Diego Alves Carreira (born 24 June 1985), known as Diego Alves, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Valencia CF as a goalkeeper.
Having begun his career at Atlético Mineiro, he spent most of his career in Spain in the service of Almería and Valencia, making over 200 La Liga appearances for both teams.
Alves was part of the Brazilian squad which won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics, and made his senior international debut in 2011.
Alves was born in Rio de Janeiro. Having started professionally at Clube Atlético Mineiro, he moved to UD Almería on 24 July 2007, as the Andalusians had just achieved a first ever promotion to La Liga. Initially the backup to another newly signed, David Cobeño, he eventually became the undisputed starter, helping the club overachieve for a final eighth place in the league with notable performances against, among others, Real Madrid.
After Cobeño left for Rayo Vallecano in August 2008, Alves remained first-choice during 2008–09, but suffered an injury in the final stretch of the season. Fully recovered for the start of the following campaign he played in all the matches and minutes (safe for 30 minutes against Valencia CF, after he had been sent off, and the last round against Sevilla FC, as Almería was already saved from relegation); even before the campaign had ended, speculation was ripe regarding his future.
David Villa Sánchez (Spanish pronunciation: [daˈβið ˈβiʎa]; born 3 December 1981) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a striker and also serves as captain for New York City FC in Major League Soccer. He is nicknamed El Guaje (The Kid in Asturian) because as a youngster he frequently played football with children much older than him.
Despite sustaining a serious injury as a child, Villa started his professional career with Sporting de Gijón. He moved to Real Zaragoza after two seasons, where he made his La Liga début, winning the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. He joined Valencia CF in 2005 for a transfer fee of €12 million and was part of the Valencia team that won the Copa del Rey in the 2007–08 season. Villa hit his La Liga goal scoring peak whilst at Valencia, scoring 28 league goals in the 2008–09 season. In 2010 he moved to FC Barcelona for €40 million where he won his first La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles. He was one of the goal scorers in the 2011 final of the Champions League as Barcelona defeated Manchester United by 3–1. After a €5.1 million transfer, he spent the 2013–14 season at Atlético Madrid, winning another La Liga title before leaving for New York City.
