Come Fly With Me - The Story of Pan Am
Documentary telling the story of how Pan American World Airways kickstarted the jet-age and shrank the globe. Real-life 'Pan Am girls' recall a high-life of luxury and glamour; rubbing shoulders with celebrity passengers, international romances and having to wear the now infamous girdle. Stars of the jet-age such as Robert Vaughn and Mary Quant remember the food, fashion and girls that made them regular Pan Am passengers.
Pan Am's success was largely due to its visionary founder Juan Trippe, who transformed a small mail carrier in to a global airline, pioneered flights for the masses and helped create the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.
Honor Blackman narrates the story of how Pan Am conquered the skies and left a legacy of affordable travel and a much smaller world.

The Rise And Fall Of Pan Am
Pan Am was once the largest international airline in the US. In 1970 alone, it carried 11 million passengers to 86 countries worldwide. Pan Am is credited as the innovator of countless features of air travel, including cabin service, radio communications, onboard safety, air traffic control, and aviation weather forecasting. But after 60 years of flight, decades of financial turbulence, and a devastating terrorist attack above the skies of Lockerbie, Scotland, Pan Am went bust.

Crash of Pan Am Flight 214, Elkton, MD., Dec. 8, 1963
On Dec. 8, 1963, Pan Am World Airways Flight 214 crashed in Elkton, MD. To mark the passage of 50 years since the accident, the Historical Society of Cecil County held a "Remembrance Program." To honor the memory of the victims of Flight 214, this PowerPoint presentation was created by Jo Ann and Alan Gardner. Since a sudden snow storm disrupted travel on Dec. 8, 2013, many family members and people from the community were unable to attend the event. Thus the Society is streaming this part of the program here.

Crash:
While the plane was in a holding pattern above Elkton, Maryland as it was nearing Philidelphia at 5,000 feet it suddenly exploded mid-air and broke apart with the wreckage landing in a marshy field killing everyone on board.
Investigation:
When the plane was in a holding pattern in a storm a lightning strike hit the outboard left wing which ignited fuel vapors in the No.1 reserve fuel tank causing an explosion that ripped off part of the outboard left wing causing the plane to disintegrate.

The Boeing, named "Clipper Racer", had departed San Francisco on cargo/mail flight to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam via Anchorage, Tokyo, and Da Nang.
Because of below minima weather at Anchorage International Airport, the aircraft landed at Elmendorf AFB. Several delays were experienced before the flight taxied out at 06:02. Flight 799 was given a void time of 06:15 by Oceanic Control to avoid traffic conflict. If the crew failed to make that time, it would result in a 45 min delay. When the checklist item "wing flaps" was called, the 'follow me' truck arrived to guide them to runway 23. From then on the crew were busy steering the plane on the slippery taxiways and talking to Oceanic Control resp. The aircr...

The controller lets the crew know that they had about 5 planes in a holding pattern, they had elected to hold till the weather eased up a bit, the controller leaves the final decision upto the crew, they could push through the bad weather and make an approach right now, or they could wait around a bit until the weather improved.
The crew elected to hold west of the VOR, they wanted the weather to calm down a bit, they expected to be out of the holding pattern by 9:10 pm. 8:50 pm the crew let the controller know that they were ready to make the approach to Philadelphia, the controller asks them to stay in the hold for a bit longer. The crew replied with “Roger, no hurry just wanted to let you know that we’ll accept a clearance”.
The controller went back to his duties, 8 minutes later a panicked voice came over the frequency “ Mayday Mayday Mayday, clipper 214 out of control, here we go”, A quick burst and then silence. The alarmed controller then got another transmission, not from clipper 214 but from the first officer of national airlines flight 16, another plane that was in the holding pattern. National airlines flight 16 was 1000 feet above flight 214 and they had a front row seat to what was unravelling infront of them. The First officer of national airlines flight 16 said “Clipper 214 is going down in flames”, the first officer watched as the plane plunged into the dark night. 99 people on the ground back up the first officer of the national airlines pilot they too had seen a flaming plane in the skies of Elkton At 8:59 pm the plane impacted the ground east of elkton maryland. Unfortunately no one survived.
The once mighty 707 was now reduced to metal fragments in a 4 mile long patch of land in Elkton. They sifted through the wreckage hoping that it would tell them something about the plane. They found the CVR but it had been compacted by the 200G force of impact double of what it was designed for. They found the trailing edge of the left horizontal stabilizer. Where they noticed something strange. The horizontal stabilizer was damaged, but not in a way that the crash would have damaged it, the paint on the stabilizer was blistered, and it was smeared

