Nigeria’s military has released videos of its ongoing counter-terrorism operations to dislodge Boko Haram terrorists inside the notorious Sambisa Forest. The video showed the dexterity of Nigerian Air Force pilots, as they taunt the terrorists, with hundreds of them running helter-skelter and fleeing into different directions. "If there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America. They don't care." Who said these words? Go on, guess? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? Nope. Fidel Castro? Guess again. George Galloway, right? Wrong. It was the late, great Nelson Mandela, speaking in January 2003. Plenty of quotes from Madiba have been doing the rounds on Twitter and Facebook, in newspaper obituaries and online profiles, but this particular one hasn't had as much traction as the rest. Could it be because it defies the lazy image of the former South African president as a secular saint, a 'unifier', a figure who supposedly 'transcended' politics and the left-right divide? Could it be because it would force us to reluctantly acknowledge that the ex-ANC leader didn't just battle against injustice at home - who, after all, is pro-apartheid, these days? - but battled against injustice abroad, too. Against (yes, democratically-elected) leaders and governments in the west that now want to wrap themselves in his name, his memory, his legacy. Of the various tributes that have poured in over the past 24 hours from world leaders, both current and former, three in particular stood out for me. Former US president George W. Bush, in a statement put out by his office in Dallas, hailed Mandela as a "good man" and "one of the great forces for freedom and equality of our time". Former British prime minister Tony Blair told the BBC: "He was someone who would put people at their ease, he was someone who brought out the best in people, you felt that when you were with him." And the Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu said: "He will be remembered as the father of the new South Africa and a moral leader of the highest order." Yes, yes, yes. We get it. We all agree on the "good man", "moral leader", "brought out the best in people" stuff. So far, so uncontroversial. But when will Messrs Bush, Blair or Netanyahu, or their outriders in the media, admit that the late South African president was also a proud, passionate and life-long critic of some of the key policies that they advocated and implemented, both in and out of high office. Take Iraq. In a speech in January 2003, two months before the invasion, Mandela said military action against the Saddam Hussein regime without UN Security Council approval would be illegitimate; he savaged both Bush and Blair for "undermining the United Nations". He also accused the then president of the United States, a "small man" who has "no foresight", of "wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust". Yes, holocaust. And yes, Mandela said it. Not John Pilger or Michael Moore. "Why is the United States behaving so arrogantly?" he continued. "All that (Mr. Bush) wants is Iraqi oil." Again, Nelson Mandela speaking. Not Tony Benn or the Stop The War Coalition . (In the same speech, incidentally, he also attacked the United States more broadly for its poor post-war record on human rights and for its nuclear strike on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was in this context that he made his stinging remark about America's "unspeakable atrocities".) Take Afghanistan and the so-called 'war on terror'. After initially giving his support to the US-led assault on the Taliban in the aftermath of the horrific 9/11 attacks, Mandela quickly backtracked, saying in January 2002 that his earlier views had been "one-sided and overstated". He apologised for having given the impression that he was "insensitive to and uncaring about the suffering inflicted upon the Afghan people and country" and reminded the Bush administration that the "labeling of Osama bin Laden as the terrorist responsible for those acts before he had been tried and convicted could also be seen as undermining some of the basic tenets of the rule of law". In his 2002 statement, Mandela reiterated his opposition to acts of terror, and reminded readers of how appalled he had been by the barbarism of the 9/11 attacks, but argued that those responsible for bringing down the Twin Towers must be "apprehended and brought to trial without inflicting suffering on innocent people". Do we now have to rebrand Madiba as an apologist for Al Qaeda and appeaser of the Taliban? Take, perhaps above all else, Israel and its treatment of the occupied Palestinian people. Mandela referred to Yasser Arafat as a "comrade in arms"; in February 1990, just 16 days after being released from prison, Mandela embraced Arafat in Lusaka, Zambia, comparing the Palestinian struggle against Israel to the black struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Bush had waded into the revitalized same-sex marriage debate last week - if only barely - in a comment to a reporter in Zambia, who asked whether gay marriage conflicts with Christian values. The topic has seen rejuvenated discussion after the Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on same-sex marriage, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). On another hot political topic -- immigration -- Bush said he thinks a major reform bill "has a chance to pass." In 2007, Bush sought to pass an immigration bill similar to what's been proposed in Congress this year, seeking to provide citizenship opportunity for undocumented immigrants already living in the U.S. "It's a very difficult bill to pass because there's a lot of moving parts," Bush said on "This Week." "But it looks like they're making some progress." Bush said immigration is important to pass because of a "broken system," not to improve the Republican Party's political standing among Latino voters. "Good policy yields good politics, as far as I'm concerned," Bush said.

