We traveled to one of the most dangerous yet culturally rich cities in the world. Neyah and I walked through Panama's 2nd city on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. Due to years of migration, the culture in Colon is distinctly Afro-Caribbean.

En lo corrido del año han transitado por el país centroamericano unos 204.986 migrantes irregulares en su viaje hacia norteamérica y que entraron por la peligrosa selva del Ddarién, en la frontera con Colombia.
7 de cada 10, son venezolano, el gobierno de Laurentino Cortizo pidió a la Misión Diplomática de Venezuela ayudar a los extranjeros varados y atender la crisis migratoria.
Entre tanto, el líder opositor venezolano Tomás Guanipa visitó El Ddarién, donde a diario cientos de sus connacionales arriesgan sus vidas. Allí documentó el drama, los temores y la crítica situación que viven muchas familias que no saben si avanzar o retroceder.
Algunos piden ayuda para obtener un boleto de avión que los regrese a donde inició su travesía.

Panama (
i/ˈpænəmɑː/ PAN-ə-mah; Spanish: Panamá [panaˈma]), officially called the Republic of Panama (Spanish: República de Panamá), is a country in Central America situated between North and South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half of the country's 3.9 million people.
Panama was inhabited by several indigenous tribes prior to settlement by the Spanish in the 16th century. Panama broke away from Spain in 1821 and joined a union of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela named the Republic of Gran Colombia. When Gran Colombia dissolved in 1831, Panama and Nueva Granada remained joined, eventually becoming the Republic of Colombia. With the backing of the United States, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903, allowing the Panama Canal to be built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. In 1977, an agreement was signed for the total transfer of the Canal from the United States to Panama by the end of the 20th century, which culminated on 31 December 1999.

Panama hat
A Panama hat (toquilla straw hat) is a traditional brimmed straw hat of Ecuadorian origin. Traditionally, hats were made from the plaited leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant, known locally as the toquilla palm or jipijapa palm, although it is a palm-like plant rather than a true palm.
Panama hats are light-colored, lightweight, and breathable, and often worn as accessories to summer-weight suits, such as those made of linen or silk. Beginning around the turn of the 20th century, panamas began to be associated with the seaside and tropical locales.
The art of weaving the traditional Ecuadorian toquilla hat was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists on 6 December 2012. Panama hat is an Intangible Cultural Heritage, a term used to define practices, traditions, knowledge and skills communities pass down from generation to generation as part of their cultural heritage.
History
Beginning in the early to mid-1600’s hat weaving evolved as a cottage industry all along the Ecuadorian coast. Hat weaving and wearing grew steadily in Ecuador through the 17th and 18th centuries. Even then, the best quality hats were being made in what is now the province of Manabí. Straw hats woven in Ecuador, like many other 19th and early 20th century South American goods, were shipped first to the Isthmus of Panama before sailing for their destinations in Asia, the rest of the Americas and Europe, subsequently acquiring a name that reflected their point of international sale, "Panama hats", rather than their place of domestic origin. The term was being used by at least 1834.

Panama, New York
Panama is a village in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 479 at the 2010 census. Panama is in the northwest part of the town of Harmony, at the junction of State Route 474 (Main Street) and County Route 33.
The village is named after Panama Rocks, a large rock formation south of the village. Paleozoic fossils are visible in the outcrops. This site has become a tourist attraction, and the owners charge admission at the gate.
History
The village of Panama was incorporated in 1861.
Among many early settlers was George Hawkins, who purchased Lot 50 in 1825. He was born in 1802 in Oneida County, New York. About 1827 he married Rhoda Powers (born 1806). Together they cleared land to make a living. George died in 1883 and Rhoda in 1900. Rhoda's father was Simeon Powers, who established a Baptist church in the area. George's parents are unknown. Both are buried in Panama Union cemetery under one headstone.
The U.S. Post Office at Panama was established in 1826. That was the first, officially recorded, use of the name "Panama". The traditional story is that Panama got its name from someone who had been across the Isthmus of Panama, and said local rock formations reminded him of Panama's rocks. It is possible that this person was Moses Cushman Marsh, who operated a trading company in Panama, and was Panama's first postmaster. He had previously had a business in Cuba, and he may have been across the Isthmus of Panama.