This is the story of Pan Am flight 214, On the 8th of december 1963 a Pan am 707 was on its way from san juan with a stopover at Friendship airport, maryland and then it would make its way to philadelphia international airport, onboard were 73 passengers and 8 crew members. Before the plane even left the ground from san juan the captain was briefed about the weather that he could expect along his flight path. He was told to expect thunderstorms as he passed by Baltimore and philadelphia. Flight 214 departed san juan at 4:10 pm and reached baltimore at 7:35 pm. The plane was refueled and it was ready for its next leg to philadelphia. Flight 214 departed baltimore at 8:24 pm with the crew keeping a close eye on the weather.
As an am flight 214 got closer to its destination the plane was handed over to new castle approach control. Who was not equipped with radar. Flight 214 was asked to maintain 5000 feet and they were cleared to the new castle VOR. By 8:42 Pm the plane was at the new castle VOR. But the controller did not have good news. A cloud bank was present between 700 and 800 feet. Visibility was less than ideal and it was raining. Making matters worse for the crew it was windy, winds ranged from 20 knots to 30 knots. Pan Am Plane Crash Compilation - Besiege

Pan Am 214 was a commercial passenger flight from Carolina, Puerto Rico to Philidelphia, Pennsylvania with a stopover in Baltimore, Maryland on December 8th, 1963 carrying 81 people.
Pan Am 806 was a commercial passenger flight from Auckland, New Zealand to Los Angeles, California with stopovers in Pago Pago, American Samoa, and Honolulu, Hawaii on January 30th, 1974 carrying 101 people.
Crash:
The plane was landing using the ILS to runway 5 when it entered a rain shower at 11:39 PM, at 11:41 the plane started to strike treetops 3,865 feet short of the runway before flying for another 236 feet then crashing into the ground and skidding 539 feet, the aircraft struck a 3-foot high mound with the post-crash fire consuming the aircraft killing 97 people with 4 surviving.
Investigation:
The plane was descending at a very high rate that the pilots were unable to prevent, they failed to monitor their instruments and the wind produced by the bad weather caused the plane to descend more, the crew's vision was also limited and optical illusions affected their judgment.
Pan Am 812 was a commercial passenger flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, California with stopovers in Denpasar, Indonesia, Sydney, Australia, Fiji, and Honolulu, Hawaii
Crash:
The aircraft was supposed to land at Denpasar but the aircraft's last transmission was at 12:26 AM but was not picked up by the ATC, subsequently, the aircraft was found to have crashed into Mount Mesehe 42 nautical miles northwest of the airport, everyone on board was killed instantly by the force of the impact.
Investigation:
Everything was going fine until at 12:18 AM when the No.1 Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) was moving sporadically and swinging around, the No.2 ADF was working fine and pointing north, the crew believed the No.1 ADF to be right and thought they were nearing the Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) they had to approach, in reality, they were 30 nautical miles north of the NDB but the crew didn't know this so they began to make an early right turn. Because they thought they were approaching the beacon they assumed they were clear of the terrain in the area and requested to descend to a lower altitude, they descended from 12,000 feet on a collision course with Mount Mesehe, if they had stayed at 12,000 feet the accident would've been averted but they descended in the middle of the night into Mount Mesehe.
Pan Am 73 was a commercial passenger flight from Mumbai, India to New York City, New York with stopovers in Karachi, Pakistan, and Frankfurt, West Germany on September 5th, 1986 carrying 388 people.
Incident:
At 4:30 AM while taking on new passengers at Karachi 2 terrorists in security uniforms approached the plane with 2 others following suit, they fired shots and stormed the ramp, and got on the plane with a briefcase full of grenades. The crew was able to escape the plane so the terrorists were forced to "negotiate" with officials with the terrorists killing an Indian-American national, hours later the next night a passenger was able to unlock a door when the firing started, as Pakistani commandos approached the plane at 9:30 PM the Pakistani terrorists started to open fire on passengers, due to the lack of lighting in the plane after the generator stopped working the day previous the terrorists were unable to detonate their explosives and most of the passengers escaped alive. 51 passengers died in the ordeal most of them Indian Nationals, 365 people survived this attack.
Pan AM 759 was a commercial passenger flight from Miami, Florida to San Diego, California with stopovers in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Las Vegas, Nevada on July 9th, 1982 carrying 145 people.
Crash:
The plane lifted off from the runway in New Orleans at 4:08 PM headed for Las Vegas, the plane failed to gain altitude and only climbed to about 150 feet before crashing into a residential area at 4:09 PM killing all 145 people onboard and 8 on the ground totaling 153 fatalities.
Investigation:
The plane had flown into a Microburst shortly after take-off, the strong headwinds and wind shear caused the aircraft to lose lift, the plane couldn't be recovered at all and the pilots didn't know what they flew into causing confusion. At the time Microbursts weren't really known about and weren't seen as a threat, there was only limited microburst detection technology, this crash and Delta 191 contributed to the development of the Airborne wind shear detection and alert system.

The aircraft was cleared for takeoff at 06:14. The stickshaker sounded shortly after VR (154 kts). The aircraft rotated climbed slowly. The right wing contacted the snow covered ground 94 feet left of the extended centerline at a distance of 2760 feet from the runway. The aircraft rolled inverted and broke up.
