1979 (MCMLXXIX) was a common year starting on Monday (dominical letter G) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1979th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 979th year of the 2nd millennium, the 79th year of the 20th century, and the 10th and last year of the 1970s decade.
Password Plus and Super Password are American TV game shows that aired separately between 1979 and 1989. While elements of the original game show format Password were modified for these two programs, both Password Plus and Super Password had the same general format with only subtle differences between the two.
Password Plus and Super Password aired on NBC, and were taped on Stage 3 at NBC Studios in Burbank, California. Password Plus was a Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Production and Super Password was a Mark Goodson Production.
Password Plus aired from January 8, 1979 to March 26, 1982, for 801 episodes (one of which was left unaired until airing on GSN as a rerun in the mid-1990s). The program also won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show in 1982. Super Password aired 1,151 episodes from September 24, 1984 to March 24, 1989.
Password Plus was hosted by Allen Ludden from January 1979 to April 1980, when he had to take a leave of absence from the show due to health problems. Bill Cullen substituted for Ludden during his first absence. Ludden returned in May, but he left the program in late October due to further health problems; he did not appear on television again before his 1981 death. Because Cullen had recently begun hosting Blockbusters, also a Goodson-Todman production airing on NBC, Tom Kennedy took over hosting and remained host until Password Plus ended.Bert Convy was selected as the host for Super Password's entire run.
Big Matches are annual cricket matches played between different schools in Sri Lanka. The same schools have played one another for many years, some for over a century, and Big Matches form an important part of modern Sri Lankan culture with both school children and adults taking part in much of the activity that is part of the annual matches.
Most big matches are played over two days. Three big matches – Royal–Thomian, St. Thomas-St. Servatius and Central-St. John – are played over three days.
The Big Match is a British Association football television programme, which screened on ITV regularly between 1968 and 1992 (the last four years, the programme went under the title The Match).
The Big Match originally launched on London Weekend Television, the ITV regional station that served London and the Home Counties at weekends, screening highlights of Football League matches. Other ITV regions had their own shows, but would show The Big Match if they were not covering their own match – particularly often in the case of Southern and HTV. The programme was set up in part as a response to the increased demand in televised football following the 1966 FIFA World Cup and partly as an alternative to the BBC's own football programme, Match of the Day. The Big Match launched the media career of Jimmy Hill, who appeared on the programme as an analyst, and made Brian Moore one of the country's leading football commentators.
The Big Match originally screened match highlights on Sunday afternoons (while Match of the Day screened them on Saturday evenings), but in 1978 Michael Grade at London Weekend Television audaciously won exclusive rights to all league football coverage for ITV, in a move termed "Snatch of the Day". Although the Office of Fair Trading blocked the move, the BBC were forced to allow ITV to take over the Saturday night slot in alternating seasons. This new arrangement began with the 1980-81 season.
Historical purposes only. Jim Laurie Report from Hanoi in March 1979 in the aftermath of the war between China and Vietnam. Chinese forces began their offensive against Vietnam on February 17, 1979. On March 5th, China declared mission accomplished and began withdrawing. Most analysts concluded that Vietnam had actually given China a 'bloody nose.' The hardened Vietnamese troops using ambush tactics killed an estimated 3000 Chinese troops in a matter of days. In China, the war is largely forgotten. It resulted in calls from Chinese military commanders for modernization. In Vietnam the brief conflict was referred to as Chiến tranh chống bành trướng Trung Hoa (The War against Chinese Expansionism). In China it was termed 对越自卫反击战 (The Defensive Counter-Attack Against Vietnam.) ...

ITV Schools junction from the Spring Term 1979. This slide was used week commencing Monday 12th March 1979. Looking at the listings in that year's Annual Programme Booklet, Looking at Television was shown Tuesdays and Fridays, and preceded on Tuesdays by Watch Your Language, and on Fridays by Experiment. This certainly isn't Experiment (wrong production company for starters), so - despite the fact I'm struggling to find a link between the footage and the nature of Watch Your Language - this must be Tuesday 13th March, from approx 10.14am to 10.19am. I have also checked the TV Times listings for the week prior to this (I do not have access to the listings for the week in question) and this reflects the Annual Programme Booklet. Neither programme here appears to be a regional varia...