As the war escalated the Rhodesians increasingly resorted to external raids, attacking targets in Mozambique, Angola and Zambia. Their view of these raids is reproduced in the fictionalised account of the Green Leader raid, Operation Zambezi. The Green Leader raid was not the most significant strategically, but it was the most heavily publicised, within Rhodesia and internationally. One of the factors provoking the Green Leader raid was the shooting down of a Rhodesian Viscount - Rhodesian reaction was recalled internally in "A Deafening Silence" The raid began with an airstrike on the camps, after which helicopter gunships and ground troops would move in. After the first bombs fell came the Rhodesian's propaganda masterstroke. Climbing away after the bomb run, the commander of the raid -- Green Leader -- contacted Lusaka control tower. The tape of their conversation was broadcast throughout the world; it provided an incredible boost to white morale, and is still talked about by white Rhodesians today. "Lusaka Tower, this is Green Leader. This is a message for the station commander at Mumba from the Rhodesian Air Force. We are attacking the terrorist base at Westlands farm at this time. This attack is against Rhodesian dissidents and not against Zambia. Rhodesia has no quarrel, repeat, no quarrel, with Zambia or her security forces. We therefore ask you not to intervene or oppose our attack. However, we are orbiting your airfield at this time and are under orders to shoot down any Zambian Air Force aircraft which does not comply with this request and attempts to take off. Did you copy all that?" Lusaka tower replies that they have understood, and ask whether civil aircraft are still cleared to land. Green Leader asks them to wait half an hour or so. The impression given is very much that the Rhodesians are totally in control of the situation. And when Lusaka tower was asked by the incoming Kenya airways jet who had priority, Lusaka tower simply replied "I think the Rhodesians do". This segment of dialogue was sampled in one of the best selling records in Rhodesia in 1978/79 -- the Green Leader March -- still available over the Internet today, and reproduced as the blurb on the back cover of this book; t-shirts, bumper stickers and a wealth of other merchandise were also produced to celebrate the audacity. The reality is somewhat different. As you might expect, the tape released to the international media was heavily edited; unfortunately for the Rhodesians, copies of the original survived, and is now available on the internet. This is a fuller version; I apologise for anyone who is offended by the odd swear word. I'll begin with Green Leader's aircraft beginning the bomb run; the two main characters are Green Leader and his navigator/ bomb aimer The navigator announces the bombs have been released: Steady. Steady. NOW. BOMBS GONE. THEY'RE RUNNING! Green Leader: Beautiful. Jesus Christ, you want to see all those fuckers. Those fucking bombs were beautiful. What the fuck is G.. doing so close? Navigator: They're straight running into the other frag, sir Air Rhodesia Viscount - the downing of one is often seen as precipitating the raid Green Leader: Just let me get onto the fucking tower to give them our bloody message. Where's this fucking piece of speech? Navigator: I think we'd better wait till we've climbed up, sir Green Leader: Yah, just trying to get that thing ready. That was mush. Fucking hundreds of the cunts. Fucking magnificent. Jesus, those fucking kaffirs. . . . They're like fucking ants running around there, hey? Navigator: Remember the tape recorder, sir Green Leader: Ah, fuck it. There are now a couple of bursts of conversation between Rhodesian helicopter gunships, before Green Leader asks his navigator to check the tape recorder is working. OK, let me try and get this spiel off: Lusaka Tower, this is Green Leader, how do you read? Only one of the Rhodesian texts even hints at this, saying that the "choice obscenities were not unusual in such a combination of exhilaration and stress . . .among the more printable phrases. . . are the guerrillas running about like ants." These texts are prepared to describe in great detail the effects of the Rhodesian attack, saying exactly what napalm and anti-personnel bombs can do to a person, or to talk of the hundreds of dead guerrillas. They are unprepared to use the odd "f" word. The whole point is that -- aside from the racial remarks -- this would go against the ideas of military professionalism, the detachment from events implicit in the Green Leader speech.

