993. Selling eight million copies worldwide, the game went on to become the third best selling SNES game of all time. In Super Mario Kart the player takes control of one of eight Mario series characters, each with differing capabilities.In single player mode players can race against computer controlled characters in multi-race cups over three difficulty levels. During the races, offensive and speed boosting power-ups can be used to gain an advantage. Alternatively players can race against the clock in a Time Trial mode. In multi-player mode two players can simultaneously take part in the cups or can race against each other one-on-one in Match Race mode. Super Mario Kart is a go-kart racing video game developed by Nintendo EAD for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). In Super Mario Kart the player takes control of one of eight Mario series characters, each with differing capabilities.In single player mode players can race against computer controlled characters in multi-race cups over three difficulty levels. During the races, offensive and speed boosting power-ups can be used to gain an advantage. Alternatively players can race against the clock in a Time Trial mode. In multi-player mode two players can simultaneously take part in the cups or can race against each other one-on-one in Match Race mode. In a third multiplayer mode -- Battle Mode -- the aim is to defeat the other players by attacking them with power-ups, destroying balloons which surround each kart.
