Fungal hyphae in microscope cam
Fungal hyphae in microscope cam
The fungal hyphae (strands) are faintly purplish brown. Greenish brown clumps are organic matter, typical of good soil. Some of the tiny specks are bacteria. These are most likely some of the many beneficial bacteria species vital to soil health. Fungal hyphae with this diameter and coloration are also probably from beneficial species of fungi. Parts of the image shift in and out of focus to show details at different depths in a three dimensional liquid medium. The total magnification is approximately 400x, from a 40x objective lens and a 10x eyepiece.

Various -- Air Texture Volume I Label: Air Texture -- AIR001 Format: 2 × CD, Compilation Country: US Released: Oct 2011 Genre: Electronic Style: Ambient Ambient today isn't so much about psychedelics or chilling out as it is presenting the melodic or beatless fabric of dance music. Stripped of prevalent rhythm, songs tend toward melodic composition and detail. These songs may become "compositional" as individuals express themselves with technology under focused or emotive ideals. The music becomes timeless (free of meter) when the music looses its structure while retaining its idea. In the tradition of Excursions in Ambience, Instinct Ambient, and Pop Ambient, Air Texture looks to catalogue and promote the diverse world of ambient, experimental, and less beat oriented electronic music. The Air Texture Volume Series asks two producers to curate a CD each of material for combined release. Volume I looked to bvdub (Brock Van Wey) and Andrew Thomas for guidance. Selections featured an in-depth list of emerging and established artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never, Ian Hawgood, Atlas Sound, Klimek, loscil, Biosphere, Markus Guentner, and Wolfgang Voigt. Volume II will be selected by loscil and Rafael Anton Irisarri. Volume III by Deadbeat and DJ Olive. Growing a Hyphae Lamp
Growing a Hyphae Lamp
The Hyphae Lamp is a new series of algorithmically generated lighting designs by Nervous System. Each lamp is individually grown through a process based on leaf vein formation. No two lamps are alike. Each lamp casts a unique pattern of branching shadows on the wall and ceiling, creating an ethereal and organic atmosphere. The lamps are 3D-printed to order in nylon and illuminated with eco-friendly LED lights. The first 10 lamps in the series will be available for purchase on July 11th. more information at nervous.com/blog/?p=1701 animation by Nervous System music by Scion Eidolon

The Bathroom Reinvented: Hyphae
Ecologist Brent Bucknum, principal of Hyphae Design Lab in Oakland, California, shares the ABC's of re-routing a home's waste water (greywater) to sustainably irrigate gardens and other green spaces. He takes us from his live/work space in Oakland to several residential sites around Berkeley that feature greywater systems in various stages of completion.

"the trick... is... to combine your waking rational abilities, with the infinite possibilities of your dreams, because if you can do that, you can do anything..." "And he said I always use two sugar cubes, and I said that these are small look at them, and he looked at them, and they were, they were smaller than normal sugar cubes, because while I was dropping the lsd on them some of the sugar of course melted off, so I grabbed another one and threw it in, that made us, that brought us up to about 6000 mics." and I said 'is that gonna be sweet enough for you?'

Hyphae - Vessel Pendant
Hyphae - Vessel Pendant
Hyphae is a collection of 3D printed artifacts constructed of rhizome-like networks. Inspired by the vein structures that carry fluids through organisms from the leaves of plants to our own circulatory systems, we created a simulation which uses physical growth principles to build sculptural, organic structures. Starting from an initial seed and a surface, we grow a hierarchical network where nodes constantly branch and merge. The densely interconnected structure is at once airy and strong.

Neutrophils cooperate to transport hyphal fragments into larger accumulations.
Isolated neutrophils were incubated together with hyphae in the presence of the blue DNA dye Hoechst in a laboratory made incubation chamber and analysed by live cell microscopy. The movie shows how a number of free neutrophils associate with a small hyphal fragment and transport it to an area, where a larger hypha is already associated with many other neutrophils. Similar phenomena can be observed in acute lung slices. Real time is given at the bottom of the movie. Coffin Fly Larvae Munching the Hyphae of the Fungus - Aspergillus niger.mov
Scuttle Fly usually feed on mushrooms but in this video they appear like herd of cows feeding on grasses of the conidiophores and hyphae of the filamentous fungus: Aspergillus niger. This took place in an agar plate culture of Aspergillus niger contaminated by larvae of the Humpbacked Fly.

Neutrophils transport hyphae of Aspergillus fumigatus within an infected lung slice.
A Lys-EGFP mouse was treated as described for movie 4. The sequence shows several neutrophils (green) cooperating in the transport of a hypha (light blue) from the centre part (starting at minute 9 of the movie) to the left, where a larger accumulation of other neutrophils is located. Please also note the general accumulation of large numbers of neutrophils in a swarm-like manner into the entire area, which is a typical feature of these cells in vivo. The dark blue colour indicates lung tissue and red indicates DNA (Sytox Orange). Indicated is a scale bar and real time in minutes. Swollen hyphae germinate in the lung and induce NET formation.
A wild type mouse was treated as described for Video S4. The movie shows a series of Z-slices through a large fungal mass with clearly detectable outgrowing hyphae as well as NET-structures at the periphery of the mass and the borders of alveoli. Afterwards, the whole Z-stack is 3-D rendered and rotated to demonstrate the 3-D appearance of the fungal ball relative to the lung structures. Dimensions of the stack are given at the bottom.
