Solo for Bovine Rhodopsin

I use a model of the active form of rhodopsin as a virtual instrument. The sounds are to be spacialized between a cube of eight speakers shown in dark gray. In this posting I include only the front top left and right channels. Both sound and video were created with Pure Data. The protein's sequence is a scale: higher pitches at the amino end, lower pitches at the carboxy end. Pulsing patterns describe the chemical structures of the amino acids. The receptor starts in the inactive (dark) conformation (red) and when it absorbs a photon of light it moves into the activated state (orange). Upon receptor activation, the C-terminal α5 helix of Gαi (yellow, blue) binds to R*. The helical domain (green) opens away from Gαi-GTPase domain (grey) and GDP is released (spheres).