En lo corrido del año han transitado por el país centroamericano unos 204.986 migrantes irregulares en su viaje hacia norteamérica y que entraron por la peligrosa selva del Ddarién, en la frontera con Colombia.
7 de cada 10, son venezolano, el gobierno de Laurentino Cortizo pidió a la Misión Diplomática de Venezuela ayudar a los extranjeros varados y atender la crisis migratoria.
Entre tanto, el líder opositor venezolano Tomás Guanipa visitó El Ddarién, donde a diario cientos de sus connacionales arriesgan sus vidas. Allí documentó el drama, los temores y la crítica situación que viven muchas familias que no saben si avanzar o retroceder.
Algunos piden ayuda para obtener un boleto de avión que los regrese a donde inició su travesía.

This is an unboxing video of my new Montecristi Panama Hat which I ordered from PanamaHatsDirect.com. The hat is Panama Hats Direct's sub-fino grade Montecristi and my first true panama hat. Why sub-fino? Well, it fell within my budget and since this was my first purchase direct from Ecuador, it made sense to hold back. A little. I was eagerly waiting for it to arrive as I could see its progress via DHL tracking services - from Ecuador to where I live here in Malaysia. There will be a review of it later on after I have worn it for quite a bit. I will also explain a little more about panama hats and also warm climate hats in that follow up video. But give me some months before a review comes up. In the meantime, thank you for watching.

What is a Panama hat?
Basically, it is a white summer hat that is woven from the straw of the Toquilla Palm. Even though it's called Panama hat, it's originally made in Ecuador and it has never been made in Panama. In Ecuador, it's better known as the SOMBRERO DE PAJA TOQUILLA which means as much as a straw hat. Panama hats have been woven in Ecuador since the 17th century and they've been imported since the 19th century to Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
So how did the Panama hat got its name?
During the 1834 Gold Rush in Canada, when miners went from South America to Canada, they saw those hats in Panama and so they got their name. On top of that, Theodore Roosevelt popularised the hat style and even cemented the Panama name when he was wearing one observing the Panama Canal and of course, being photographed.
So how is a Panama made?
Basically, you take the core fibers of the toquilla plant which are also known as cogollos. The cogollos are the hearts of the palm tree and they're carefully separated by hand and then briefly boiled. Since they're wet, they have to be sun-dried or air dried and once that's done, the fiber is bleached with sulfur smoke to give it the original Panama light color. Sometimes, you can also find uncolored hats but they have a much more yellow appearance. To get really fine hats, the palm tree fibers are split into even finer straw fibers. The weaving of a Panama hat begins at the center of the crown. Once the crown is large enough, it's put in a dry pot and woven on top of a hat block at about waist height. Once the weave extends past the size of the hat block, the weaver adds additional blocks on top and pulls down the weave so it stays in place and it gets that hat shape. The entire process is physically quite tiring and depending on how fine your hat is, it can take anywhere from a few weeks up to several months to create one hat. Once the weaver gets to the edge of the brim, it's typically handed off to other artisans who finish the hat. Traditionally, a Panama hat has a loose back weave which is much more elegant than a cut and sewn edge. So when you want a quality hat, look for that edge because if it's back woven, it's of a much higher quality than if it’s cut and sewn. Typically, you have one person who starts the back weave, a second one that tightens it, and the third one cuts off the loose straw so it has a polished nice finish. If you have a very fine hat, they keep that excess straw and use it to maybe make repairs later. In the next step, the hats are washed and bleached with sulfur to make them softer and more suitable to wear as a wonderful summer hat. Subsequently, the hats are blocked or either brought to the US to head blockers who then get the hat the right shape. In my experience, the hats that come directly out of Ecuador usually have a very small range of different styles and shapes and are very limited. Because of that, quality Panama hats are usually brought raw at this stage to the US or to other countries which are then blocked by an experienced head blocker who can get exactly the shape the customer demands. Traditionally, every Panama hat was woven by hand but due to a high demand, most hats these days are machine woven.

How to steam and reshape your Panama hat
KEEPING YOUR HAT LOOKING GOOD TAKES A LITTLE PRACTICE
Panama hats are porous and made from natural straw, so over time they change shape and reflect the life they have lived. Sometimes you will 'injure' them, but there are a few tricks to healing all their maladies.
Using your household kettle, steam from a pot, a steam iron or a proper steamer you can soften the straw and reshape it any way you like. Obviously, be careful not to scald yourself and take your time. Feel into your hat and learn to judge when it is soft enough to work with.
When your hat is warmed with steam, it softens like wet cardboard. You can then reshape it any way you like and it will hold that shape to a large degree. As it drys, the straw fibres realign, and your hat forms a memory for the shape you have made. It is kind of magical and the reason why Panama hats have been so successful, for so long.
You don't need any fancy tools, just some steam and some patience. Once you get the hang of it, your hats will always look just the way you like them.
In the old days, everyone knew how to care for their Panama. It was much the same as ironing a shirt and brushing a coat. Hat owners understood how to groom their hat into their dream shape. Sitting on the train, with your hat in your hand, you would refine and tweak its styling while you daydreamed. It is a beautiful, almost meditative old practice.

