My GREATEST Secret || How to read Cuneiform
Hi. I'm Charlie Engelman. SUBSCRIBE! I'll take my hat off at 10,000 subs! Say hello in the comments for a shoutout!!
In this video, we learn how to read and write using cuneiform. Cuneiform is an ancient syllabic script. In this type of written language, symbols represent sounds. I made an ancient tablet, bearing a secret message in cuneiform. It's entirely made out of clay, with impressions made using a stylus. Can you decipher the hidden cuneiform code and follow its instructions?

To follow on with the ancient writing theme, this #TeaDay reel looks at a short intro to Cuneiform Tablets.

One of the things that people get most focused about with Cuneiform is that they think it's a language, but actually it's just a writing script. So just like the Roman alphabet is used to write multiple European languages today, so would Cuneiform have been used to write multiple ancient languages. Some, such as Sumerian, have yet to be translated, but the symbols themselves can be deciphered. The official "declaration of decipherment" happened in 1857, when four independently working scholars were given the same script and arrived at roughly the same result. Cuneiform Writing Was Not Written with Nail #shorts #shortvideo
Although cuneiform is considered to be an ancient writing system used in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures, it was actually written not with nails, but with a wide-pointed tool (basalt, marble, etc.). nails were used only to prevent tablets or stones from breaking.

Irving Finkel is the curator in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia at the British Museum, of which the Middle East Department has the largest collection of any modern museum. This work involves reading and translating all sorts of inscriptions, sometimes working on ancient archives to identify manuscripts that belong together, or even join to one another. He is the author of The Ark Before Noah: Decoding the Story of the Flood.

The official "declaration of decipherment" happened in 1857, when four independently working scholars were given the same script and arrived at roughly the same result. Since then, we've unearthed many more cuneiform tablets - generally when excavating buildings, as when they were no longer needed, they were often used as filler material when constructing new buildings - and so our knowledge of the different symbols has also expanded.
.
What I find interesting is that the earliest written "words" weren't used to inscribe poetry or epic tales - that came much later - but were basically just a means of documenting admin. All the earliest Cuneiform tablets are some form of invoice or wage notice, which seems very unromantic but actually if you think about it, that means that all of the beautiful poetry and epic adventures were being relayed verbally. Prehistory was not a silent place, and stories have probably been around since the very dawn of humanity. Even when writing first appeared, the stories weren't pinned down, but likely developed and evolved with every retelling. Perhaps it's overly intangible, but I find it a really beautiful thought.
.
When you consume stories, do you prefer to hear them spoken aloud, watch them unfold in images (moving or still), or read them through script on the page? I personally love audiobooks, and I've also started using my dictation software more and more to write too, so for me the spoken word is still favourite.