On 11 January 2002, the first 'war on terror' detainees were transferred to Guantanamo Bay, shackled, hooded and masked to ensure sensory deprivation. 11 January 2012 marks 10 years since the first detainees were transferred to the US detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. According to the US authorities, 779 detainees have been held in Guantanamo, the vast majority without charge or criminal trial. All but one of the 779 detainees were foreign nationals. One detainee discovered to have US citizenship (as well as Saudi Arabian) was immediately transferred out of the base in 2002. After holding him in military custody in the USA for over two years, the government transferred him to Saudi Arabia under a deal in which among other things, the detainee renounced his US citizenship. In 2002, 632 detainees were transferred to Guantanamo; the totals in the following years were: 2003 - 117; 2004 - 10; 2005 - 0; 2006 - 14; 2007 - 5; 2008 - 1. The last detainee transferred to the base had been held in CIA custody at an undisclosed location before transfer to military custody in March 2008. In 2011 two detainees died both Afghan nationals. One detainee was transferred out of Guantanamo during 2011 (by December).. 171 men from more than 20 countries were still held at Guantanamo in early December 2011, four of whom were serving sentences after being convicted by military commission. 48 detainees could neither be released nor tried, but should be held in indefinite detention according to the Obama administration. 90 of those still held at Guanánamo are Yemenis, including one serving a life sentence after being convicted by military commission. President Obama imposed a moratorium on detainee transfers to Yemen in January 2010. One Yemeni detainee has been released since then. Since 2002, six detainees have been convicted by military commission, four of whom pleaded guilty under plea trial arrangements, two of whom have been repatriated. Since 2002, eight detainees have died at the base, six by reported suicide, two as a result of natural causes. The USA intends to pursue the death penalty against six detainees who have been charged for trial by military commission. All six were subjected to enforced disappearance in secret CIA custody prior to being brought to Guantanamo. All six were subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, held incommunicado in solitary confinement for up to four years. Two were subjected to waterboarding. Precisely what interrogation techniques and conditions of confinement detainees were subjected to in CIA custody remains classified at the highest level of secrecy One Guantanamo detainee has been brought to the USA for trial in federal court. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2011. No detainee has been released into the USA. More than 600 detainees have been transferred from Guantanamo to other countries since 2002, including Albania, Afghanistan, Algeria, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, USA and Yemen. It took six-and-a-half years of detentions at Guantanamo before the US Supreme Court ruled that the detainees had the right to challenge the lawfulness of their detention in US federal court. By the time that ruling, Boumediene v. Bush, was handed down in June 2008, over 500 detainees had been transferred out of the base. Between June 2008 and late November 2011, there were 47 rulings by the District Court on the merits of habeas corpus petitions. In 22 cases, concerning 38 individuals (including 17 Uighurs) the judge ruled the detention unlawful. In 25 cases, the court ruled the detention lawful under the USA's global 'war' framework. On appeal, the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit has issued 16 decisions - ruling against the detainee in 12 cases and remanding to the District Court for further proceedings in four cases. At least 12 of those held at Guantanamo were under 18 years old when taken into custody. One Canadian national taken into US military custody in 2002 at the age of 15, remains in Guantanamo where he has spent more than a third of his life. Detainees have been taken into custody in at least 10 countries - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Azerbaijan, Zambia, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Djibouti, and Afghanistan - before eventually being transferred to Guantanamo. In September 2011, 2,100 people were being held in US custody in the US Detention Facility in Parwan (DFIP) on the Bagram air base in Afghanistan.