If you have a small hat like this one with a not so wide crown and a very short brim, it makes the person look automatically bigger; so that's something you should always avoid. On the other hand, a larger hat makes everything more proportional, more suitable, and the wearer doesn't look oversized. The same is true for the hat band, ideally, you go with something quite wide that has a very low contrast to the hat, ideally in the same color. If you're a bigger gentleman and you want to snap your brim down, that's okay but rather than having just a slight snap, try to snip it all the way down and get a really deep snap, that way it suits your silhouette more. This is an unboxing video of my new Montecristi Panama Hat which I ordered from PanamaHatsDirect.com. The hat is Panama Hats Direct's sub-fino grade Montecristi and my first true panama hat. Why sub-fino? Well, it fell within my budget and since this was my first purchase direct from Ecuador, it made sense to hold back. A little.
I was eagerly waiting for it to arrive as I could see its progress via DHL tracking services - from Ecuador to where I live here in Malaysia.
There will be a review of it later on after I have worn it for quite a bit. I will also explain a little more about panama hats and also warm climate hats in that follow up video. But give me some months before a review comes up.

Panama (i/ˈpænəmɑː/ PAN-ə-mah; Spanish: Panamá [panaˈma]), officially called the Republic of Panama (Spanish: República de Panamá), is a country in Central America situated between North and South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half of the country's 3.9 million people.
Panama was inhabited by several indigenous tribes prior to settlement by the Spanish in the 16th century. Panama broke away from Spain in 1821 and joined a union of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela named the Republic of Gran Colombia. When Gran Colombia dissolved in 1831, Panama and Nueva Granada remained joined, eventually becoming the Republic of Colombia. With the backing of the United States, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903, allowing the Panama Canal to be built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. In 1977, an agreement was signed for the total transfer of the Canal from the United States to Panama by the end of the 20th century, which culminated on 31 December 1999.

What is a Panama hat?
Basically, it is a white summer hat that is woven from the straw of the Toquilla Palm. Even though it's called Panama hat, it's originally made in Ecuador and it has never been made in Panama. In Ecuador, it's better known as the SOMBRERO DE PAJA TOQUILLA which means as much as a straw hat. Panama hats have been woven in Ecuador since the 17th century and they've been imported since the 19th century to Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
So how did the Panama hat got its name?
During the 1834 Gold Rush in Canada, when miners went from South America to Canada, they saw those hats in Panama and so they got their name. On top of that, Theodore Roosevelt popularised the hat style and even cemented the Panama name when he was wearing one observing the Panama Canal and of course, being photographed.
So how is a Panama made?
Basically, you take the core fibers of the toquilla plant which are also known as cogollos. The cogollos are the hearts of the palm tree and they're carefully separated by hand and then briefly boiled. Since they're wet, they have to be sun-dried or air dried and once that's done, the fiber is bleached with sulfur smoke to give it the original Panama light color. Sometimes, you can also find uncolored hats but they have a much more yellow appearance. To get really fine hats, the palm tree fibers are split into even finer straw fibers. The weaving of a Panama hat begins at the center of the crown. Once the crown is large enough, it's put in a dry pot and woven on top of a hat block at about waist height. Once the weave extends past the size of the hat block, the weaver adds additional blocks on top and pulls down the weave so it stays in place and it gets that hat shape. The entire process is physically quite tiring and depending on how fine your hat is, it can take anywhere from a few weeks up to several months to create one hat. Once the weaver gets to the edge of the brim, it's typically handed off to other artisans who finish the hat. Traditionally, a Panama hat has a loose back weave which is much more elegant than a cut and sewn edge. So when you want a quality hat, look for that edge because if it's back woven, it's of a much higher quality than if it’s cut and sewn. Typically, you have one person who starts the back weave, a second one that tightens it, and the third one cuts off the loose straw so it has a polished nice finish. If you have a very fine hat, they keep that excess straw and use it to maybe make repairs later. In the next step, the hats are washed and bleached with sulfur to make them softer and more suitable to wear as a wonderful summer hat. Subsequently, the hats are blocked or either brought to the US to head blockers who then get the hat the right shape. In my experience, the hats that come directly out of Ecuador usually have a very small range of different styles and shapes and are very limited. Because of that, quality Panama hats are usually brought raw at this stage to the US or to other countries which are then blocked by an experienced head blocker who can get exactly the shape the customer demands. Traditionally, every Panama hat was woven by hand but due to a high demand, most hats these days are machine woven.

