A monitoring group says Islamic State militants have killed 20 men at the ancient theatre inside the Unesco World Heritage site of Palmyra in central Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says residents were rounded up and forced to watch the men being shot.
The group says about 240 people - mostly soldiers - have now been killed by IS since it overran the town last week.
The killings come as there are fears that IS may destroy the 2,000-year-old Roman-era ruins.
Syrian officials said last week IS militants locked the doors to the museum at the site and placed guards at its doors.

The Russian military said on Thursday (April 21) it had completed the demining of the ancient part of the Syrian city of Palmyra, recaptured by Syrian and Russian forces in late March from militants.
"Comrade commander-in-chief! As of today, the task of demining the architectural and historical part of Palmyra has been fully completed," Russian engineer troops commander Yuri Stavitski told President Vladimir Putin via video link from Palmyra.

ISIL fighters have destroyed two Islamic shrines close to the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra or Tadmur, as it's also known.
It's the first time they've targeted historical sites since they took over the city, but experts fear there's more destruction to come.

"Palmyra was under control of the co-called Islamic State for almost a year. During that time, its architectural heritage was partially destroyed. Palmyra
Palmyra (/ˌpælˈmaɪrə/; Aramaic: ܬܕܡܘܪܬܐ Tedmurtā ; Arabic: تدمر Tadmor) is an ancient Semitic city in present-day Homs Governorate, Syria. Archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic period and the city was first documented in the early second millennium BC. Palmyra changed hands on a number of occasions between different empires, before becoming a subject of the Roman Empire in the first century AD.
The city grew wealthy from trade caravans; the Palmyrenes, renowned merchants, established colonies along the Silk Road and operated throughout the Roman Empire. Palmyra's wealth enabled the construction of monumental projects, such as the Great Colonnade, the Temple of Bel and the distinctive tower tombs. The Palmyrenes were a mix of Amorites, Arameans and Arabs. The city's social structure was tribal, and its inhabitants spoke Palmyrene (a dialect of Aramaic); Greek was used for commercial and diplomatic purposes. The culture of Palmyra, influenced by Greco-Roman culture, produced distinctive art and architecture that combined eastern and western traditions. The city's inhabitants worshiped local deities and Mesopotamian and Arab gods.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says residents were rounded up and forced to watch the men being shot.
The group says about 240 people - mostly soldiers - have now been killed by IS since it overran the town last week.
The killings come as there are fears that IS may destroy the 2,000-year-old Roman-era ruins.
Syrian officials said last week IS militants locked the doors to the museum at the site and placed guards at its doors.

Das antike Palmyra gehört zu den bedeutesten Ausgrabungsstätten Syriens und steht auf der Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes. Die Siedlung, Tempel und Gräber decken weitläufiges Areal ab. Wir hatten bei unserer Reise mit Eberhardt TRAVEL einen Tag Zeit, ein paar Eindrücke zu gewinnen. Wir schlenderten über die Kolonadenstraße, sahen das Theater, besuchten einen Grabturm und ein unterirdisches Grab. Besonders beeindruckend war der Tempel des Baal. Zum Abschluss hatten wir einen wunderbaren Blick von der Burg, die mit rund 700 Jahren in dieser Gegend eher ein junges Gebäude ist. Palmyra war übrigens eine Oasenstadt, die aus mehrere Quellen gespeist wurde. Leider ist inzwischen auch die letzte Quelle versiegt. Das Grün zieht sich langsam zurück. Palmyra tadmur Syria
First time entering this City, my wife thinking about Movie Wax House.. so spooky. no body around and we are really happy when first time saw a group of tourist. finally a break ahhhhhh.. even to find petrol station I have to go to the corner of city...but very small petrol station...and spooky also. Palmyra or Tadmur in arabic. I found is more interesting than Jerash in Jordan. huge complex of Roman city and building stand still. no entrance fee to the site. just move your vehicle all around the site freely only some guide and sales man going around try to get some money from you. hope you enjoy some photo from just 3 hour of our journey visiting this city before we head toward allepo to turkey Background music is "Kota Mati" meaning dead city from peterpan, indonesia...

Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

Das antike Palmyra gehört zu den bedeutesten Ausgrabungsstätten Syriens und steht auf der Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes. Die Siedlung, Tempel und Gräber decken weitläufiges Areal ab. Wir hatten bei unserer Reise mit Eberhardt TRAVEL einen Tag Zeit, ein paar Eindrücke zu gewinnen. Wir schlenderten über die Kolonadenstraße, sahen das Theater, besuchten einen Grabturm und ein unterirdisches Grab. Besonders beeindruckend war der Tempel des Baal. Zum Abschluss hatten wir einen wunderbaren Blick von der Burg, die mit rund 700 Jahren in dieser Gegend eher ein junges Gebäude ist. Palmyra war übrigens eine Oasenstadt, die aus mehrere Quellen gespeist wurde. Leider ist inzwischen auch die letzte Quelle versiegt. Das Grün zieht sich langsam zurück. First time entering this City, my wife thinking about Movie Wax House..
so spooky. no body around and we are really happy when first time saw a group of tourist. finally a break ahhhhhh..
even to find petrol station I have to go to the corner of city...but very small petrol station...and spooky also.
Palmyra or Tadmur in arabic. I found is more interesting than Jerash in Jordan.
huge complex of Roman city and building stand still.
no entrance fee to the site. just move your vehicle all around the site freely
only some guide and sales man going around try to get some money from you.
hope you enjoy some photo from just 3 hour of our journey visiting this city before we head toward allepo to turkey
