Flight lieutenant (Flt Lt in the RAF and IAF; FLTLT in the RAAF and RNZAF; formerly sometimes F/L in all services) is a junior commissioned air force rank which originated in the Royal Naval Air Service and continues to be used in the Royal Air Force and many other countries, especially in the Commonwealth. It is also sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in non-English-speaking countries, especially those which have an air force-specific rank structure.
Flight lieutenant ranks above flying officer and below squadron leader. The name of the rank is the complete phrase; it is never shortened to "lieutenant".
It has a NATO ranking code of OF-2, and is equivalent to a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and a captain in the British Army and the Royal Marines. The equivalent rank in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) (until 1968) and Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service (PMRAFNS) (until 1980) was flight officer.
Flight Lieutenant Ian Fortune, 28, went in to pick up casualties as a fierce firefight raged between US forces and rebels near Garmsir, Afghanistan, earlier this year. The casualties were loaded. Then as he lifted off, Ian was shot. The round then penetrated his helmet hitting him between the eyes. It knocked his head back and caused severe bleeding. More bullets followed, hitting the Chinook's controls. But with blood pouring into his eyes, Ian battled with the 'copter to fly the eight minutes to Camp Bastion. The pilot, from the RAF's 27 Squadron, received the Distinguished Flying Cross for "an act of valour, courage whilst flying in active operations". Flt Lt Fortune, of Kingston, Surrey, said to his crew: "Chaps, I think I've been hit - but I'm OK."

Iconic military aircraft old and new in the air.. Filmed at Shoreham and Eastbourne Airshows. With the voice of Flt Lt A.R. Dearden DFC DFM during one Lancaster clip. Apologises for some of the background sound noises from time to time - filming at air-shows means you don't always get to choose your nearest neighbours.... The quality seems to have suffered on the transfer to You tube a little - it wasn't that good to start with!