How to steam and reshape your Panama hat
KEEPING YOUR HAT LOOKING GOOD TAKES A LITTLE PRACTICE
Panama hats are porous and made from natural straw, so over time they change shape and reflect the life they have lived. Sometimes you will 'injure' them, but there are a few tricks to healing all their maladies.
Using your household kettle, steam from a pot, a steam iron or a proper steamer you can soften the straw and reshape it any way you like. Obviously, be careful not to scald yourself and take your time. Feel into your hat and learn to judge when it is soft enough to work with.
When your hat is warmed with steam, it softens like wet cardboard. You can then reshape it any way you like and it will hold that shape to a large degree. As it drys, the straw fibres realign, and your hat forms a memory for the shape you have made. It is kind of magical and the reason why Panama hats have been so successful, for so long.
You don't need any fancy tools, just some steam and some patience. Once you get the hang of it, your hats will always look just the way you like them.
In the old days, everyone knew how to care for their Panama. It was much the same as ironing a shirt and brushing a coat. Hat owners understood how to groom their hat into their dream shape. If you, for example, wear a little one, it makes you look even bigger. If you have a small hat like this one with a not so wide crown and a very short brim, it makes the person look automatically bigger; so that's something you should always avoid. On the other hand, a larger hat makes everything more proportional, more suitable, and the wearer doesn't look oversized. The same is true for the hat band, ideally, you go with something quite wide that has a very low contrast to the hat, ideally in the same color. If you're a bigger gentleman and you want to snap your brim down, that's okay but rather than having just a slight snap, try to snip it all the way down and get a really deep snap, that way it suits your silhouette more. The brim should be rather wide, at least two and a half inches which are about six and a quarter centimeters. Fedoras are a great hat for larger men and so are Homburg hats with a certain size.

If you're shorter, you'll always benefit from wearing a hat because it elongates your body and makes you look taller. Rather than having a rather wide crown, it pays to have it pinched to a point because it just flatters your short silhouette more. Also, rather than going with a tone in tone hat band, it pays to switch it up for something that's contrasting.

Ideally, you don’t want to accentuate your height even more which means don’t go for a high crown. Instead, go for medium to low crowns.
Facial Features:
04:43 Big Nose: Rather than having it curled up, you definitely want to snap it down. Rather than going for a very pointy pinch, go for something that's a little wider. Slim brims that are snapped up or just slightly snapped down are your enemy because they will just accentuate the size of your nose.
05:15 Receding chin: Definitely make sure to avoid a big hat and a full crown because that will just highlight your receding chin, likewise, don't snap your hat too much because it's not an advantageous look for you.
05:51 Chiseled features: you want a hat with a slight pinch on the crown that is not too small and you want a nice deep snap. It's definitely best to not tilt your hat but keep it straight so everything looks more proportional. In order not to highlight your chiseled features, I urge you to stay away from a very tall crown or a very slim brim.

If you're a man with a round face, avoid getting hats that are too small. You don't want something that has a really pointy crown, and you also don't want to have a very slim brim that is not snapped down all the way; just makes you look goofy and disproportionately large.
06:59 Protruding ears: it's very important that you have a wider brim that is snapped down and not snapped up. The brim is important because it doesn't highlight the size of your ears or the shape, but it rather helps to cover them up. Opt for a wider crown that is not too pointy, although a little point is alright. Also, go with a wide hatband that's ideally somewhat contrasting because of your ears, it really pays to not just snap down the hat in the front but also in the back. If you have protruding ears, you definitely want to avoid small hats with shorter brims and anything that is pointed up.

This is an unboxing video of my new Montecristi Panama Hat which I ordered from PanamaHatsDirect.com. The hat is Panama Hats Direct's sub-fino grade Montecristi and my first true panama hat. Why sub-fino? Well, it fell within my budget and since this was my first purchase direct from Ecuador, it made sense to hold back. A little.
I was eagerly waiting for it to arrive as I could see its progress via DHL tracking services - from Ecuador to where I live here in Malaysia.
There will be a review of it later on after I have worn it for quite a bit. I will also explain a little more about panama hats and also warm climate hats in that follow up video. But give me some months before a review comes up.
